In a delimma with car seats, booster seats to be exact. What are the new requirment for the kids to meet? As my 4 yr old is 1 1/2 mtr tall and weighs 27kg, going by old requirment lets him by weight and height sit in a normal car seat . He has outgrown his safe'n'sound booster.

Don't know what the law says in your country. The object of booster seats is to lift the child so that the adult belt sits correctly across the lap and across shoulder. In New Zealand we have a lap guide you can buy which does this but allows the child to sit in the normal seat and this is considered to be a child restraint within the law. So this may be an option for you if you can but them where you are.

I think the intention with the new laws was good, however as you see in your case, going by age is the wrong scale to use to determine who should sit in a baby seat, booster or car seat.

I think they should go by height mostly, as that's what makes sitting in a booster or car seat comfortable and safe.

You can have a really tall 4 year old and a really short 7 year old.

Not sure weight has anything to do with it and neither has age, as in your case you can see it is irrelevant.

I wonder how many other parents have come to the same conclusion? I haven't really heard, but I guess if enough parents would bring this point up to the relevant people they might reconsider the new law car seat requirements.

I am not sure of the laws where you are either, but here is what the state of NJ says:

Children under 8 years of age who weigh less than 80 pounds to ride properly secured in a child safety seat or booster seat in the rear seat of the vehicle. If there is no rear seat, the child may sit in the front seat, but s/he must be secured by a child safety seat or booster seat.

Children under 8 years of age who weigh more than 80 pounds to ride properly secured in a seat belt.

Hope this helps.

I'm not sure of the laws, but I know that my straps in my truck don't fit my 7 or 10 yr olds so they have booster seats. They will stay in boosters until the safety belts fit them without modifications.
