babysitter rates for a "moms" night with moms onsite

[deleted account] ( 5 moms have responded )

We had a great "moms" night last night with the kids upstairs with a babysitter and moms downstairs. There were 8 kids- all girls ages 6-10 who watched a movie and played a scavenger hunt. The babysitters main job was to just keep them happy and upstairs which she did fairly successfully. I brought them popcorn, dessert and drinks. So- how much should I give her for this 3 hour event? Any thoughts?

Our babysitter gets $10 an hour... same from each family if there's more than just our kids there. Doesn't matter if we're nearby or not, they are still her responsibility to watch and take care of. Doesn't mean it's any easier for them. =) Ours knows to only contact us in an emergency, everything else is left up to her. We also let her have free reign of the house though. Meaning, the snacks and drinks are there regardless and she can help herself and knows what the kids can and can't have.

If she did really well and you want her to return, pay good! I'd say $30 at the minimun!

This really depends on where you live and how old the babysitter is. In Sacramento, I'd say the going rate is $12/hour for a babysitter who is old enough to drive herself. Definitely less for younger babysitter. In my opinion, I don't pay less if I'm home because I actually think that it's way more uncomfortable and un-fun to babysit with moms onsite. Also, I don't pay less when it's easy because I figure either way I am keeping the babysitter away from whatever it is she'd rather be doing. I do, however, pay more if there are more children. Hope this helps.

I'd say $20-$30 would be fair, after all you were all there, but there were 8 kids.
