All 3 of my girls got it and no matter how much rid and nix I used nothing seemed to help, I even seriously considered cutting all our hair because I some how managed to pull off raisong them while my husband was in Iraq but this was uncontrollable and he was here! I got on the internet and heard people raving about mayo. I went out and bought a big bottle and all of us used it! I pulled out more dead lice that one night than I had for all 8 weeks! I stand behind mayo 100%!!!!

We just battled lice ourselves. I would put conditioner on my daughters dry hair and then comb through after about 20 minutes. It seemed to loosen the eggs and slow the hatched lice way down. Olive oil is messy but works. Dyeing her hair worked too. It takes a long time to get rid of them. Good luck.

can any one tell me how to get on top of head lice because i am sick and tired of treat in there hair and nothing seems to work any old fashion remadies!
I was told how to keep from getting it was to wash their hair like normal and when finished put like a quarter size amount of vinegar on the back of thier hair and work it forward and don't wash it out and then dry like normal. I sent my son to a extremly nice and expensive preschool and he ended up with lice twice and I was told about this and been using this for 2-3 years and so far so good.

Tea tree oil will will help prevent the lice from coming back. Just make sure you use one that is 100% pure essential oil. if it is synthetic it won't work as well. if you can't find any where you live go to www.tiffiny.swissjust-usa.com. you can order it online. there is also a shampoo made with tea tree, manuca and rosalina.

My stylist gave me this tip to pass on to the parents of my Kindergarteners....Tea Tree Oil. Look it up online, but she said that if you get the essential oil (available at health food stores,) and mix it with their shampoo, it will kill any living lice. Use it every day or twice a day and it should take care of the problem by killing off anything new. Also, you can mix it with distilled water and put it in a squirt bottle. Then spray the hair and it will do the same thing. My advice to parents about the house is to either wash EVERYTHING in HOT water or wash everything used daily. The rest of the stuff stick into big garbage bags and tie tightly. After about a week with no 'food supply' (blood) they'll die off. Remember to do sheets, blankets, clothes, stuffed animals etc. As for the carpet...I'm not entirely sure- but I bet there is a spray or powder formula for this problem. Check it out online. I have a student in my class who has it constantly. I'm guessing the entire house is infested. I feel horrible for her and I'm sure it's a nightmare. I hope this helps!!

My two younger daughters got head lice several time and I was about to go nuts. Then my mother in law told me what she used to do. Someone who ran a daycare told her this is what she did and never had a problem after that.
STEP 1: Soak their hair in olive oil over night, this kills any live lice.
Beware that they will say their head hurts because olive oil is so thick it is suffocating the lice. So they will feel a pinching for a little while.
STEP 2: Then in the morning scrub their head with normal shampoo to get all the oil out you
Will see the lice that were once alive fall out of their hair.
STEP 3: Take 50% pine sole and 50% water and mix pour the mixture in their hair and shampoos
For no more than 5 minutes.
STEP 4: At CVS you can buy Olive Oil shampoo / Conditioner (this is in the ethnic hair care)
I highly recommend this to use after using the pine sole. It puts all the moisture back into the hair that has been depleted.
STEP 5:during the conditioning part takes the lice comb and go thru their hair and once you rinse it out you will be free of nits and lice.
Make sure you run all the bedding in the dryer as hot as you can. For no less than 30 minutes. Take your sweeper and run over the carpet / furniture and make sure you do your cars!!! Wash all their coats and hats and back packs. And be sure to treat the hairbrushes.
This whole process takes approximately 3 hours but the cost is minimal and TRULY WORKS.
AFTER 24 hours of doing this process rinse their hair in Vinegar, this strip their hair of any coatings that might be on it that allows the lice to climb the hair shaft. (This part I learned in cosmetology school)
This whole process worked for me and I have not had to worry about this since.

