My 6 year old has bad habbit of chewing on her finger nails. Thought it was no big deal until 3 year old also started chewing on nails. How do I get them to stop?

i used a product called Thum (you can buy it at walgreens) it looks like yellowish clear nailpolish- and it tastes HORRIBLE. makes kids stop finger sucking and nail biting. my daughter used to suck her fingers, i used this- she hated it and eventually stopped if i just mentioned putting it on her nails. the only warning- make sure it's dry before you let them do anything like rub their eyes. worked for me- very well.

It depends on the reason they are doing it. If it is because of nerves it will be hard to break if your 6 year old has been doing it awhile. If you see them doing it maybe you could give them something to keep thier hands busy. Something to twirl or play with on the wrist when they are bored or nervous. You might be able to put band aids on your 3 year old to get it to stop. The polish stuff tastes bad but wears off easily and when they eat a sandwich or anything that requires hand to mouth then they have to taste it. Hot sauce or the pepper thing might work. But only if it works, obviously it would seem mean to continue to give them something hot till they stop doing it.

I tried everything that everyone ever told me until I read a book called "Feelings Burried Alive, Never Die" by Carol or Karen Truman and I got to talk to my daughter about what exactly her problem was and she stoped instantaneously. It was amazing!

Go to the local pharmacy and ask for the "nail polish" to break the nail biting / thumb sucking habit. I can't remember the name of it now :( It paints on like polish but tastes terrible. It was cheap -- like $3. Good luck.

Damp there fingers and then put blace pepper on them! It worked for my kids!

My 3 1/2 year old has took to this habit. I hope someone has an answer for you because I need help with this one, too.
