My son had cradle crap really bad for the first year of his life. It would go away and a week later come back. He hit a year old and it never came back after that. But what kept it under control was to rub baby oil on his scalp an hour or so before bathtime then brush it really well with a soft bristled brush. It would keep it under control.

I had actually used a pharmaceutical product at one point because I was so desperate to get rid of it but it didn't work any better and I didn't like the idea of using something like that all the time.

Keep at it and he will outgrow it eventually. In the meantime, keep scrubbing at the oil ring in the bathtub. Ha ha.

My little girl is 7 months now and has it. I have tried baby oil and it kinda worked, didn't take it completely away. Does anyone know how long cradle cap can last?

I would try baby oil with a soft bristle brush. Don't use "ordinary" baby oil, though, because it's mineral oil, and cannot be absorbed into the skin (you really don't want it to be absorbed, either). Mineral oil just sits on the skin and really doesn't do anything - some people say it can even dry out the skin.

When my son was a baby, I used Burt's Bees Apricot baby oil - all natural. I would put it on after a bath, and he would look all "greasy" but within 12 hours it was all absorbed, and his hair was not greasy at all! He never got cradle cap.

Use a soft bristle baby brush with baby oil on it to loosen the cradle cap. Then wash hair out because the oil can clog the poors and thst;s what causes it. M Dr also said .5% cortisone cream

My daughter had this. Her Dr said to use something like a soft toothbrush to remove it then use Head and Shoulders on it in the bath. I actually just gently picked it off with my finger nail while she was eating and then put her in the bath. I only applied a small amount of Head an Sshoulders to a washcloth and used it only on the affected area. It cleared up quickly. Be very careful not to get the head and shoulders in the baby's eyes though.

I'm on my 4th baby, the first had cradle cape before I learned how to prevent it. I've been on LOTS of baby forums and talked to many Ped.s but i've never heard of using astringents (ouch!) And as a hair dresser, I would NOT recomend it for the health of the hair/scalp. I use this stuff for baby and myself called Dermo-nettoyant by Mustella. Most Babies-R-Us carry it. About $15 a bottle (11 on ebay) BUT it lasts me about 2 years!!! It will get baby squeeky clean, evaporate cradle cap and still leave healthy oils. FABULOUS stuff and the best thing is that it's SO non-toxic that you can rub it in your eyes and eat it and it's never irritating. I use it to wash off eye makeup. You might need to put a dab on the problem spot and use a baby brush after letting it sit for a while. Baby oil works the same way but harder to wash off. With my first I used baby oil and picked it off w/ my nails, yukky but it works. -Hope this helps!

Dimpleskins has a product called Cradle Me that is a combination of essential oils and palm oil. It smells great and is all natural. My naturopath suggests putting it on overnight, combing through and then washing. She also suggested Cocount Oil from the pharmacy. My son is almost three and has had this ongoing problem since birth. He has a full head of hair and you can't see it unless you look closely.

Two of my kids get this. If you want a natural remedy (NOT a cure) you can simply but olive oil or salve on it. Let it sit for a while maybe overnight You can either use a brush or simply use your fingernail to scrape off the softend skin off. Chances are your child has more sensitive skin. If you have to use shampoo use a natural mild one like baby Dr. Bronners. You can also just rinse their hair with baking soda rather than using soap. Try not to use anything harsh that can change the ph of their skin. Don't use chemicals or astrigents. Which Hazel is a good alternative to astrengents.

my little girl is 4 and still has a little bit of cradle cap, the only way i have found best to get rid of it is by showering the soap out of her hair rather than using the water from the bath.

When my daughter had cradle cap, her Dr. said to put her baby shampoo on her dry scalp and rub it in with the brush/sponge we got from the hospital. Then let it sit for about 5 minutes. Scrub her head again and rinse. It'll take a couple of tries, but it got rid of most of it pretty quickly!

I tried Herbal Essence Astringent. It started taking it away the same day. My daughter had really bad cradle cap, and I tried almost everything. Seabreeze was suggested to me, but it smelled way too harsh. I had to put it on about once a week for a few weeks, but now she has no problems. Just put some on a cottonball and rub it in.

my son had cc for 4 months, and it only got worse over time, despite the regular baby oil treatments. The only thing that worked for us was to put olive oil on his head and leave it for *several* hours. Wait for it to dry so that the flakes just lift up on their own. Wash his hair that night, and do the olive oil again the next day, exactly the same as the day before. We did this for 3 days, and it was gone and *has not returned*!

