Castor oil only partially working?

before i ask, i want to say that i really don't want any negative feedback. i just joined circle of moms hoping that it's not like the rest of the forums, where moms want to crucify you for saying the wrong thing.

i've read a lot about castor oil - yes i know the risks and i also know the benefits. so yesterday i decided to give it a whirl. around 2:30pm i took 1 tbsp with 8oz of oj. nasty. i thought i was eating my chapstick. waited and waited and waited, was even hoping to get a stomach ache so i knew it was doing somethinggg. but nothing. around 6:30pm i started getting killer contractions, to the point i started crying. they were 3 minutes apart and lasted for about 45 seconds. had hubby rub my back, drank anotherrrrr glass of water. just as the hour and a half mark was coming up (i was going to call my doctor then), BAM they stopped.

so my question being... is that normal? is it normal not to get diarrhea and is it normal for the contractions to just stop. i'm tempted to take some more this morning because i did take a really low dose of it.

and positive feedback only pleeeeease!

You forcing yourself into labor with something as harsh as castor oil may actually prevent you from having a vbac. Your contractions from what I understand are much stronger. One of the worries with a vbac are rupturing your uterus, so it is best not to take such a viscous labor induction liquid such as castor oil. Try sex, or getting your membrane swept by the doctor. Along with walking, this really might get things moving.

[deleted account]

There is nothing wrong with your reasons behind wanting to induce your labour, but I wouldn't be taking castor oil. Try drinking raspberry leaf tea instead.

I think it is ridiculous your doctor will not sweep your membrane. it is safe, quick, and is better than anything else for inducing labor. Sorry to tell you but I honestly don't think your doctor is truly supporting your vbac. Please be emotionally and mentally prepared for a second c section. I don't want to upset you, but just being realistic.

Dove, you are so wrong! A scheduled c-section is no better than an emergency with recovery time. The only thing that helps is plenty of rest, and not exerting yourself. PERIOD! C-sections suck! I have had 2 emergency, and one scheduled. After my scheduled, I was having to take care of everything, my 3 1/2 year old twins, the grocery shopping, and her, and myself. I bled for 3 months and hurt for 6 or 7 months.... After my last emergency, with my last child, and a new husband, I didn't have to lift anything but the baby for 3 months. He waited on us hand and foot, did all the shopping and even changed every single diaper for our 5 day hospital stay. And I recovered with in 4 weeks.

i will agree with Dove that (from my experience too) scheduled C-Section is very very easy to handle. as for me i had two scheduled C-Sections 3years apart with my son and daughter. believe me it was great, for both times, i bled only 3 days, my scar was intact within a week, i could do everything around the house within a week, from bathing my son for school, cooking lunch for my husband, walking, and even running...

My midwife recommended

"Black kohosh" in tincher or tea form. (found at natural health food stores)

It will cause your uterus to start contracting, begin taking at 37 weeks. I also drank red raspberry leaf tea through out my pregnancies.

Both my boys came 11days early! :)

I don't know about the contractions but if I were you I would call your MD ....it is possible that you may have an obstruction which is very serious!

If you want to have a vaginal birth, you should ask your doctor about getting the hormone string. Forgive me that I cannot remember the exact name for it. But it is a string that is inserted into the vagina that triggers your body to go into labour. And althought the chances of it working. Are a low percentage, I had it and was completely please with the outcome. After 2 hours on monitors to make sure my body didn't stress with it in I went home. It was inserted at 10am and I was home by 12 30 PM. I started to get nice come stomach pains by 2 PM. And very naturally went into deeper labour each hour. it wasn't over welming cause it allowed my body to get used to contractions by the nice steady progress :) I finally had her at 5 31 am the following morning, all natural.

I understand wanting to help the baby along. I have never heard of castor oil)p not working before but I have heard about the hard contractions and stories of women delivering in the car because it was so fast. I would highly suggest blue cohosh tincture or cauliphylum (my spelling may be off) they are safer ways of inducing and will only work if the baby is ready to come out. Just follow the instructions, orask an herbalist for instructions. There is aso a book called the child bearing year.

