I'm a little nervous about 2 tablespoons of Miralax for a small baby!. I gave my strapping 15 year old 140lb son one tablespoon a few weeks ago and he was in the bathroom, with abdominal cramping and unable to stop going for about 12 hours. I can't imagine what it would do to a little one.

Because your baby is at such a young age, personally I do recommend that you bring her in to see your. pediatrician. The reason apart from her age, is that her system is still developing. My youngest son had similar problem. Come to find out he developed antibodies against my breast milk and regular baby formula so his doctor switched him to soy milk which was a lot easier on his digestive system. Also, give her lots of fluids to drink. She may go frequently to go potty, but it'll help her constipation problem quite a bit. Fibrous foods like peach, peas help, too.

Please use Miralax as a last resort, laxatives are never good even non habit forming ones. My oldest struggled with constipation, lots of high fiber fruits and vegetables if you are feeding solids. Plus skip cereal and bananas and meat and crackers for a few days and if the problem continues use these foods sparingly. squash and prunes not the juice the fruit work pretty well.

I used to do the same things as Stacy Kopczyak with good results (Fleet Baby Enema & Miralax). My older daughter (who is 11 1/2 yrs old now) had constipation problems for years. Finally, Miralax came out & solved all of our constipation problems. Originally we needed a prescription for it, but now it is over the counter. I can tell you from experience that the (pediatric gastroenterologist) doctor had me start with 1/2 a capful (in water, juice or whatever she would drink down) when she was 4 yrs. old. He said that if her stool became too loose to cut it back; and if it was too hard still to add a little more. He is fine to take long-term because it draws more water into the stool to loosen it. It was the best thing ever. I only wish I knew about it sooner. I would start with the Fleet baby enema until you can talk to your doctor about the Miralax (Your baby is 8 mos. so you might feel more comfortable getting the doctor's ok first.) I also tried the old thermometer trick when mine were babies and it did often work like a charm. Good luck!

i know that alot of parents dont agree with this trick but i give my kids peppermint and it always does the trick. either a thick candy cane or those pastel mints. peppermint is a natural tummy soother and we use it for everyone in the house. and its alot easier to give than most other things

Never use a petroleum based products as a lubricant on people. If you must use a lubricant on your children use KY or whatever you may be using. I keep a small tube of KY in with my rectal thermometer and that is the only thing I ever use. Petroleum jelly is not water soluble and can harbor infection.

Rice constipates. It is part of the B.R.A.T. diet when children have stomach issues including diarrhea. I would never use any sort of pro biotic without first consulting your pediatrician she is very young. Miralax is good but again she is young. Try the prune juice.

Dairy is constipating (even adult cows when force fed milk, had GI issues :-). Water, fiber, fruit...all great suggestions. We all take optiflora probiotics (the good bacteria) at our house. Get a new doctor. Watered down prune juice should do the trick. No bananas or rice for a few days.

hi, get some parachoc from the chemist it lubricates the bowel to get things moving without irritating the the bowel like a laxative does I used it with my daughter I hope that helps

Try Baby(Gerber Rice cereal, not thick with Gerber Apple Juice mixed in instead of formula or milk for a couple of days, Followed up with a few ounces of warm water. Do this in the morning and see if this makes a different. The constipation is probably do to the iron in the formula

for my daughter i put a little bit of vaselin on her rectum to help it go out.and put her legs bended on her stomach it helps to get the bm out. i fed her grapes without the peel and help her exercise buy olding her hand and making her walk around the house , good luck

Sounds like she isn't getting enough water. At her age should should get at least 2 to 4 cups of water per day. If she is still using a bottle, start that habit of drinking water NOW!!!

Most of us on this planet do NOT get the amount of water our bodies require to function EASILY. For adults that is 8....yes, EIGHT glasses of water every day.

There would be far less illness on planet earth if we would continually drink water and flush our bodies properly each day.

Prune juice is also an excellent way to help her release her bowels and she is old enough to have it. Is she on any medication that would cause constipation? So many drugs these days have that as a side effect.

I had this problem with my daughter, who is now 8, and stills struggles with this problem. We tried prune & pear juice. That did not work. Ultimately I had to do the enema thing and this was something that I used quite a few times. Fleet makes a baby enema. The most important thing is to get her cleaned out. The enema is the fastest way to do so. If you are nursing, I doubt that is the problem, as usually a bowel movement comes not too far after feeding. If she is drinking formula, you might want to switch to an low iron formula. I did that for my daughter and it did wonders. Doctors will say that the iron has nothing to do with it, but they are wrong. I had nurse in my pediatrics office and she was awesome and very realistic. Follow your gut and only use your doctor as a guide. You know what is best for your baby. Good luck & it will all be good. You just have to learn to manage it. Oh, another option (after she is cleaned out), is Miralax. It's a non-habit forming powder you can mix in with whatever she drinks and helps to but water in her stool to make things move easier. My daughter took that for quite awhile.

