Okay, so I check on my baby TONS while she is sleeping to make sure she is still breathing. She is about 12 weeks old. How many other moms do this?

My son is now five and I still check on him a few times a night. When he was a baby I did have a video moniter. That made me a little more comfortable so I could see and hear him.

I still check on my daughter before I go to bed. She is almost 5 and I will probably do it forever! Totally a mom thing!!

Yes, did this constantly, even waking him up on occasions!! He's a strapping 13 year old and still check when we come to bed!! I also used to stare at him for ages while he was sleeping cos he looked so cute, he still does now when he's sleeping!!

I too check but we also have a monitor that can sense if he stops and will sound off an alarm. So that is reassuring as well. the only downside is remembering to turn it off once I take him out of te crib for a middle of the night feeding.

I totally did this...with every one of my babies! It can become an obsession...I think the key is, we cannot be ruled by FEAR! Remember...the media is in our house day and night with stories about babies dying, but the fact is, the percentage of infant deaths is so very low, that it's sad that our televisions have to fill new moms with fears like these! I chose not to vaccinate my children, but if I had, I think I would have been extra cautious right after any immunizations. Don't worry...your sweet little one is healthy and will THRIVE!

With all the talk of SIDS, I do the same and my son is my 3RD child, lol. I think it is only natural, and we are all normal moms just making sure our kids are okay. When i had my oldest who will be 13 next month, they told us to put them to sleep on their side or stomach. Now its "Back to Sleep" which to me, I am always worried "what if he spits up and chokes and I am not in the room to hear it and save him?" So, my son, thankfully has always been a stomach sleeper and my pediatrician said it is fine as long as I AM checking him periodically. He is 7 months old now, and not a problem at all. If he sleeps on his back at naptime he takes a 10 minute nap, if he is on his stomach, 2 hours. So, I'll check him as often as I have to if it means i get that extra time to be Me for a bit and get my cleaning and laundry done!!

i have done it...and dont let any one tell u not to or they will be fine....u never know........my daughter actually passed in her sleep at 11 months old..she was sick like 2 times ever but not recently... nothing was wrong with her, no genetic issue or illness...we had been letting her cry herself to sleep for 2 months..if we got her we were up til 12 or later......i say who cares.....get them, hold them, check on them.....i would trade getting some sleep over not having my baby here any more......our SIDS mom's will say there are monitors out there but most aren't really all that helpful and drive u nuts...there is no known cause for SIDS but "preventions" are keeping stuff away from faces, no pillows or excessive toys or blankets in sleeping areas.....and they say to not co sleep... one lady in our support group did and they said it contributed...but my first child slept with us and still does and he was fine as she was not in her crib....who knows right or wrong.....

It's normal, especially when babies are very new. It does gradually wear off a bit as they get older. It just shows that you are a loving mother, well attuned to the safety needs a new human life...

When i was 7/8 my brother died at the age of 8month's of cot death and i used to go in to my mums room and hold him and fall to sleep in my mum's bed. and that night i didnt and i felt it was my fault he died. and coz of that i have checked on both my kids in the night 2yrs & 8months old and i know my brother's other half does it but she also checks on my brother as well i think it just makes some people feel better

I always do, even more now that my 3 month developed RSV and stopped breathing in the middle of the night. He spent 5 days in the hospital recovering. Do what makes you feel better for peace of mind.

i did it when my kids were infants, and i still check on them before i go to bed now =) i call it "mothering while they sleep" (they are 4 and 6 now...)

That is totally normal, although I got my son some Angel Care monitors that detects when your baby is breathing and it ticks every second.. The alarm goes off if it detects that your baby has not been breathing for 20 seconds. It is a big releif to have a monitor incase, because you are alerted in just 20 seconds. =

They are alot better than alot of other monitors.. You can get them from Target $210.00 =] Sometimes they have them on sale. But a great choice for a great peace of mind..

I still do that and mine are 4 and 5 years old I doubt it ever goes away for some of us.

I do it a bit less though than when they were so small.

My sister still does it and her twins are 13 now.

I guess it is just a fear that we have that something will happen while they are asleep.

I certainly did with mine! For about the first year and then I didn't seem to feel the need to. It may be an instinct.

I did it with all four kids - we hear so much about sids and it's so scary, so yeah, everytime I got up at night I'd check on the babies to make sure they were still breathing

I did it with all four of mine. I did it the most with my oldest now 15. I think its a new mom thing. Is a matter of fact, I could not tell if she was breathing one time and it rubbed her belly to make her move.I think as you go you fet less freaked about stuff. But there are so many fears as a new mom, so it just goea along with it.

[deleted account]

I did it for the first while with my first baby, until my hair tickled his cheek, and he wallopped me in his sleep. That cured me of that habit pretty quickly! ;)

My little girl is just over 9 months and I still check her breathing at night. I think it is more just out of habit and an excuse to go in her room to see her sleep because since she moves around a lot while she sleeps I already know she is fine.

I have five kids, ages 9,8,6,5, and 2. I still get up a few times a night and check them all! They slept in a bassinet next to our bed when they were tiny and in a crib in our room until they were two. I would even bring the bassinet with me during the day, so I could keep an close eye on their breathing/sleeping. You are perfectly normal!

I still do it. My oldest is 4 yrs old, my middle children are 2 and youngest is 7 mths...don't know when I might stop. The oldest is more to see if he is covered, but to also to see if he is okay, the other 3 is for breathing no doubt.

It's totally normal. I think all of us moms do it from time to time. I did it alot when my son was real little. He's 2 1/2 now and I check on him right after he falls asleep and before I go to bed.

i think as a mum its a normal thing to do, i still occasionally check my 17 yr old as she suffers from sleep apnea, especially at the moment as she is heavily pregnant and the extra weight she is carrying can affect it, i also constantly check my granddaughter who is only 1 yrs old, as she is in my care, it is normal.

yes.. i went crazy doing this.. literally no sleep... one time i went in to my sons bedroom, he was about 4months at the time, and he was sleeping on his stomach for the first time. It scarded me so i hurried up and picked him up, he felt so stiff i started to freak out.. Then he woke up and i was relieved after that i litterally checked on him every 15 mins because i was so scared.. Then i recently bought a delux graco angle movement monitor.. I love it and i can actually sleep now.. it makes me feel sooo much better totally worth the 150 bucks, i wish i would of had it from birth, i would of gotten much mor sleep.. now my son is 5 1/2 mo old and i love it..

I did it with my first, but not so much my second. My first was a very sound sleeper, the second one whimpered all night unless he was in bed with me. My mom told me she had to check on me all the time because I was so much quieter than my older brothers while I slept. I guess it depends on the mom and the baby.

[deleted account]

I do it! I think all moms do. I would especially for the first few months. I would put my finger under his nose and put my hand on his chest to make sure, there were a couple of times where I honestly didn't think he was breathing so I would pick him up... which woke him and made him really mad lol. I don't think I slept at all for the first few months lol. I still check on him occasionally and he's 18 months now.

Check your baby as much as you feel you need to check her...one of my friend told me that i check on her way to much, but if i want to check on her i will. Do what you feel is right.

I do this a lot too. More now then before, she caught a pretty bad cold and it worries me. Shes about to be four months old on the third and i occasionally find myself looking at her chest to make sure shes still breathing. I think most moms tend to do it and i believe its more subconscious then anything.

My son just turned 6 months and I check on him CONSTANTLY. If I don't physically put my hand on him to check it I'll listen for it as I'm going to sleep or at the very least peek in his crib.