I used the same method over 27 years ago. It works just let the process take its course. Preferably you don't want diarrhea. The consistent contractions is your goal. I delivered a 9lb 1oz baby boy.

Castor oil is not the way to go. It doesn't start labor and will eventually give you diahhrea. I'd call your doctor and explain what you did and what happened. I tried many of the so called labor inducers and my baby was still 12 days late! It will happen when your body is ready :) I know its hard to wait but its worth it!

You were probably not having contractions but you have made you bowels contract...so just relax baby comes when baby is ready and as this is from a month ago your little bundle of joy has no doubt arrived.

Castor oil can cause your baby to have a bowel movement. I don't understand what benefits you are speaking of and every mother on any site is going to have an opinion if they feel a child is being harmed (some take it too far a do the whole mommy bashing thing). Please do not take anymore castor oil. I have known someone to do this and their baby a bowel movement in the womb and passed away. The risks out weight any 'benefits'. You're baby will come when they are ready. No need to rush things and risk hurting them.

Try nipple stimulation. I have a friend who went into labor this way with 2 of her kids. And it's fun for the hubby too before he starts working so long. Try it it works and is safer than oil

I was ready to try anything to get my daughter here. I learned what works for one person may not work for the next. I was induced by steak cooked more rare than medium rare like i normally eat. if the contraction stopped i would have called the doctor. I would have been scared out of my mind.

If anything, I'd suggest trying an alternative method. I've heard several people who live by the castor oil thing, and several who have said it didn't do anything but make them feel like total hell. Have sex, stay hydrated, and walk walk walk walk walk. It'll happen when it's supposed to. I wish you luck.

Through experience working in labor and delivery, it will give you cramping that will feel like contractions but it's just the castor oil giving you stomach cramps. You can do what you choose, but I do not recommend this at all. It's not good for you or your baby in my opinion.

You have to be fully ready for it to go. I did 2oz in a glass of OJ (I agree nasty!) at around 6pm and went into labor at 11pm. Of course I was all ready 3 C and 50 % effaced when I went to my appointment the day before. I wasn't having anything other than braxtin hicks before.

I have a friend who tried and it didn't work because she wasn't ready. It technically clears the way for the baby to come down by cleaning you out. Good luck!

When i was pregnant with my daughter, I was so sick of being pregnant, i had one week to go, but i was miserable, my friend had suggested castor oil, So March 12 at 6:00pm i had drank 4 ounces of castor oil, and let me tell you, the taste WAS HORRIBLE tryed orange juice to get it down, even a slurpee, Hours had went by and nothing happened, so i figured it was a lost cause the next morning around 5am, i had lost my mucus plug when i had went to the bathroom, Around noon i had started feeling contractions, then I had admitted to the hospital around 4 pm, and my contractions had stopped, so my nurses thought they were going to Discharge me already, they had checked me, and i was already 5cm dilated. 6pm came by, broke my water and by 11pm, i had my baby girl

Next am my baby girl was here and my friend did it and it worked for her! I wouldn't use it for upset stomache! It can be used to help w/constipation! Good luck.

I took the oil with my 3rd. I didn't let God have His way. It was not a good experience. I had diarrhea. I had false labor. I wasn't ready. I was kept at hospital and they put me in labor next morning. It sped things up too fast. Was worn out. Let God have control. He'll send the baby when it's time.

Hey moms! I'm in need of some input... I am now 39 weeks pregnant and trying for a VBAC. I have been 1cm dilated for 3 weeks & 50% effaced for 1 week. My OB is convinced I should just do a repeat csection & has told me that my baby boy is going to be "a big 8-9lb'er) blah blah! That's the same story they told me with my 1st son & he was 7lb 1oz -- anyhow I had my 1st csection due to my baby being breech but this time my son is head down & putting lots of pressure on my pelvic/pubic bone. I've been told to walk walk walk-- which I do anyway coz I am chasing a 2yr old all day & id like to say I'm pretty active. But I am really trying to avoid a repeat csection & time is crunching down.... ANY RECOMMENDATIONS!? Please :)

Don't waste your time. When I was pregnant with my Daughter my sister was in the Navy. She was going to be home May 19th, however her one and only neice wasn't due until May 30th. So like you I had the brilliant idea to try this old wives tale, hoping she would be born while my sister was home. Long story short and two count 'em TWO bottles of Castor Oil and a long visit to the toilet later, my daughter was born on May 28th. You can't rush God!

