So I am 30.5 weeks pregnant with my first baby and my doctor has informed me that my baby is weighing/sizing in about 4 weeks ahead of schedule! So she's got very long limbs and weighs about 4-5 lbs already! I've been told I need to cut out all sugar from my daily menu and cut back carbs as much as possible! I don't know what I'm going to eat! I love rice, and I have been eating brown rice so i figured that was better than nothing, but now I can't even eat that really. I need some suggestions on meal ideas!

Also is it possible that I could end up going into preterm labour because the baby is so big? Do you think they screwed up on the due date and I'm due a couple weeks earlier than expected or does this happen to a lot of people?

edit: and yes everyone I did get the diabetes screening test and passed it with flying colors! :D

Tyrae I'm 66 had 5 children and beleive me when I say that the due date can be off most of the time. I come from an erea were there wasn't all these machines and I think it was just easier not haveing a docter that said don't eat this don' do that. My children were 8 and 9 pound children and I was 100 pounds had good deliveries and healthy babies. As long as you feel strong and healthy just use good judgement

Both my babies were big early on and both were born at 37 instead of 40 weeks. I did experience preterm labor with my first, but she wound up being my smaller baby at 6 lb. 12 oz. My 9 pounder just decided to come early with no warning...and they were both perfectly healthy! By the way, none of the docs in the practice I went to advised me to alter my diet.

I would at least cut out your sugars. I am pregnant with our 5th, and while pregnant with my 3rd I ate cake and soda galore! the last 8 weeks of my pregnancy i spilled sugar in my urine, LARGE amounts of sugar. My midwife kept telling me to cut out the sugary foods because it was spilling in my urine (NO gestational diabetes, i was just eating that much sugar! it spills over in about 30% of pregnant women because it spills at a lower point than nonpregnant women). I did not listen to her and my son was 9 pounds when he was born, and had shoulder dystocia (shoulder stuck under my pubic bone, my midwife had to put her hands up in me to grab his shoulder and rotate it to get him out.) Now, that is big because my others were 6'13", 5'13", and 8 pounds, the 8 pounder being born at over 41 weeks. I would not cut everything out personally, but eat SMART. healthy. pregnancy doesnt=eating what you want when you want, so many people think!

Some people just have big babies. I'm on my second baby, 29 weeks, and he's measuring ~3.6lbs. I have also passed my glucose screening. We are both perfectly healthy. My first was 10lbs 4oz. standard vaginal delivery and no diabetes. Make sure you know your medical history. How big were you, your husband, your parents, etc?

I too passed the GD test with flying colors and had a huge baby (9lbs 7 oz) who had extremely low blood sugar. It was a miracle we didn't lose her! But that was not her only problem! They changed my due date halfway through because she was measuring small. So she was really born 3 weeks past her due date. That in itself tells you they don't know for sure how big baby really is. Just before she was born the doctor said she will be around 6-7 lbs (he was off by almost 3 lbs!) It's never a bad idea to eat a very healthy diet and try to follow your dr.'s orders. If it is difficult for you to find things you can eat, let him know. Pregnancy is a crappy time to go on a diet, but your baby's health and your health are the priorities here. Good luck!

I was told I was going to have an 8 lb baby and he was 10lbs 13oz. However, a friend of mine was told her son would be over 9lbs, and he was 6lbs 12oz. So I just don't trust their methods anymore lol.

My first was born at 41+ weeks after induction he was 9lb 8oz. My second was measured to be 37 weeks in size when I was 30 weeks pregnant I was induced at 38 weeks and was 8lb 11oz. For that pregnancy I kept nothing down and was able to eat very little due to bad heartburn but they predicted 10lbs+ at full term so I don't really know if what you eat will have any effect!

I am a mother of seven and am really gladd all were born early! My second one they thought was going to be 11-12 lbs but was born a month early. He was 9.1 lbs. and 21 in. The had to take him immediately and put him in the premie section of the nursery on oxygen and an incubator. It was actually funny seeing him, the largest baby in the nursery and the only one in the premie section. He just turned 12 and is almost 5'10". He is expected to be between 6'7" and 6'8". I had one who was 16 days early and was 10.2 lbs and 21".

