Hi there..

Am just wondering if anyone has had Obstetric Cholestasis..

I am 31 weeks pregnant with my second child and can't stop itching!

I've scratched myself so hard (arms, legs and tummy mainly) that i've drawn blood.

Can anyone tell me of their experience with this??

I am seeing a midwife on Tuesday but honestly, I haven't had particularly knowledgeable ones so far so want to get a bit of a background of this condition before the appointment.

Thanks!!

It does happen with pregnancy and sounds like you have it. I had a friend that had it. Your doctor needs to do bloodwork.

I feel so bad for you! Have they checked your full liver panel to make sure that's the only problem right now? If not, request it. There are medications to help with the itching, but I don't think they are pregnancy safe, so it's a grin and bear it right now. Cool baths, cloths, oatmeal baths, trying to rub instead of scratching if you can stand it, should all help. Hydrocortisone cream may help (ask - don't use if you have open sores from anything, even just scratching, and don't use more than 7 days in a row with a break for 7 days).

I haven't had it. It is a disorder (Cholestasis) that can go with my daughter's other diseases. It's caused by increased bile in the system, which is caused by poor liver flow through the ducts. It can be a sign of liver function problems. Hydroxyzine can help with the itching (pregnancy category C) but it will make you very sleepy, too.

Wow, that sounds really uncomfortable!

I've never heard of it, but did itch like crazy while i was pregnant. Mainly my poor old belly gave me trouble.

I moisturised fairly constantly for a while, which seemed to help.

Hope someone else can be more helpful than I am! ;)

Good luck with the next few weeks! :)
