My 8 week old son had a gorgous head of hair when born. In the last few days it started falling out in patches on his head. There are no flakes like what cradle cap is described as, but red splotchy areas. His gorgous head of hair now looks horrible. In is not just in one area but all over. Any ideas or suggestions?

My son gets those red spots too. Does it look like rough red skin?? If so, he recommended I buy bacitracin (it's alot like neosporin). This protects the skin and has anti-bacteria stuff in it. I used it on one particularly bad spot on my son's head that had actually cracked open like dry skin does and within 2 days it was practically gone. I tried to keep it always covered...and added more when it rubbed off 3 or more times a day. Works like vaseline and an antibotic protecting his sensitive skin. Should help a lot, and it's an over the counter product! (he also said that if all I had was neosporin, that would work too)

Good luck!

Hair loss can be normal but red blotches are not. It is a reaction to something. I would call the peds. office. What products do you use to wash and lotion him? Also the formual if you use it would be something to consider (allergen?) If nursing, it could be an allergen to something you eat.

I wouldnt worry about the hair losse both my kids lost their first hair when they were a few months old.. my son needed his frist hair cut at 11 months.. my daughter on the other hand was basicly bald till she was 14 months and is now at 21 months getting some length to her hair.. I would have to say if your worried about the red splotchy areas see the dr..

Most babies lose their initial head of hair usually it is gradual, but it does happen. My son had a lot of hair when he was born and slowly that hair fell out and was replaced with the hair he has now. I wouldn't worry about the hair loss, but you may want to have your pediatrician look at the red spotchy areas. A rash on a baby that young should be checked out just to be safe. Hope this helps relieve some on your anxiety. Hope new hair comes in soon :)

My son lost almost all of his hair when he was between 2 and 4 months old. He's 10 months now and it is all back. He was almost completely bald. I don't know about the red splotchy areas though.
