For any help with breast feeding, I found absolutely the most helpful and knowledgeable was my local La Leche League chapter. I didn't have to join anything. Just find your closest chapter on line. They had the answers for all problems I had, and were tremendous help, and definitely seemed to have the most experience and knowledge, and very understanding and encouraging. For those of you have never heard of La Leche League, they are specialists on breast feeding and have chapters everywhere throughout the country.

It's unfortunate, Sharon, that you have had a negative experience with La Leche League. Were the mothers who tried to help actual accredited Leaders? Only Leaders may speak for and represent La Leche League.

Leaders are accredited through a lengthy process that involves education in breastfeeding management, but more importantly learning how to communicate empathy, understanding and compassion, and to actively listen to the mother they are helping.

I personally have never met a single mother, whether an actual Leader, a member, or just someone who likes to attend group meetings, be anything but warm and have an open mind. All I have experienced is acceptance of my parenting choices and have only seen acceptance for others'.

Of course LLLI has a set of principles that comprise its philosophy, but only Leaders are required to support and adhere to this philosophy in their personal lives. They are not to push this philosophy upon mothers, but educate them so that they can make an informed choice about how to care for their infants. La Leche League is a non-sectarian, single-purpose organization that seeks to inform mothers and help them enjoy breastfeeding their babies.

So, it appears that our perceptions of LLL are quite different. I acknowledge that even if the mothers who gave you the negative perception of LLL were leaders, leaders are human too, and can all too easily bring in their own personal biases while helping a mother. They shouldn't, but of course, it happens.

I love LLL. I'm sure as with any group there are bad eggs, but my local chapter is excellent. So many caring mothers with loads of helpful information.

I'm sure someone in the LLL must be good but its awfully close to KKK and they act like it too.

I have NEVER, three childbirths and at least a dozen consultations with various "leaguers" met a decent human being attached to that group.

breastfeeding is best but I hate the LLL.
