My 4 yr old son is currently in a Britax Decathalon. My almost 1 year old daughter is in an infant seat she growing out of. We were thinking to move her to the Decathalon, and to get a booster-type seat for my son. However, we would like to keep him in a 5-point harness for as long as possible. Many models seem to switch to using the car's seat belt at 40 lbs, (which he is almost) and would prefer one that has a higher weight limit. So what we are trying to figure out is do we:

A - Find a booster/convertible seat for my son in which he is able to be in a 5-point harness for 65 lbs, or so, and move our daughter to the Decathalon

OR

B - Keep my son in the Decathalon for now (as it will go up to 65 lbs with a 5-point harness), and find a convertible for my daughter?

Have done lots of research on this on my own, and we love Britax, however would like to see what others would do, and get some ideas. Thanks!

(Ack, I just typed all this out and then it got deleted!)

If you're wanting a booster and he meets the requirements for a booster, I'd look at the Graco Nautilus (5-pt to 65 lbs, then converts to high back and low back booster) or Britax Frontier (5-pt to 65 lbs, then converts to high back).

If you're wanting a new seat for your daughter, I'd look at the following: Britax Roundabout 50 or Marathon, Sunshine Kids Radian, First Year's True Fit, Graco MyRide65 or Evenflo Triumph Advance. The MyRide65 is nice because you could RF your daughter to 40 lbs, the highest available on the market in the US. The True Fit & Radian have tall shells, so you'll get longer use in that regard. The Britax seats and the Radian are the only ones you can tether while RF. Also, if you're looking to put multiple seats across a car, you may need a Radian as it is the narrowest available. The new Roundabout50 is basically a fewer-frills version of the Marathon (albeit with a slightly lower weight limit, which really doesn't matter much since kids usually outgrow those seats by height rather than weight).

If you haven't checked already, I'd make sure that your son really is still fitting in the Decathalon. Remember that it's not just weight that matters. If his shoulders are above the highest harness slot or if the tops of his ears are above the top of the seat shell, then he's outgrown it.

I have a Britax Regent and it goes to 80 lbs...I love it. My daughter is only 31 lbs and is 4 yrs old, so we think she will be in it until she is 18 :) LOL...no if I were you and you can afford to get another Britax I would. I dont like the booster with just the seat belt, especially since I have such a peanut.