Either a case of too much iron or not enough water. She may need more room temperature liquids to undo the build-up of thick feces in her intestines. More water based meals like carrot soup, sodium-free consomme, apples, cucumbers and lots of water instead of diluted juices. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

The same thing happened to my daughter at about the same age. A nurse had told me to fill the bath tub with warm shallow water and then add a couple of teaspoons of baking soda. Then put her in there and rt ub her belly with a washcloth, massaging her belly. After I did this, my daughter passed a bowel. I have used this every time since, and my daughter is six years old now. My daughter is the same way, since birth, she is now 3. We have tried everything, it is hard to get kids to eat and drink what you want and when, my suggestion from my own experience would be ask your doc about miralax. It is a powder that you put in with her liquids. It works great, Sometimes it takes a couple days. You can use this everyday. I use it until she goes, then I quit for about 3 days then I use it again everyday until she goes. I have tried all those other things. Liquid colace gave her cramps real bad to the point it scared me so I took her in. They then told me to use the Miralax. That is the best thing yet!!!

I have 5 kids and I actually had 1 who got constipated while he was solely breastfed. He didn't poop for 2 weeks. He was 1 who would regularly go a week between poops. I finally used baby glycerin suppositories. Just have a couple diapers ready.

My little girl doesn't poop on a regular basis. Never has, she is almost 2 1/2 now. Our doc said that as long as she pooped once a week she wasn't constipated. Prune juice, baby food prunes, apple sauce, apple juice... None of it ever worked for her. Our doc checked her out and found that her anal opening is smaller than normal which makes it difficult and painful for her to poop. The doc suggested that we use a q-tip with vaseline on it to help lube her up and help her to pass the poop. It helped and eventually we stopped doing this. This might be something to try. It may help. At least it won't hurt her.

Are you feeding her white rice cereal? That can be constipating. And, yes, by all means, give her baby food prunes.

I have custody of my autistic grandson and like many autistic children he has a problem with constipation.I have read that constipation can be a sign of magnesium deficiency so I give him lots of apple juice and coral calcium which has magnesium in it.I swear by coral calcium and since he has been drinking apple juice and taking this supplement he has not had any trouble with constipation.Be sure to consult a doctor as soon as you can to be certain it is not more.At 8 months she is not able to take coral calcium though so try apple juice to start off with and more fluids.She may be dehydrated which is also a reason for constipation.

Prunes work great as well as any of the "P" foods like pears, peaches, peas, etc. We've used the suppositories as well and never had any problems and they work quite quickly. My son had constipation problems that were so painful that his pedi recommended a teaspoon of milk of magnesia in his milk...helped a ton! With my other two kids, I was able to put a teaspoon of dark karo syrup in their formula and that helped to keep them regular.

They aren't actually called enemas here Kate which is probably where some of the confusion is coming from they are simply called infant glycerin suppositories. Which people are not linking the two together.

Y'all know they may infant enemas, right? Made out of glycerine? The whole enema holds like 1/2 a tsp of liquid total, the tip is tiny, and it's very gentle.

Not like I'm suggesting using an adult enema on a baby.

I agree with others who say no to an enema at that young age, P fruits such as pears, peaches and plums help, room temperature water and juice, if that doesn't work a suppository that is approved for babies. Best of luck.

I keep Colace stool softner on hand for when i know my baby is having problems, it softens what is buildt up and doesnt force it out like a suppositorie,ive used Suppositories on my son i find it forces the hard stool out before allowng it to soften up,so by using stool softner it doesnt make it as tough to go,i only use it as last resort,i try too give him things in his diet to keep him regular to prevent it. Prune juice,or apple juice can help get baby going but if your Team Non-Juice i guess that wont work for you.! Good luck, i know its tough too go through :(

Something I have used for all three of my kids is a powdered supplement for babies you can usually get at a health or natural foods store. It is called bifidus and comes in different combinations. You'll find it in the fridge area as it must stay cold. It can be mixed in with breast milk or whatever your baby drinks, or if your baby is ready to eat it straight, that works too. it's a life-saver for all sorts of tummy issues like gas, constipation, etc. It works quickly and it's not a drug so no side effects.

With a baby that young you need to be careful about enemas as it could perforate the rectum, put too much fluid in the intestines, and make her kidneys act up due to the sodium flooding her system.

Meredith - I never had constipated babies while breast feeding only when one was on formula or cows milk did we ever have that problem. Formulas tend to have excess iron in my opinion, thus hard to breakdown in the stomach as some people have problems with the intrinsic factor not breaking down substances and/or having allergies to foods.

A warm, but not hot as say coffee, cup of water with teaspoon of lemon concentrate put in bottle or cup may help. You might try massaging her tummy gently and a quarter of a suppository not a whole one unless it is for babies, look in baby isle at store and read directions as adult ones whole could possibly be to potent and harm her. Is she cranky or vomiting? If vomiting suggest hospital. Prayers for her!!

Are you breastfeeding? If you are that can be normal. I wouldn't jump to something drastic like an enema for an 8 mos old. I'd see what her doc says, juice always worked for my kids, especially pear.

Feed her foods high in fiber, pears are great too. Also be sure she's drinking plenty of water. That should do it! Good luck!
