Constipation and the Chiropractor

My 2.5 year old has chronic constipation issues. We limit dairy, eat high fiber diet, and she is on Miralax. But I read from a lot of moms that the chiropractor might help as a better fix for the long term – since it seems medications are only fixing it short term. I would like to know more about this.

What exactly does the chiropractor do to help soften the stools? How often do you have to see them? And for how long – till no more meds or Chiropractic visits?

Carolyn, I'm sorry to hear about your friend's situation. It sounds like she wasn't seeing a pediatric chriopractor. My children all see a chiropractor who specializes in children and it helps with their general well-being. Regarding chiro. being good for ear infections, I asked ours about this before because I didn't believe it. She said that, if there is a slight subluxation (sp?) in their neck, it could cause the eustation (sp?) tubes to not drain properly which then results in ear infections.

A good pediatric chiropractor won't promise to cure and/or prevent all childhood ailments. Usually, they state that they help with the general well-being of the child. A healthy spine is a healthy child, as ours says.

DO not let someone mess with your childs not completely developed SPINE. Seriously, the kids backbones have nothing to do with how its intestines work.
I have a close friend in TX with a darling four year old quadriplegic. She thought the baby needed adjustments for of all things, ear infections...the doc snapped her neck...

everything in your body is connected thru nerves... so each bone in the spine connects somewhere... including the bowel sensors... tis weird i know... but when i had my daughter adjusted at 3 months because of constant constipation... well She WENT! :)

The adjustment was free for us... as it was a family friend... but there is also reflexology that works similar... and I started that with my daughter... there are trigger spots in the hands feet... you can get a book at the library...

And Good luck!

Hi Angie,
I am a chiropractor who sees about 50% prenatal and pediatrics, including newborns. Many new babies have constipation issues - you are not alone! I see these sorts of complaints from new moms all the time and I highly recommend that you take your child to be evaluated. In terms of length of time that you will have to see the chiropractor, it really varies depending on the child and their respective issues/history. Please feel free to e-mail me with any further questions: drshailacallaghan@vitahealthclinic.com.

Angie, regarding what a chiropractor will do with your child:

Ours did a manual exam (she wouldn't do x-rays on my youngest 2 because she doesn't believe in exposing children to radiation from x-rays - she did a manual exam of their spinal columns and used an infrared devise, which gave a readout of what areas appear to be inflamed - it's pretty reliable, based on the ones she did for my oldest 2 compared to the x-rays she took.)

Once they pinpoint the areas of subluxation (sp?) in your child's spine, he/she will work with you to devise a treatment plan. 3 of my kids go once a week for an adjustment (which takes about 5 mins. each) and my 4th goes 3 times a week (she has mild sciolosis and our pediatrician actually recommend chiropractic, as my daughter isn't a candidate for bracing or surgery.)

I'm not sure about how well chiropractic works with constipation - I can only imagine it has to do with the nerves that feed into the digestive tract being pressed upon, and chiro. releases the pressure. My kids haven't had problems with constipation.

I'd suggest you ask your pediatrician for a recommendation and research the chiropractors online at www.icpa4kids.com (International Chiropractic Pediatric Association). Also, ask around - friends, other parents at playgroups, etc. and see if anyone recommends a particular doctor.

My mom swear by a homeopathic doctor who is also a chiropractor. I've been to him a few times and he fixes everything from colds to allergies by realigling your spine. It really does work, I know it sounds nuts. I'm looking for a homeopathic doc in our area right now. Only problem is that insurance won't usually cover this sort of doc. Good luck!

Oh, yeah...to try and get her to go...have you tried sitting her in the bath with some baking soda in the water? It helps the muscle back there relax so she can go. A nurse gave me this tip. She also may be holding back some due to discomfort too. My guy did this.

Hi Angie,

My son went through this very situation. His movements were hard as rocks, not kidding and big too for his age. He was on Miralax also. I had tried prunes, high fiber bread, etc. It was not until I cut out dairy and put him on a vitamin regamine that he got better. Then there was no need for Miralax after having been on it for months. You need to cut out dairy all together...even look at ingredients in other foods (casein, caseinate, whey and lactose). The health food store can show you a dairy supplement for her so you can take care of that need. I would keep her off dairy till one it is proven that it made no change (like 1 month). If you have seen a change then that is part of the solution. We put our son on a vitamin regimine....fish oils, multivitamin, liquid multimineral, folnic acid and zinc. It helped him in multiple areas too. Chiropractic visits are good idea because of alignment of the spine and the nerve endings that could be relieved to work naturally. I would try them for 2 months and see if your seeing improvement...if so then continue till you see fit. I hope I have helped. You know your child the best...use your judgement. You'll know when to quit meds and/or chiropractic.

My son had the same issues since 10 weeks after birth until he was 3. He was hospitalized 3 times. We saw a gastroentrologist, limited dairy went to soy. Everything they suggested. At 3 years old our family Dr. suggested sluggish bowel syndrome and to feed him mandrin oranges everyday. He has been regulated since

My daughter also had the same problem. I found that it was related to some vegs from daycare- with eating the same everday- her system just couldn't get everything out. I was told by my doctor that the Chiropractic visits would work but I couldn't find anyone in my area that treated kids. I was also told be one of them that stretching and different exercises would help. She started ballet and we do stretchs like on your back and arch up on your hands and feet.

Hope you find answers!