I can defenitly hear you on the head lice front I can tell you what to do after you take the lice out...(to remove the lice successfully find a lice squade in your arrea they sell A toxine free product and they will pick out the lice and garanty the lice removal.) Then every day apply a marvelous product called Tee Tree oil it works like a perfume so behind the ears it stinks for about 1min the oudourless or put half the botle in water in a spray bottle

My daughter has had it twice. The first time I treated her over and over, it went on for 2 weeks! I finally gave her a very short, chic hair cut and had her keep mayo on her head all day under one of those Saran bowl covers. It worked. I also heard from a friend that using gel and hairsprays liberally helps prevent re-infestation while it is still "going around". I covered my daughter's hair for a few weeks with LA Looks gel and it went away for the year.

Well I didn't like the idea of using chemicals on my babies heads and I wanted to kill the live ones and get rid of the eggs so I downloaded the life cycle of the nit and found out that the eggs hatch in 9 days so I washed her hair but left the conditioner in and wrapped her head in glad wrap (to suffocate the live ones) then after about 2 hours put her back in the shower and washed away the 'bodies'!! Then just repeated this 9 days later!! I also went through the hair and manually got out any eggs I could find but as long and you repeat 9 days later any that escaped will suffocate and die! YEY!!

My sister makes up a spray bottle with water, tea tree oil and lavender. She uses it on the kids hair every morning before school ( it's great for putting up girls ponytails). This helps prevent, rather than treat!

Dog shampoo has always worked for me. Get the flea and tick kind and it will not harm your kids. If it works for your dog, why not lice. Also, if you go to Walmart in the lice section there will be a comb with really tight together teeth. There is also something called Lice Spray. It smells like flowers and is used to help prevent lice from reoccurring. It has something to do with them not liking the smell. I used it on my daughter and she never got lice again. It couldn't hurt. good luck.

The best way is to prevent head lice in the first place. Tell the kids ot put their hats inside the sleeves of their coats that way they don't come in contact with other hats.. Hope this helps...

Some tips I have been given to help from getting lice at all is to only wash your childs hair every 3 days (or long if possible). Lice cannot stick as easy to dirty/oily hair. Also, if your child has long hair, you should braid it or put it in a ponytail. Lice find it harder to get into tight spaces.

Hi, there is a treatment that the children's hospital use to treat headlice, you mix equal amounts of vinegar and mineral oil and you apply to the hair and use a fine comb after leaving it on for 20 to 30 mins and wash hair after with regular shampoo, hope that helps

There is a product that we got at one of the pharmacies called the Robi comb. It runs on batteries. It looks like an electronic version of the little metal combs you get for the nits. It makes a high pitch sound and you comb it through dry hair. When the noise stops, it found something and shocks the nit or the lice and kills it instantly and when you comb it out with the Robi - it is dead. We have found this to be a God Send. It was only 30 bucks! After all the shampoos we bought, it has more than paid for itself.

Hello,
I was told by a hairdresser to use advantage flea treatment for dogs up to 4kg. So i went to the vet and they said that it is fine to use as long as you are not putting it directly on their scalp you put it on their hair strands in three or four places and that is it. So i tried it this was 3 yrs ago and never gone back my kids (4 of them) have never got it since i do it once a year just in case. Oh and it is also a myth that you have to wash and steralise everything when a child has nits as the nit can not survive off the hair for any longer then 30 mins neither can the eggs.

When I was in elementary I had them (ick) and RID worked for us. I do know that it is harder for them to survive in dirty hair than in clean hair so keep it unwashed for a day or two. Also, after the fact, a neighbor suggested covering my head in vaseline. She said that worked on her girls. Good luck and I'm sorry... for the both of you!

The daughter of a friend of mine had lice and the doctor suggested putting olive oil in the hair and combing the eggs out. Lice can't hold onto slick surfaces. He also suggested she put it on her hair while her daughter had this so the lice didn't go from one head to another. He added that this is also good for hair on top of it. He didn't recommend the shampoo. He said it won't work.

My son never had lice, thank goodness, but I was told this was probably due to the fact that we used hair gel to style his hair. It supposedly is a deterrent. Maybe you want to try this, any brand will do we bought whatever was on sale at the time.

