There are always pros and cons to whatever type of surgery or procedure. When we took my daughter in for tubes and to have her adnoid removed there were risks of complications.
You need to do what is medically best for your son. If that means having the surgery, then you need to have the surgery. If him being uncircumsized is causing him physical, mental, and emotional stress, than he needs to be circumsized.
Talk to your doctor about your concerns. At the age of 2, your doctor is not going to be doing surgery that he feels is unnecessary.
We have not had our sons circumsized. BUT if it gave them discomfort or caused pain or they started having infections, we would. Because that is what is medically necessary for their health and well being.

my best friends little boy had a problem with his testicle not descending, they did the surgery and he came out fine. just ask questions and find a doctor you trust who has done the procedure and knows what he or she is doing.

surgery as done today so far s0 good:) i cried like a baby when he went in but he came out feeling back to normal within like a hour...!!!! and no home with me asleep n healthy i feel relieved thanks again for your advice and comforting words all of u

Can you discuss this with the doctor again and tell him you're having second thoughts on the circumcision? Dr's really aren't gung-ho on doing it if it's not necessary. He should be happy to accommodate you and make you feel comfortable with what ever decision you make.

thanks schmoopy.. ot something thats heavy on my mind and heart...the testicle surgery is deffinate the doctor says its best and he has to have to have it to prevent any cancer or pain in the future.. (not sure about that my friend says her sons dropped on its own at 3 n a half..but doc knows best )with the circumcision.. i feel my instincts telling me to cancel it i think with both surgeries at once it may be too much pain for him to go through..does anyone know of older aged kids/teens getting circumcised..maybe i should wait and see if problem develops or til hes at the age and wants it done? i thank you guys for the comments it means the world to me cuz i have noone to talk about it with and all i do is think and worry,iwant to make the right choice..n..no one better thn a bunch of mommies:) one more week and its happening ..i give it to god though i know nothing terrible will happen i just hate to see him in pain..so what you guys think..cuz i havent noticed any thing bad with his foreskin lately..??

I'm just guessing here, but if his foreskin is oversized for his penis right now, won't that get better with time (as his penis grows bigger)?

If I were in your shoes, I would do everything in my power to avoid elective surgery of any kind. Especially at this age - he's old enough to know what's going on and be VERY scared. Unless there's a compelling medical reason to do this, I wouldn't.

Nicole, you're not a bad mother at all. You've put a lot of thought into doing this, instead of just doing it without thinking twice. And you're doing what you have to do to keep your son healthy and well. In my book, that makes you a great mom. I'm sure your little guy will do just fine.

Of course you're not a bad mother! It will all be alright. Sometimes things are out of our control and they need fixed. It doesn't make you a bad mother at all. It makes you a good mother to be doing what is medically best for your son with his issues.

I too felt bad for my son, and I felt like I somehow screwed him up, hell he was born early AND his foreskin and urethra hole didn't grow right. We can't blame these things on ourselves though. Hang in there, it will all be okay and it will be over quicker than you think. *hugs*

well i just seen urologist today and he is getting his surgery done for both procedures inthe next few weeks.. cant stop crying..im So scared im not a bad mom right? =(

Elfrieda, hopefully it is all easy, good news for you too. I know how frightening it can be for your child to have surgery. My son had surgery on his penis to fix his hypospadius, he was around 8 months old. Lucky for them and us, surgery now a days is quick and much less invasive.

I don't have any advice as far as the circumcising question. My son isn't circed, and has no problems with peeing. I just wanted to let you know you're not alone with the worrying about our little boys and surgery options.

Mine is going to a pediatrician specialist on Thursday about his testicle which went back up when he was only five weeks old. He's 18 months, and I've heard lots of bad things that can happen if you leave it too long before operating. They like to give it a good chance to come down on its own, but before they're 2 it's better to have the operation to avoid decreased fertility and risk of cancer. :(

It's scary to think of our little boys going into surgery. I don't know what the doctor will suggest, but I don't think I'm going to like it.

That's fantastic news that you're getting in to see the pediatric urologist so quickly. And you're very smart to prepare and write down your questions -- it's so easy to forget sometimes what we want to ask. Don't be afraid to take up his time and ask all of the questions you need. This is your child, and you're his only advocate -- he deserves no less than for you to make sure you get as much information as you can.

With regards to circumcising when he's older -- sure he might decide that. But he might not.

And I think the only reason that people think circumcision is harder on men than on boys is because grown men can be SUCH over-exaggerating babies when it comes to pain! LOL! Hell, we all know what our men are like when they have a cold, right? Imagine what they're like after being circumcised! ; )

thanks guys..im still uneasy about it all bUt i am seeing the pediatric urologist on the 4th to discuss everything,im preparing questions and want to know everything if he feels it is not a good idea or necessary for the circumcision i will probably jus leave it alone til hes older and let him decide but then with that they say it might be worse for him. ..and as far as his testicle i really need more info on that.. i just want him healthy n happy in his future.. i appreciate the comments everyone. this is such a difficult thing to decide ..overwhelming especially after doing some research..:\ we shall see..

Dana's right. There ARE some cases where circumcision is the best option, if the medical condition warrants it.

I don't know too many anti-circ people who think that circumcisions should never be performed -- I think for the most part, we feel that where it's surgery, it should be treated as such and done rarely and only when needed. Too many people seem to think that circumcision is no more serious than a haircut, which is what is getting we inactivists up in arms.

So yeah, I think you've got a pretty overwhelming chorus here, Nicole -- get your son an appointment with a specialist; preferably a pediatric urologist. We can all give you advice, but none of us are medical experts.

Well, a second opinion is always good but, I think that people need to realize that there are some cases where a kid's foreskin IS messed up.

I start to get frustrated with these types of threads because people who are anti-circ end up discouraging other people when surgery might be the only option to fix a serious defect. Which is why I will agree that more than one opinion IS good and with an actual pediatric urologist.

WHy is his foreskin getting stuck? Is someone pulling it back on him?!? It should not go over the tip of the head until he is about 5 or so.

I would not do either procedure personally. There is always a chance of the teste droppping on its own. Get a second opinion before doing a major operation on your sons penis.,...cause that is what it would be at this point.

I'm going to agree with Krista on this one and disagree with Sherri. A pediatrician is not going to be enough. You need to speak with a pediatric urologist. This is their specialty and you want what's best for your child.

What does your doctor say about having him circumcised? I think you should consult with a pediatric urologist before resorting to something as drastic as circumcision -- there are probably all kinds of other, more conservative (and less risky) treatments for what is going on with your son. The pediatric urologist would also probably be better able to explain what is going on with his testicle. If you don't have a pediatric urologist in your area, even a regular urologist would probably be well-informed enough to help you with this.

I know nothing about the testicle descending, but I would go to a site and look into all her information if I were you, I would also ask her your questions. The site is a facebook site and it is peaceful parenting.