In case you do have gestational diabetes...I had it with all of mine, except maybe my oldest. However, I was able to control my sugars through my diet. For those who say you may still have carbs, that depends on you! In each pregnancy, I had to eliminate carbs almost completely (only trace carbs through veggies) in order to keep my sugars under control, but it worked! Do what you have to do to stay healthy. Listen to your body and your doctor/dietician. If you are concerned, ask your doctor for a glucose tolerance test. Most tests are done around 28 weeks but with one of mine it didn't show up until after the 34th week. Then he was born 3 weeks later. =o)

I would recommend that you talk to your doctor and find out ALL of his reasoning behind what he is having you do. Also are you for positive when your due date is? You can have a period the first month after you are pregnant, although it is usually lighter. I would not discount what the dr. says, but ask lots of questions and of course get exercise and eat healthy. Don't buy what you can't eat, it makes it a lot easier. If he is not letting you do your job then I would find out why, as there may be more going on. I had two kids at 8' 13" and one at 9' 1" and one at 9' 6". One of my daughters just had a 10lb baby and that was taken a week early. Please don't discount what you are told from doctors, although they could be wrong about the weight.

You know what they told me I had a king size baby and that I'd better cut back on everything...around 36 weeks they told me that I would have a 10 pound baby at least...Every time I went into the doctor's office she kept scaring me with ridiculous comments. It turns out I had an unusually long limbed baby who was having some difficulty being all squished inside me. She was about 2 inches longer than the average baby and she is now almost 6 feet tall at nineteen. Even though she was my first child she was ready to come out 3 weeks early, my water broke at 37 weeks and that night I had my little girl. She was only 8 lbs 9oz and perfectly healthy. The only trouble was that my doctor was so impatient to get her out that they used medium sized forceps only half an hour into the delivery to get her out and did nerve damage to her right arm which is still a problem for her. Don't worry and if it is possible I suggest you seek out a midwife or doula to be a reassuring sounding board for your medical concerns. Something that I recommend to every woman having a baby is to read Spiritual Midwifery by Ina May Gaskin. If you look at all the comments above it is quite clear that they cannot tell the weight of the baby from an ultrasound. Ofcourse take care of your health and heed the doctor's concern I am not telling you to be wreckless but I always found other women that had children had all kinds of interesting anecdotes and stories that helped me along the way. I had a good friend you weighed about 100 lbs and she had 2 ten lbs babies!!!!!!!!! She was never told to cut back, be careful what she ate, etc.and her delivery of those babies were vaginal and took 3 hours. If she were at the same hospital as mine she would have been told she had to do a Csection. In contrast my daughter's birth was half an hour and the doctor used forceps before there were any signs of distress for the baby. Please be aware that it depends on the doctor, the philosophy of the hospital that you are having the child in, etc. Another excellent book is OPEN SEASON: A Survival Guide for Natural Childbirth and VBAC* in the 90's by Nancy Wainer Cohen. You're doing the right thing asking other Moms, get all the info you can and trust yourself and how you feel. There are many different ways of looking at childbirth you just have to be as well informed as you can be.

The measurements of the ultrasounds are usually off, it is so hard to tell exactly how big your child will be until he or she will actually be born. With my first pregnancy of b/g twins, I had my last ultrasound for them the day before they were born ( they were born six weeks early in June 2008) They were predicted to be almost two pounds bigger than what they actually were. They said my daughter was going to be around 5 pounds and my son around 5 or 6 pounds. At 33 weeks 6 days, my daughter was three pounds twelve ounces at birth 17 inches long, and my son was four pounds 10 ounces at birth 18 inches long.

With my second pregnancy I was measuring a few weeks ahead, and all the other things you could think of as well. I ended up having my son at 38 weeks 6 days on July 12th of this year he was born at six pounds 1 ounce and nineteen and a half inches tall.

It's not an exact science, telling how heavy a baby is, so don't worry. One of my daughters was 9.9lbs and the other 8.5 when they were born and it's certainly doable :) Big babies don't necessarily mean preterm birth.

With both of my pregnancies I got a reguler period for the first few months. With my son I was on the pill and did not know I was pregnant. The doctors origianlly went by my period but changed the due date after the first ultra sound because it was obvious I was further along. At the end my son flipped over into breech position so I needed to be scheduled for a c-section. They also said the baby was between 9-10lbs. At that point I was rotating Dr.'s within the office and the Dr. I saw that day did not want to schedule me because she kept saying it's too soon before your due date. When I tried to explain to her we were not exactly sure she said "we never change your due date". He was 9lb 3oz at birth and 23" long so he had no fat on him. Do you know your date of conception? If not it may be possible that you are further along, not that you shouldn't listen to your Dr. My original due date was 9/30/05. I gave birth to a very healthy, very large, very developed son on 8/22/05. Anything is possible. Good Luck!

