I don't know much about the difference between car seats in the States and here in the UK but here there's:

infant seats for birth-approx 12-15mths (29Ibs)

combination rear facing birth-20Ibs and forward facing from 20-40Ibs

forward facing only from approx 9mths-4yrs (20-40Ibs)

high back booster with harness from approx 9mths-11yrs (20-79Ibs)

high back booster without harness from approx 4yrs-11yrs (33-79Ibs)

and finally booster seat from approx 4yrs-11yrs (33-79Ibs)



I have a high back booster seat from 9mths+ you can have if you are willing to pay postage and packing.

Honestly, I think you should sit tight and wait until your daughter is heavy enough for a booster seat. Even if her head is peeping over the top of the car seat, She still fits why replace? I think you're thinking about this too much.....it's just a few inches not a big deal...

I would look at getting her a booster with the 5 point harness on it, that is what we switched to when my daughter outgrew her forward facing seat. Works just like her other car seat but doesn't take up as much room as we have a small car. I bought it from Sears.

Did you find a car seat yet? If not, I recommend the Britax Boulevard or the Britax Frontier. My girls are very tall for their ages. My 4 year old is 45 inch so I had the same concerns as you. They are a bit pricey but you can use them for years.

I bought a car seat that is a convertable one it goes from 5 to 100 lbs spent less than 100 dollars on it too. got it at walmart

Because I didn't want to buy several car seats within the first few years of my daughter's birth, we bought a Britax Marathon Convertible car seat online at www.diapers.com for about $200. Seems high to some, but so worth it considering it has already made it 2 years and will make it for a few more. I love our car seat (not to mention that the new ones released 1-2 years ago has increased safety features, increased height/weight max limits, and is still the same price. For safety reasons, we chose to keep my daughter rear-facing until she reached 33 lbs (max rear-facing is 35 lbs), and her height was 36 inches. She's now forward-facing, 37-38 inches tall, but she is still several inches under the top of the car seat. As others have said, her height and weight have both slowed down a little. Check out all the car seat reviews (and many other baby/toddler product reviews) in the book, Baby Bargains. It has basically done all of the research for you (height/weight restrictions, reviews, ratings, complaints, etc.). Good luck!

Have you checked with your local Police department or Social Services? I know here in CA certain agencies offer car seat classes for as little as $20 and then they give you a free car seat. They give you the seat that best fits your needs. Good Luck

I agree, try walmart! I invested in an awesome one when my son was still rear facing(he's 3 1/2 now), and it goes from rear to forward to booster. I figured it was better to invest a little more $ early on than having to buy a whole bunch of different ones down the road, and believe me, the investment pays off. I absolutely love the seat I have. At the time it cost me $180, now the price may be a little higher, but as I said, worth the investment.

Walmart has several that aren't expensive. The convertible one I have for my grandson goes to 90 pounds. (it's 5 point harness until 40 pounds, then it's a booster seat until 90 pounds). Try their website.

@Krista E. I sure hope your right, for awhile there she was growing 2 inches a month....I measured her a few months ago but I think the doctors more accurate than mine (and my measuring tape is too short now). In a few days I will know how tall she is (cause she seems taller now all of a sudden)

Keep in mind, too, that kids grow a LOT more slowly in their second year of life. I had the same worry as you did, as my son is also a beanpole. But his growth slowed down quite a bit in his second year. She's 35 inches now, but probably won't hit 40 inches until she's well over 2 years old. So you should have at least a bit more time than you thought to save up for a larger car seat.

Yeah, but if it harnesses to 65 pounds.... I have a feeling it'll be good for more than 40 inches. ;) You can probably find cheaper if you look around at other sites, but anything under $200 for what you need is GOOD.

How about online? You could probably find some great seats that way. I can't do that since they don't ship to Hawaii, so when I got a new seat (when my son was 9 months old) I found the only option I could w/ a longer than 22 pounds rear facing option. Living in Iowa though.... shipping shouldn't be a problem. ;)

Get a better seat.... obviously. ;) I'm sure you are asking WHICH seat though. I'm not sure I can be of too much help. My son is in a Safety First convertible type (forget the exact name of it) and was rear facing til about 31 pounds and maybe 38 inches (3.25 years). He's now 4 years old and 35 pounds. I'm not too sure on his height at the moment, but his seat is good til 50 inches.