I have also heard that it's a good idea to straighten your daughter's hair once you've washed (in whatever method you choose) and used the lice comb to get rid of the lice - 'cos obviously the heat from the straightening iron kills the eggs that are clinging to the hair! I tried it with my daughter. Lice is a problem in schools - but unfortunately lice like clean hair lol - so it seems almost contradictory to keep on washing the hair and combing the lice out at times. When my children were at primary school (years 0-6) whenever a child had lice in class they were supposed to inform the teacher and a letter would go home to all the students advising of an outbreak. But my daughter used to say that the child who had them, had them so bad you could see the lice running around her head ... and she was always scratching. I think the public health nurse or whomever needs to step in and perhaps educate the parent(s) if it's an ongoing matter ... and in the cases in my childrens' classes, it's been children from poorer families (those who can't afford the proper school uniform or who go to school without food etc) who have the lice.

I came across someone's post in another group about how they dealt with their kids lice. It's for parents who do not want to use harsh chemicals. Their solution was this: 1 litre of cheap hair conditioner- pour off about 3/4- 1 cup and leave the rest in the bottle. Add 50ml lavender oil, 50ml tea-tree oil, 50ml eucalyptus oil.[make sure they are 100% not diluted oils] Hope that helps everyone. ps.
Screw the lid back on and shake until well mixed. Cover their heads with it, making sure that it's through their hair. Leave on for at least 10mins and rinse out. Do this everyday, for 4-5 days and problem is solved.
The hair conditioner method, needs NO extensive combing.
You need to do all the family. Because headlice like everyones head. Short hair, long hair etc., She suggested covering the hair with a plastic shower cap while the conditioner is left in during bathtime.

I use tea tree oil too. the main thing is that you must get every single nit from the hair. you must do all the childs bedding and stuffed animals should be in plastic sealed tight for a few months. I have tea tree oil in our shampoos. I put a several drops in the bottle of shampoo and it does help to keep them away. Providing you wash there hair every few days if not sooner. I have a 7 yr old who comes home with this all the time. No one else in the house has it or gets it only her. She is the one who refuses to wash her hair everyday and fights tooth and nail over getting her head wet. She sounds spoiled but isn't it is all due to her past life.. (when much younger) and not from anything here at our home. so it is hard to keep her free of bugs. I don't know any other way to do it myself.

My daughter had a very bad case of it, very long hair. I tried treatment 2 times but realy the only thing that worked was a nit comb and pulling the nits off her hair by hand. The treatment does kill the live ones but it's a chemical and dangerous. Bottom line, nothing works unless you get rid of all the eggs so popo in a movie and pick away! There is a special comb out there that looks better than the usual one, i think it's called the lice meister.

Oh, my gosh! Does this bring back memories! And not the good kind! I had six kids that attended private school and do you think for a moment they would check for head lice at the beginning of the school year?? Of course not, they always waited until November so everyone could be infested! I would just sit down and cry because it seemed so overwhelming. Then I would get busy; I used the shampoo on everyone and combed out what I could, Then I made sure to use the blow dryer on everyone for the next two weeks to be sure that any nits that had escaped by vigilance were killed. I sprayed the car and furniture, bagged everything that was loose for two weeks, and laundered all of the bedding and coats, washed the combs and brushes, etc, etc, etc. By doing this, I would usually be okay. At least until the next school year started!! Good luck to you, Sweetie, I don't envy you. Take care; :-)

The best thing I found for treatment of head lice was to use rubbing alcohol. Mix a solution of 3/4 rubbing alcohol and 1/4 water in a spray bottle.Spray everything in the house, curtains, floors, beds, stuffed animals, etc... Then completely wet hair with the solution and llet sit for 30 min. Wash with soap as normal. Do the hair every other day for 1 week. Then treat your whole house again.

When I had my son and was first home from the hospital, both my girls got head lice. Yuchy! My mom - in - law insisted we rinse their hair with white vinegar. Well after about 1/2 gallon of vinegar and the lice were just thriving in it, I called the pediatrician..they said to use the product Rid...so I bought 2 boxes (and earplugs...mom in law wasn't happy with my solution), well not only did the lice go away so did mom-in-law. The girls were 10 and 5 at the time.