I was also told my 1st baby was 4 weeks ahead, there was no problem at all at birth or from his development. My second baby measured 9 lb in the ultrasound, was born less than 7lbs! This things are very innacurate. Babies do not go to preterm labor because of their size: fact. Enjoy the last weeks! Good luck with labor!

My first was 9lbs 5 oz. I too passed the glucose tolerance test. My doctor didn't realize that it wasn't just me gaining weight. I packed on 40lbs. Before she was born I asked my doc what he thought she would weigh. He guess 7 and a half. PHHHTTT! That was jsut by feel. Did your doctor do a ultra sound? The ultrasounds can be off to a pound plus or minus. My most recent one (she is 8mo) was measuring via ultra sound big for months. I had regular ultras sounds (I did have GD this time). They induced early (almost 2wks) and said she was over 8lbs. She was only 7lbs 9oz. So what I am saying is that it is not a true science in the way they figure out the size. She may be long but be a light weight.

If I were you I would find out what the gestational diabetes diet is and use it even though you passed. It is fairly easy (done it twice now). I wouldn't cut out ALL carbs! Brown rice is a healthy carb. Moderation is the big thing here. Good luck!

And yes, if you are not regular and don't know when you conceived they could be off.

I wouldnt necessarily worry about preterm labour, as my son was 10lbs 2oz when born and 10 days late. I didnt htink he was any more difficult to push out than my daughter who was 8lbs. As some of the other mums have said, just eat healthily and try not to worry too much, as thats not good for you both. I was worried all the way through that he was going to be big, tho looking back I dont know why I stressed about it - he's the bonniest most gorgeous big boy you could meet!! And I do think these healthcare proffessionals like to panic us sometimesas when I was expecting my daughter, my midwife panicked because I suddenly started measuring bigger than my dates towards the end, so sent me off for an ultrasound, and they were a bit, what are you worried about its all normal!! Good luck with everything though, ive not been much use, just wanted to offer my support!!

the doctors arn't always acurate, i've just given birth to my second baby and the doctors were worried about his size, (my first was 9lb 4oz) at 37 weeks i was measuring 44cm so i was sent for an ultrasound, the ultrasound told me at 37 weeks my baby was 9lb 5oz already so here i am expecting a massive baby by c section, and am proud to say my boy was born at 42 weeks, 5 weeks after my ultrasound!! and he weighed a mere 8lb 10oz (hahaha) anyways my point is that although they are usually pretty acurate doctors can sometimes be a bit out with their guesstimates as mine indeed was..... best of luck

I wouldn't worry too much about the size of your baby at this stage, as long as you are both healthy!
As for your sugar cravings maybe you could try the diabetic lollies. I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with my second daughter and I had hardly eaten any sweet and sugary things. I watched my diet all the time, before I had the test done and the results came back. Unlike with my eldest daughter( I ate a Mars Bar a day and gained 20kgs) but never had it.
Babies come in all sizes and no one can accurately predict how big your baby is going to be when he/she arrives. Your baby will come when it is ready and not before (unless your doctor says otherwise).
I don't really have any food ideas, except to eat healthy.
Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

I was reading several of these posts, and I am happy to say, you can live a wonderful, healthy life with a low carb diet. I don't know if you know this or not, but a very fine cardiologist studied carbohydrate processes a while ago and found out that, carbs may taste good, seem to fill you up right away, but in reality, turn to sugar, which triggers your insulin to make more to process the sugar and insulin triggers your body to tell it you are hungry, even when you are not.

That is why things like rice and pasta make you feel full when you are eating, you get a high burst of energy for a while, then you are starving a few hours later.

I am diabetic, my father is a heart patient, and both of us have successfully lived on a low carb diet for many years. To tell you the truth, it isn't as convenient as you would like for low carb to be, but it is very easy to live on a low carb diet plan and be very satisfied in your diet.

Note, the first week of lowering carbs you will crave them like crazy because your body is going through a withdrawal process, but after that, you will hardly know they are missing.

