I have a 1 yr old son who just recently started being constipated. Before I take him to the doctor (because I know they have some meds for this) I want to know if anyone has any home remedies I can try.

If you have enough fluid, fiber and exercise you cannot be constipated, try looking at his diet first!

I had posted above about giving lots of pear things. I see that you've gotten a lot of replies reguarding apple juice. Be cautious with apple juice because for some people it does help, but for others it's constipating. That's why they put people on the BRAT diet with diarrhea, because Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast get rid of it.

Pears are great, easy, convenient, and work great. If he's on rice cereal, you might want to switch to the oatmeal too.

Best wishes :o)

Everyone has given great advice but one different thing I found that has worked is very light clockwise massage to your son's belly for maybe just a couple minutes throughout the day. Also while baby is on his back moving his legs bringing his knees up to his chest will help get digestive system on track. This definitely will not hurt your son and may be helpful with all the other suggestions of what to feed him!!!

Sometimes apple juice works. If he needs more help put some white syrup in it. About 1 teaspoon to one cup of juie.

if his poop is kinda whiteish, it is because there is to much fat in the milk he is drinking. My son had the same problem when he was switched to homo milk so we went with 2% and he was just fine.

Bananas will constipate also. In the baby section they sell prunes in the baby jars. Start off with a little the first day. See how it works and you can enter a few spoon fulls a week. You do not want to give him diarrhea but you want to keep him regular. I do the same for myself . My daughter is two and I have to hide the prune juice from her. She loves it.

Don't give him Apple Juice. It actually binds you. Grape juice or prune juice is best for avoiding constipation. Also try feeding him oatmeal in the mornings. That may help loosen his stool. Also avoid yogurts, they tend to make stool really hard and even harder to pass.

yes. I have a fabulous anti-constipation natural remedy. grind fresh ginger, mint leaves and add slices of lemon, cucumber to a jug. Add water and let sit for a few hours. Then drink - works great for people of all ages!

Prunes work, not to many or they have the reverse affect. There's also the homeopathic probiotics for toddlers you can buy at Target, my friend's daughter uses them for her constipation and she says it works perfectly.

there is a drink you can get for him. its a fennell drink or a little (and i mean a little) bit of sugar in a drink. also if you lay him on his back and hold his legs in the sitting postion while he tries to go. my son wasnt 1 he was 4 months old when he was constipated and these are things the doctor and midwife told me to try first before the meds.

a teaspoon of brown sugar dissolved in a glass of warmwater. Or go buy some coloxyl drops form the chemist they work well. But if it is his first time constipated what new food has he eaten ( ie lots of cheese) or has he just been dehydrated?? Keep fluids up and all will be well. :-)

have you tried applesauce, apple juice, figs....increase fiber but don't forget to increase water at the same time or you will defeat your purpose....you may also try lying him on his back, holding legs straight w/ ankles loosly in your hands, and bend knees gently towards chest and bring back to straight.....maybe rolling knees gently back and forth while knees are bent to chest.....good luck it is terrible to see the little ones having troubles.....if you can steer clear of meds they really strip the body......

My son had the same problem at that age. His Pediatrition said to use the dark Karo syrup. My mother-in-law used molasass for all of her kids and it worked great. Both have a pretty strong flavor but we would put it in the bottle with his formula. Make sure you include high fiber, fruits (not very many bananas), vegies and water. My first son was introduced to water in his bottle a few days after birth. I think now they say to wait until after the first year. Probably all the chemicals they put in it these days.

Fennel tea worked a treat for my daughter at that age. Add a' tiny' drop of honey. I was sceptical but it really helped relieve her constipation in a natural way. If he wont drink the fennel tea itself then just add 2 to 4 table spoons to some warm milk. The other way is to put a cup of it in his bath...strange sounding, i know , but it does work. Hope this is usful to you and i really hope the constipation ends. It really is an aweful thing to watch go through it because they do not know what is happening. Poor wee soul. best of health to you all

I agree apple juice works. Are you breastfeeding? Sometimes foods you eat can constipate your son.

Ruby, The best advice I can give you regarding constipation is to make sure that your child is eating plenty of fruit and getting plenty of fluids like water and fruit juice. If he will take prune juice from his bottle, that should do the trick! Also, watermelon helps the bowels to move since it is basically water and fiber. Anytime I am constipated (which isn't often) I just eat prunes, grapes, or watermelon. When my son is constipated, I give him prunes. It is good to introduce prunes to a child as early as possible because later on the child will decide that he/she "doesn't like" prunes, whether or not they've ever tasted them! My 12 year old nephew was constipated after his recent appendectomy but stubbornly refused to eat prunes, stating that he didn't like them. The child had never tasted a prune; he just didn't like the way prunes look and didn't like the word prune. Try to give your child a wide variety of foods at an early age before he decides that he "doesn't like that". Good luck!

when this happened to my son - his doc. said 1/2 water 1/2 apple juice.. and make sure they stay cool/not over dressed.. i agree with the rice cereal with iron - that was the cause for my son's constipation - so started to mix with apple juice... but plenty, plenty of water to always keep the digestive track moving!!! - hope that helps

I have the same issues with my daughter... I started her on a high fiber diet.. fruits/vegetables.. Also gave her prune juice mixed with apple juice for taste. A couple days after she was ok.. No need for meds...

Fruit and fruit juice and lots of water. Prunes and apricots are best.

My son was so constipated as an infant they wanted me to try all kinds of awful things. I boiled prunes until they were plump, removed pit and push through a strainer, after it cooled I fed it to him. You can add sugar or other fruit juice to change the taste, guaranteed to work with no side effects.

My 2 year old gets stopped up very easily. We found a regiment that works well as long we keep it consistent. She has no processed sugar or processed grains in her diet; 3-5 servings of fruit or vegetable daily; unfiltered apple juice diluted with 3 parts water 2 times a day. Also, we changed her milk to 2% and make sure all grains are whole grains. Oatmeal with raisins is a staple in her diet. And I found that bananas stop her up good, although she loves them. I make sure they are really ripe and she never gets more than 1 over the course of 2 days.

you can give myrolax I think its spelt wrong, its over the counter half a cap. Thats what the dr prescribed my son and daughter, some home remedies are too harsh and can drain them too much.

RICE MILK. My daughter was HORRIBLY constipated (bleeding, etc.) and after trying prunes, juice, corn syrup, etc. someone finally gave me this suggestion. It is the only thing that worked for her. It took a week or so to become effective, but she's been fine ever since.

Are you still giving him a bottle? The Karo syrup warmed up and mixed with a drink, formula, or whatever, works wonders. My daughter was almost a year and was constipated for the first time and my mom told me to try the syrup, and half way through the feeding she had a major BM. It was great, I didn't want to take her to the doctor.

Also...it could be the iron in the formula...sometimes that will happen.

Karo Syrup in warm water (1-2 Tablespoons of syrup, 2 ounces of water). Warm cloth on the tummy. Rubbing his tummy in a clockwise motion. Bicycling the legs.