I see the post below regarding the shampoo. My son had cc pretty bad. I had to use a medicated shampoo. That worked wonderfully! I just bought the Rite Aid brand medicated shampoo and within a week it was gone and did not come back!

try putting pure vitamin E on his head where it is effected. it worked on my son when he was a baby. bought vitamin e capsules and poked a hole in it to drain out the actual liquid.

I had the same problem and am surprised that no one else has mentioned BI-CARB of SODA, worked very well where the oils had no effect whatsoever. Mix acouple of desert spoons with a few drops of water to make a paste, put on head about 10-15 mins before bath then rub off in bath with water, works well and is VERY gentle on skin (is a skin softener). may need to use a couple of times, best of luck.

I just got rid of my 7month old's cradle cap by putting some olive oil on her head and brushing against it with a fine tooth comb, then I put her in the bath tub and washed it out... I was AMAZED at how quickly and easily it came out.

My son had thick, crusty yellow scales on his head for months! I tried the vaseline, the mineral oil, the Gentle Naturals brand CC treatment, along with the brush technique as recommended by different docs at my pediatricians office.

What finally worked was the Selsun Blue and even our favorite pediatrician (who recommended it) was amazed how well it worked! It's amazing he doesn't have scarring from the scratching he did to the scales, but his head is beautiful and we still use the Selsun Blue every other bath.

Try using a surgical sponge, it's an orange sponge on one side and white soft bristles on the other. It worked on my daughters head. I just put some of her shampoo on the bristle part and gently scrubbed. The bristles are very soft but effective and she looked like she was going to sleep while I scrubbed. Good Luck.

This is the all natural way to do it. Take olive oil (do not use mineral oil - it is really bad for your skin - let alone a babies!) and saturate the affected area. Let it sit for 5 - 10 minutes and then take a fine tooth comb and comb the cradle cap - it comes off super easy and I did the majority of her head in one application!! The key is to let the oil saturate the cradle cap - then it lifts off with out pain or redness! I hope this works.

We had the same problem with both of our children. We used Arbonne natural baby oil (not petroleum based like most oils) and before bed, we put it on her scalp and used a fine-toothed comb to gently deflake the scalp going both directions. Washed her hair in the morning (love Mustella shampoo, too!) and it was pretty much gone. Hope this helps!

My Dr told me to use neutragena T-gel shampoo everyday for 2 weeks for my son's cradel cap and it worked! You only use a dot the size of a pea or smaller and be very careful not to get it in their eyes because it is medicated shampoo but it cleared right up and never returned.

After my first had that, on the second two kids I would brush their head every day with a soft baby brush. If I was bathing them, I did it with soap and while they were in the water. It worked great! They never got a bit of cradle cap! And they would get that look of pure enjoyment every time I did it while they were in the bath. I think this really helps because babies can't itch their head and cradle cap has to really bother them and be itchy! It would drive me crazy to have an itch I couldn't scratch!

Mustela Foaming Shampoo is awesome and cleared it up within a couple of weeks and used it till my daughter's hair was long and needed to use a shampoo and conditioner so it helped with tangles. Definitely a must buy for all new moms, It is available at Babies R Us.

Evening Primrose Oil is sold in capsules at any store. You can even by the generic version of this. If can be applied to the head or squirted in the mouth. Just puncture the capsule and apply.

Since it is believed to be a certain yeast overgrowth, plain yoghurt, left on for 30 minutes and then washed off, seemed the only remedy to work. I used olive oil in conjunction to loosen the scales. When I used only olive oil, it didnt seem to work???

My daughter had cradle cap well into her 2nd year and had a head full of hair. My pediatrician recommended using an adult medicated dandruff shampoo, being careful to keep it out of her eyes. We used it for 2 or 3 shampoos and it did the trick! It was not as messy as most cradle cap remedies and worked like a charm. Keep in mind though, that this was with a toddler and not an infant.

My pediatrician told me to rub in olive oil and then don't shampoo it.

I put the olive oil in, let it soak for about 10 minutes, and then ignored him and shampooed her locks. My poor little girl had greasy, nasty looking hair for a week - and that was with daily shampoos - and still had cradle cap.

My message - don't try olive oil if your baby has hair!!!

I used either generic or name brand Selson Blue - it has to have the 1% selenium sulfide. I was told by my pediatrician that cradle cap is a form of dry skin, similar to dandruff. Shampoo on the scalp, let sit for a few minutes. Then use a very soft hair or toothbrush to brush it through the hair and into the pores. Using every other day should solve the problem pretty quickly!