You are listening to an old country cook's granddaughter, who had biscuits or some kind of bread, beans or high carb potato or starch with every meal.

Look, there are a lot of diet plans and meal planning sites that offer wonderful low carb recipes and ideals. Brown or wild rice is better for you than traditional rice, stay away from anything that is white, potatoes, rice, flour, or not high grain.

there is a bread, joshua bread is a low carb bread, that Dr. Oz talks about, it is low in carbs and is much better for you, it can be used for many receipies and sandwiches and such, and is wonderful for your health.

It isn't about the intake of high protein or high carbs that can be a problem, it is mixing them, how your body processes them, that causes your body to not be able to handle the carbohydrates and causes the extra fat storage and baby to grow faster and bigger.

I would be happy to share some of my low carb recipes with you, I will send you some later today. You seem to really care about your child, just know worry and stress are more detrimental in your stage of pregnancy than other things, this is an easy fix and not worth stressing over. Just breathe, research the low carb solutions on the internet, many restaurants are offering low carb solutions as well. It will all be fine.

Babies come when they come, as long as your baby is healthy, above a certain weight and the lungs and organs are developing you are on your way, it can be early like my first one, (two weeks) or three weeks late like my second daughter. In a normal pregnancy, which sounds like you have, it isn't about what you eat, don't eat, or what date your doctor comes up with, it is when that baby decides it is ready. You are going to be fine.

I have three children, and I am 5' 2". My first son was 81b 12oz, had a vontuse delivery with him and he was quite big for me. I had 37 hour labour with him. My second child, my daughter was 8lb 6.5oz and was born within an hour and half. My third child, another boy, was a huge 11lb, had him within 3 hours and only 3 stiches!. I am the only one in the family to have produced such a big baby. I had not diabetes, normal pregnancy with all of them. Each baby is different, just go with your natural flow, and what you feel is right in side of you.

Have you had an ultrasound to confirm the weight? Ultrasounds are very good at predicting when the baby is due. Do large babies run in your family? Has the Doctor rechecked your blood sugar? Doctors are not always right; so don't worry too much. You will have a healthy baby.

It's alway's difficult with your first baby as you don't know what to expect and feel that you must aIway's do what the professionals say.The best thing for you and your baby is to rest and relax...I think that you should eat whatever you feel like and let your body work out what your baby needs. It is a natural process and shoudn't be interfered with. If your baby's a big baby she needs the nutrition and from the sounds of what you like to eat, that sounds very healthy, and your baby is probably loving it! She will get ready for the birth when it's time and your body will adapt to that.Good luck ; )

Tyrae, as a mother of 5 and grandmother of 11, I would suggest you go see a specialist and get a second opinion. Especially if your doctor is a family doctor and not an OB/GYN. If your doctor is and OB/GYN, you might consider one who specializes in high risk pregnancies. I think that would alleviate a lot of your concerns. It certainly couldn't hurt.

My opinion: unless your doc can give a sensible reason to cut out sugar and carbs, then you may want to discuss it further with him or her. I was told when they did my Ultrasound, that they have a margin of error +/- 2 pounds. Ultrasound, especially later term shjould not be used to determine the weight of a baby. They can measure the size of the head or length of a bone, but weight is a guessing game. Don't get stressed out. If you are really concerned, make an appointment with a nutritionist.

I think that the dates could be wrong and she is actually 34.5 weeks, not the 30.5!!
When I had my son (now 16months old) I was told that he was 11 days late. (I had to be induced)) When they weighed him and measured him, the dr realised that he was 11 days early!!
So it could possibly be that she is measuring big because she is actually older than what the dates show, or she could just be a big baby anyway!!

I measured big with my first child. He was born at 38 weeks and weighed 9.4lbs. The ultrasounds were almost dead on for weight and size. I am now pregnant with my second, and I am measuring the same way. At 35 weeks she was measured at 7lbs 12oz in the ultrasound. I know that both of my due dates were dead on. Both my diabetes screens came back well within the normal range. Some people just make big babies. If you personally are gaining the right amount of weight and aren't overdoing it, I don't see why you should need to modify your diet unless there are other issues. My doctor has never told me to change my eating habits. I do have weekly biophysical ultrasounds and non-stress tests to make sure the baby is thriving. Every doctor is different, but I would say don't kill yourself trying to modify your diet. Eat what feels right. More often than not your body will tell you if you aren't doing something right. Heck the only thing I could keep down the first four months of this pregnancy was an Arby's Chicken Cordon Bleu. Not exactly the healthiest food in the world, but it worked for me. Good luck!