If you have a stroller yet pack it as heavily as you can and take it out. Thats what I did and it took about an hour of walking then came back and bounced and rolled around on an exercise ball. I ended in labor and not needing anything to help with dilating.

Mariette, The problem is you need 2oz of Casteroil. I instruct my clients to chase it with root beer. OJ will not mix with oil, but if nothing is happening in 2-3 hours, repeat the 2oz dose. Just pour into a large spoon and down it like medicine. I also don't expect it to work unless your baby is at 40 or more weeks. Melanie Dossey, CNM

My doula recommended castor oil so a week before my due date I took it. I started off with the dose you did and I had to take a little more for it to actually give me diarrhia which is what helps to cause the contractions. I started getting consistant contractions then they stopped like yours. My doula told me that no matter what you do, if your body is not ready, you would not go into full labor. So a week after my due date they were going to induce me so I tried it again. It worked this time and I had her the next day!!! She was very healthy and did not have a bowel movement while in me. I dont see anything wrong with trying to make yourself go into labor if you are right at your due date or after!!!

It isn't castor oil you want. It is COD LIVER OIL. 4 oz poured from the bottle into the very back of your throat. Don't let it touch your tongue before you swallow. Just swallow hard and quick. If you are ready to go into labor, you will start within a few hours. Diarreah is supposed to happen because it works like an enema. It just depends on how recently you ate. I did this with two of my three children and it worked each time. A nurse told me to try it so I did. I am an advocate.

Hey so much for people not posting negative comments....

Anyways. Tried it with my first son n it didn't work. The Jamaican's gave me their home remedy of thyme tea n that worked.....with my second I drank a box of red raspberry leaf tea n walked the mall n that worked fast....I was overdue n uncomfortable so my doctor also performed a membrane sweep then I drank the tea n walked.

Good luck. And remember to brush off the negative comments....your body, your baby and your decisions.

That can happen, most midwives recommend 2 tablespoons put into ca chocolate shake, it's easier to get it down. If it doesn't work then your body was probably wasn't quite ready even though your mind was.

I had that a week before my successful attempt. I took mine in an omelet but full 4 oz. bottle. I was told eat half the omelet with castor oil then wait an hour, if no puke, diarrhea or contractions, heat up other half and try again. First half I threw up and second half cleared me out. About 12 hours later I was in full labor and very quickly after my water broke. I was 40 weeks and did not have my membranes swept.

I used Castor Oil with my oldest daughter and again with this baby which is now number 4. Both times it has worked, but it is only going to work at all if the baby is ready to come on any ways if not than you are truly just torturing yourself. With my oldest daughter I took a lot at one time and that was a really bad idea, with this baby I started slow 1 tbs every hour till I made it up to 2 oz along with Primrose oil and red raspberry tea I started that earlier today and I am now in full labor but refusing to go to the hospital till I know they will just go ahead and take him and not stop it.

But I do want to tell you that it will not only cause contractions to start and get very bad very soon you will have the worst diarrhea you could ever imagine the cramps and the contractions mixed together is really painful and you will swear that you are peeing out your butt. But when the diarrhea stops and the cramps for it finally stop your contractions will regulate and start coming in a better way so to speak so that you can track them. Before you know it the biggest pain you will have is the contractions.

Like I said it does really work especially if you mix it with the other stuff I used, at least it did and is for me I just want to also tell you how my body reacted since the internet does not preepar you for it. I decided the pain and everything is worth it if that means going ahead and getting this little guy on his way.
