Hello Everyone!

My son was diagnosed with Balanitis yesterday morning when I rushed him to the ER due to his penis being inflamed, the skin had grown over (he is circumsized) and there was a white discharge. The doc. gave me some creme to put on the sore area... but that was it... They didn't help me or show me how to clean off the 'gunk' and sent me home guessing... My husband and I put him in the tub to play for a while, then tried to clean out the folds of skin that had collected the 'yeast'. He later started bleeding from where the skin was forcefully retracted due to cleaning the infection..

I now feel horrible and dont' know what to do from here... I come from a family with a long history of daugthers, so no one has any real advice there... and my husband's mother was able to help us some... but anyone else have any advice?

He SCREEEEEEAMS when I try and touch it to clean it, or to apply any creme...

I feel absolutely horrible for letting this happen. The guilt for me may be worse than the pain for him, but i doubt it.

Any advice is great!

Thanks everyone! The creme seems to be helping a lot. We let him crawl around a bit without the diaper, per the ER's suggestion. It's not as inflamed and the redness is going away. He's still not happy when we mess with it to clean/apply creme.. but we have to!

Thank you all for the feedback! really helpful! I'll keep this all in mind incase it happens again or doesn't get better.

Of course, check with your pediatrician but this is what worked for me....

Two of my children have had problems with yeast infections on their skin. My infant daughter had it in the folds of her neck and washing made it worse (it looked so red it was as if someone had tried to strangle her and she cringed at being touched there), as did steroid creams. I was finally able to get rid of it by rinsing it with a solution of grapefruit extract (can be found at health food stores) and water, 4 oz. water to six drops extract. I didn't wipe it dry but blew it dry with a hair dryer. Then I sprinkled nystatin powder over it (this is a powder that acts against yeast that we got from our pediatrician). With in 24 hours the inflamation began to recede. I continued using that combo for a week until all redness was gone. I continue to have to use it periodically because those neck folds are hidden from the light of day. I'm also giving her probiotics to get good flora growing in her body. Good luck!

I agree with the pp I would take him to your pediatrician for a follow up.There might be a better cream they can suggest for it? Did they tell you to give him any baby tylenol to help with the pain?
good luck = ]

First, I would schedule an appt with his regular pediatrician to follow-up after the ER visit.

Secondly, kids are gonna scream regardless whenever something is uncomfortable. My daughter (sorry, i don't have any little boys!) used to get re-occuring yeast infections in her skin to the point that your son is: cracked, inflamed skin, white crusty's, etc. Our pediatrician suggested lukewarm sitz baths, utilizing a soft lukewarm baby washcloth when changing her, and applying the anti-fungal ointment he prescribed. Yes, she screamed everytime we took her diaper off for the first 3 days... but you need to be persistant, calm and keep up with the treatment. They figure out pretty quick that putting on the "magic stuff" (our code name for her medicine) actually makes it feel better.

When you meet with your pediatrician, talk to them about how to prevent this in the future from happening. We ended up having to utilize a product like Aquafor/Bag Balm/A&D ointment at every changing to keep a barrier between her skin and her diaper. Good luck!