My son is all most 9 months old and I had to have a c-section with him. He was 9lb 8 oz and I was past due. I had to have a c-section because they said I wouldn't be able to have him vaginally. If they tell you need to have a c-section for safety I wouldn't hesitate. They aren't that bad I recovered very quickly. I was told right up until the end that my son was only going to be around 7lbs they were way off! I had an ultra sound on my due date and my son was showing 10lb 1oz but they said that is give or take 2lbs well that wasn't even a question for me I wasn't going to try and push a out a 12lb baby and risk his life and mine. You still will get the sensation of having a natural birth because you can feel the baby coming out of your belly and that was good enough for me because my son is healthy.

I was told my baby was small at a predicted 6lbs but when she was born she was 7lb8oz! Also when she was born 2 days after my due date my midwife thought she was actually up to 2 weeks overdue - even though we knew the conception date lol!
If you need to cut down on carbs how about grains such as quinoa which are high in protein? I'm not sure how eating healthy carbs such as brown rice would affect you negatively, perhaps a second opinion from a another doctor is something you should consider getting. All the best for everything!

my babies were bigger than they were "supposed to be" and came early. but that doesn't mean yours will. my body couldn't handle the extra weight. if it comes early, there is a good chance it will be healthy and there is plenty of medical intervention to help premature babies. my daughter was 33 weeks and was 4.5 lbs. she is a healthy happy 2 year old. good luck. if you feel pain, stop and rest. be sure to drink lots, dehydration is mostly why mine came early.

My first pregnancy was in a way like this. I didn't have gestational diabetes, but I ended up having a 9 lbs 8 oz healthly baby girl the day before her due date. Do big babies run in your family? I later found out that my grandmother had a few 9 lb babies. So it could be a genetic thing. I wouldn't worry!

I would be careful about worrying that baby is too big... those u/s can be off by a couple of lbs sometimes.. a friend was told her baby was 9-10lbs and too big so they made her have a c/s.. baby was only 6lbs9oz!! they have low carb/no carb pasta and rice... also try splenda.. i loved it when i was preggo.. u don't have to cut it entirely.. just moderate servings... eat smaller meals more times a day... try fresh veggies over frozen. always have a few ready made healthy snacks.. it'll cut down on spur of the moment bad ones for you.walmart has a great selection of sugar free sweets... i loved them..lol

I actually think its pretty terrible for your doctors to have told you to pretty much go on a diet... clearly diabetes is not an issue so what you're eating will not add up to a big baby!! If the baby is going to be big then its going to be big, there isn't alot you can do about it. The baby is healthy & you are healthy, and really that is all that matters. I've also heard that big babies are easier to give birth too (i had c-sections so can't help there) but my mum was teeny & had five healthy 9lb+ girls all naturally!!! Don't be worried about a c-section either - my two were fine. I was up & back to normal the next day (carefully of course!!) Just be positive! and go with your own instinct.

I was told my son would be 10 lbs or bigger when he was born. They scheduled me for a c-section a few days before my due date. Well...guess what?! My son decided he was coming on his own 2 days before we were scheduled. He was 7 lbs 9 oz. He was not big at all. I have learned from other people that the same thing happened to them. I had an ultrasound every week for the last 6 weeks and every one came back the same. "You are having a huge baby." The tests are not always accurate.

They could have screwed up on your due date. It does happen. I wouldn't stress yourself over this. I was besides myself and worried about it.

Best of luck to you and your little one :)

I don't think thats big personally. I also need to let you know that scans can be a pound out either way. My daughter allegedly weighed 6lbs at 33 weeks but she was 7lbs 8oz at term. Scans are an indication of growth but aren't terribly accurate. It could be that you are a week or two out (which is unlikely if you had an early scan) but nobody knows exactly the day they conceive. I wouldn't worry, singleton size doesn't indicate preterm delivery, and you need a varied healthy diet to get the good nutrition to help your baby develop and for you to flourish through the pregnancy. You need carbs for energy! You'll grow a baby thats perfect for you...don't worry.
