Be careful with teething biscuits. Out ped. does not recommend them at all! The baby will gum at the chunk and it will break off, but a lot of times there is a large piece that gets in their mouth and it will still be hard and they can choke. Just something to think about, be careful! Cheerios will dissolve faster and are not as large when they have just one in their mouth. My older two kids were eating them at around 6 months, but my little one now has no teeth (my other two had 4-6 by 6 months) and is not sitting up that great on his own, so we have not tried yet. I am going to start the Gerber Puffs first since his big brother loved those so much at his age.

I wouldn't.. If your daughter has no teeth at all, I think it would be best to wait until she got at least a couple in and knows how to chew food [w/ her teeth]. That way there is less of a choking risk for her. Gerber Puffs are great.. WalMart also has some (Parent's Choice) that come in a few different flavors and are at least a dollar and a half cheaper. Also, if she hasn't tried the Gerber wagon wheels, those are really good. They don't dissolve quite as fast as the puffs, but that may help her with chewing more, even if it's just with her gums. Just be sure to watch her with them and if she starts to choke, hold off a little longer on those as well. Good luck!

I didn't give my son Cheerios until about 14 months b/c I was afraid he would choke on them (he also didn't get his first 2 teeth until 11 1/2 months). I just gave him Gerber and Parent's Choice Puffs until about 14 mo. and after that he took to Cheerios well. If she's choking on them, I would wait a little longer.. Maybe a couple weeks or so, and then try again.

babies eating cheerios? sorry everyone but I don't think cheerios are very good for babies. My kids were two before they got to eat cheerios.

once our son had a tooth and didn't just gulp his food down, we gave him some, I think hat was about 7 months. He HATED them, they are one of the few foods that he will only eat if he sees other kids eating them, then of course he wants some.

We also started with something larger to chew on, so they got the hang of chewing/biting. Teething briskets worked the best for this, and he loved them! I would try giving him larger things to bite on to get the hang of it before giving him more cheerios.

The best thing to start with would be Farley's Biscuits, as they are made for babies who have few or no teeth. The actually melt as soon as they get wet, so there is no real risk of choking (even if some slipped down their throat, it would dissolve quickly enough to not be a real issue). As for other "crunchy" things, it really depends on how many teeth they have, and how used to using them they are. They do need to have at least 2 teeth on top, and 2 on the bottom before they can really learn to "chew" things properly with their teeth. Also, the crunchier things tend to need some back teeth - for grinding. That's not to say that some children can't chew with just front teeth, as many can, but some have more trouble with it than others. My son already had 2 teeth pop through a couple days before he turned 6 months, and he had every single tooth by his first bday, so he really didn't have much of an issue with chewing stuff. But not all kids get their teeth that fast, and some have trouble figuring out how to use their teeth properly. Serisouly, I would start with the biscuits if they only have a couple teeth. It's your safest, and best bet!

Try making her bite the cheerios and eating it piece by piece (2 or 3 pieces shoul be small enough) she will enjoy using her teeth and you won't be afraid of her chocking.

Try this for a while until you think she's ready to eat them unattended.

my son ate cheerios before he was one but my mom told me that our pediatrician always said not to give children cheerios because they are so easy to choke on.

My child was a very "gaggy" child with everything! Try starting with those "Puffs"... they melt in the mouth better than cheerios. It was a good first food for my little girl.

i started feed my son cheerios when he was almost 7 months he too did alot of gaging on it and i took it out and then let him try again!! and he did fine he does still from time to time gag on it but i've been told that cheerios are one of the safest treats to give then cause they do have the whole in the center. my son still doesn't have any teeth and he's 8 months today and i have never had problem i do however enjoy watching him gum them to death lol!!!

my son had cheerios and the veggie puff things pretty young and i think he chewed them better than he chews food now and hes three...i figure he will figure it out

Neither of my kids did well with Cheerios at first. But with my son we tried those little veggie puffs they make in the baby aisle. They disolve more easily and get them started with chewing.

you can give her gerber puffs(stars), they are small like cheerios but they melt in their mouth and come in lots of flavors!

We gave our girls Gerber Puffs, they loved them and they come in different fruit and vegetable flavors. They are designed to dissolve fast enough that kids don't choke on them. Hope this helps!

Our son started eating cheerios at 6.5 months old and we never had any problems. I'm sure that it varies from baby to baby. Maybe it's a texture thing and that's why she started gagging? If you're afraid to try again then don't otherwise if you decide to just watch her. Good luck!

we started with butter crackers, which are more crumbly and easier for her to bite off a little bit, have you been feeding her thick cereal?

I'm having the same type of questions, but I finally got baby food at the grocery store, had been using a food processor, she likes the "baby food" better. My doc friend told me that the asorbic acid makes it sweeter.



I think the number of teeth is less important then their readiness to chew.

its happened to me but i didnt try it again.. i have a two year old girl now but when she was that age i was giving her those big round cookies they melt right in the mounth i forgot what there called sorry lol.. i found it helped her learn to chew.

I gave my baby her first cheerio after she started sitting unassisted b/c she hated the mushy cereals. I watched to see if she maneuvered it with her tongue. She was just over 6 mo and surprised me with how well she did gumming it up. She's nearly 8 months now and self feeds herself cheerios and other small soft veggies that we put on her tray.



I thought my dd was on the young side to have cheerios at 6 months but she did really well so we let her have them.



Each kid is different. At 9 months- since you dd is able to pick things up and put them in her mouth and I imagine she is sitting and possibly crawling, it would make sense that she would be ready for cheerios. Try again in a few weeks and watch what she does with her tongue. Put just a few in front of her to begin with so she doesn't cram them all at once.



I have 3 kids and honestly, I think they all gag/choke on somthing at some point. We do all we can- cut it up small, give them soft foods etc- but eventually the food goes down wrong or they try to swallow too much at once. Even after they are really good at eating. If you haven't already, take an infant/child CPR class. You'll learn what to do when your child chokes on somthing and will feel more at ease.

Yeah that happened to me...So I just cut the Cheerio in half and she did good with that. I started when she was 8 months and now she does great with alot of table foods... Hope this helped
