Anyone have any advice on what's the best birth control. I just had my first baby about 5 weeks ago and just wondering what's the best way of not getting pregnant anytime soon!

depends how quickly you want another one. I'd advise against implant and injection if you are planning another in the next couple of years or so. I was on the implant and it took me two years to conceive. After having my son, I went on the mini pill, came off it again and was pregnant (planned I might add) after about 4 months. There will be 21 months between them when the second one is born. Don't believe any nonsense about breastfeeding protecting you against pregnancy, as I know several people that got caught this way!

I have had the Mirana for almost 2 years. Wonderful is all I can say. No more monthly times. A little discomfort at the beginning, but you can't tell it is there. It is good for up to 5 years also!!!!

whatever you do, DO NOT get Depo Provera. I repeat..DO NOT get it. It is the birth control shot. I made that mistake of trying it at my post partum check-up....and I have regretted it every since. It has been 9 months since I got ONLY one shot of it and I a still suffering from side effects. This shot ruined my health completely and for the first couple of months on it when it was strong in my system, it made me seriously insane. I had bad aggression and anger that came out of nowhere, mood swings a hundred times worse than any period could do to you, I was violent all the time, my hair started falling out badly, my gall bladder went bad and I had attacks every day from it almost. I also suffered from sever depression on this drug. Once this druf finally started to weaken in my system..I went back to normal....I still am having problems with my menstrual cycles due to this drug 9 months later though....so I have no idea if I am even able to have more children ever again because of it. I only have the one baby girl that is almost a year old....and I wanted more eventually. So I warn anyone who will listen...DO NOT get Depo Provera!!!!

I just got a Paraguard. It is a non-medicated IUD that lasts up to ten years. Because there is no medicine it is safe for breast feeding. The copper tips deter the sperm from fertilizing the egg. Read up on the side effects and cases where a women shouldnt get one, to see if they apply for you. I love mine! You can't feel it and I decide when I want my next baby (or at least when I want to start trying again). Good Luck!

Quick! Don't put it on the back burner and think it is too soon to become pregnant again. Talk to your doctor.

I have been on the Deopt Shot since my first son was born and went off for to have a second child. Cons to the shot that I know of are that you can gain about 10 pounds and if you are thinking about having more children sometime it can take a while for you to ovulate after you have been off it. When I went off it to have my second son, it took 6 months before I started to have a regular cycle and then another 3 months before I was pregnate. I have read that it can sometimes take longer than that, like years. The pros to being on the shot is that you get it once every 3 months and most women do not get thier period while on it. Also it is safe to use while breast feeding, I actually still have milk and my youngest it 3.5 and I have not breast feed in over 3 years. But I do not have to worry about leaking or anything, my doctor says it is normal.

I use the Paraguard IUD - it is non-hormonal which is a good choice if you are breast-feeding as birth control with hormones can reduce your milk supply. The Paraguard is more effective than any other method and can remain in place up to 12 years. It is placed in the doctors office and can be easily removed. If you plan on having other children in the near future you may want to choose a different option.

I take Tri-Sprintec. It works for me and I get it from Wal-Mart. I think I get a three month supply for under $30.00 too :) Plus, you don't have to use insurance to get it!

Abstain from sex. It is the only fool proof way, unless you get sterilized surgically with a tubal ligation or hysterectomy.

@Nana Wegner: Seeing as the OP is referring to this child as her "first" baby, I think it's safe to assume that she might want more kids. So suggesting that her husband get a vasectomy is not really applicable to their situation (yes, some vasectomies can be reversed, but most cannot, and it's very expensive to do so.) And if they want to wait a few years before getting pregnant again, then abstinence is also completely impractical.
The best thing to do, Jenna, is to go to your doctor. Talk about your health history. Tell her about any habits you have, your family's health history, every possible thing you can think of. Then work with your doctor to find a method of contraception that will work for you.

There are law suits against THE NUVA RING!!!! There is at least one blog with testimonials of women who have been on the Nuva Ring and the difficulties they've undergone. There's at least one death as a result of the Nuva Ring. It can cause BLOOD CLOTS in the lungs, legs, etc. Once again, my granddaughter was in the hospital with clots in her lungs which began in her leg. This is very dangerous!!!.

I am the 75-year young woman who spoke of a vasectomy for the man!! I have read most of the submissions with regards a woman using birth control. ALL of these birth control measures are wrought with great side effects for the woman. YOU don't deserve this!!! Aside from ABSTAINING FROM SEX, the suggestion I made with regards the man doing something (for a change!), i.e., having a vasectomy, there is nothing else. All birth control measures are dangerous for a woman. My granddaughter had a Nuva Ring . . . she wound up in the hospital with blood clots in her lungs, as a result of a clot that started in her leg. Any kind of PILL disrupts what NATURE has gifted you. An IUD? I had one in years ago - very nasty!! I had to have it taken out. It's all AGAINST your natural well-being. Listen to your INNER BEING!!

If you can take the pill religiously, you may be okay with the progestin only pill or the "mini-pill". I did NOT take the "mini-pill" religiously. I missed a day or two in 3 months and didn't take it at the same time of day. That contributed to an unplanned pregnancy and miscarriage. So DON'T make the same mistake I did. It feels awful to find out for the first time you're pregnant when you miscarry at about 7 weeks.
So do your research carefully and keep your own habits & personality mind. Then make the choice that is best for you. Good Luck!

I didn't see many people talk about the depoprevera shot. I was bad at remembering the pill which is why we know have our amazing 8 month old Trevor. I wouldn't trade him for the world of course. But this time around I decided to get the shot. Once every 3 months and no periods! I have not had any crazy side effects either. It may take a few months after you stop getting the shot to get your period back but if you know when you want to get pregnant again, then just plan ahead. And I haven't heard any scary stories associated with the shot like there are with the implants. Ultimately you should always discuss what's right for you with your doc. The shot has worked great for me!!

I had the mirena (iud) put in and i love it. I had it before i had my daughter as well and i had it put back in after she was born. It's great because you don't have to worry about taking a pill or changing a ring or getting a shot. it lasts for 5 years and you can get pregnant right after taking it out. no waiting period like with the pill or waiting for the birth control hormones to leave your system.
i love it. and it great not having to think about it either because you have so much going on right now for you especially with your baby being only 5 weeks old.
talk to your doctor about it at your 6 week check up. I love mine!

We women always seem to be the ones who have to make this decision - and it's usually the case that we have to take a pill, have an IUD inserted, etc. I think it's about time the man took responsibility and TEMPORARILY had a vasectomy. Last thing I heard, this procedure can be reversed. Take care of YOURSELF!!!!

I have had a Mirena for nearly 5 years. It is the best choice for me as I have a sensitivity to hormones. The implant I had sent me crazy and oral contraceptives gie me side effects also. I have not had any side effects from the mirena apart from lack of periods!. Talk to your doctor. What is best for someone else may not be the best thing for you.

I have the Paragard IUD, no hormones (great if u are breastfeeding) and it is good for 10 years. If you want another baby, you can get pregnant right away because you do not have to wait for the hormones to get out of your body:)

For those discussing mirena and it's effects... those effects vary from person to person. I know 5 people who have it and none of them have had any of the effects, such as weight gain, mood swings, or depression.

If you are looking for a pill, Micronor, a progesterone only pill, is your best bet, if you are nursing. However, in some women, such as myself, it will affect your supply, so it is not necessarily your best choice.
Otherwise, and IUD would be the next best bet if you are not big on condoms.

well let's see, i tried the ring, didn't like it. i had the mirena, LOVED not having to take pills or change the ring. but my period was sporadic at best. then a couple months later, my body rejected the whole darn thing. i bled for two weeks with monster clots, and the docs did ultrasound and catscans and couldn't find it. now i'm back to the good old pill. just set your alarm on your phone to go off every day if you can't remember!

I have tried condoms, the patch, the depo shot, and the IUD. I think the IUD is the best because you don't have to worry about it after they put it in! No monthly removal and replacements, no appointments every three months, and you don't have to worry about stopping to put a condom on ;)

Well don't have sex thats one way. But if you must ask your doctor about the 5 to 10 yr. birth control they put it in your uterus or whatever and you don't have to worry about it. No side affects etc.. if you decide you want another baby the doctor takes it right out.

It depends on when you want to have your next baby. My boy is now 16 months and we are trying for baby nr. 2. We wanted a small gap between our children and therefore the doctor recommended the pill I was on before our first baby as it will go out of my system within a month of stopping to use it. Some stuff take longer to get our of your system and get your periods going in a cycle again in order for you to plan the next pregnancy. I also know about friends with bad experiences with the Mirena.

I would suggest you research before getting the Mirena. There's a page on FB called Mirena is evil where women like me have had the same problems. Yes, I agree it is convenient but is it worth all the symptoms? Not at all.

Like Tammy said, doctors recommend abstaining until after 6 weeks postpartum. I personally had no desire for sex until after that time, but every person is different. The healthiest and safest way to avoid getting pregnant other than complete abstinance is natural family planning. Basically you look for your body's fertility signs. If you are breast feeding, you probably won't be seeing a period for a while which could mean you're not fertile. However if you start to feel wetness in you underwear or see white, clear, stretchy, or creamy discharge, this is your body telling you that your fertility may be returning. Abstain during this time, it may be long (couple weeks). If you are not breast feeding and your periods have returned then watch for the the same signs, but the time of abstaining will be 4-7 days. Wait to have sex until you are dry. I recommend the books "The Art of Natural Family Planning" and "Taking Charge of your Fertility", both will explain in greater detail and also teach how to take basal body temperature, and chart your signs which is too hard to explain in a few sentence. My husband and I used this both to avoid getting pregnant and then we reversed the rules and used it to get pregnant. It is great without hurting our bodies by taking pills, shots, inserting devices ect. And it is free! Best wishes.

usually a dr will tell you that you shudnt have intercorse untill after you 6 wk postpartum chk up. and as always abstinence is always the best method for birth control unless you in a relationship ofcourse you wouldnt want to abstaine but ive heard good thing and bad things about all birthcontrol it just a matter of opinion!

I don't like hormones, so I opted for the copper IUD. I spot way more than before and my periods are a little more "intense". Other than that, I'm very happy. No hormones pumping through my body, no worrying about pregnancy, and no taking anything. My doctor put it in at my 6 week appointment.
Look into it. Some people REALLY don't like it. I'm happy though.

I had a non hormonal IUD placed. At first I liked not having to worry about birth control. however, my periods became much heavier and loinger, and my PMS was awful. I am getting it taken out today. The final straw was when I started having hot flashes at 33!
