crawling vs walking

My daughter was exactly the same... We all thought she would go straight to walking, but one day she just pushed her self up on all fours and started rocking backwards and forwards and within weeks she was crawling. Baby's do things in their own time, in their own way :)

My son didn't crawl before he walked. He was pulling up and standing with support and started walking at about 10 months. Unless there are other problems or the doctor is not concerned I would not worry too much.

my little guy ( now 15 months and running all over the place) did something like that... he would CRY when we put him on his tummy... but kept trying numerous times a day( put toys around him etc. ) and he eventually was okay with it but would roll over... he also had an exersaucer he loved... he DID crawl and walk and all that... they figure it out in their own time in their own way... just keep trying a few minutes on the floor here and there - persistence pays off with kids ALWAYS :-) ( i have a teenager too... and believe me persistence is a MUST to learn with the kiddos early :-)

if your daughter crawls for a day then starts walking that's ok.. make sure she knows how to crawl for the hand eye coranation(sp?). My grandmother was a teacher and had to teach a child to crawl cause he never did.. and he couldn't read very well either... after he knew how to crawl he read at his grade level plus.

As long as you work with her tp crawl if she starts walking before she crawls there's nothing to worry about..

ask her doctor if it's normal if you need some reassurance.

My son walked early and skipped crawling too. He was a little slow on the climbing skills as an older baby due to weaker back. Doctor said this happens with kids who don't crawl. But he's fine now.

Actually, studies have been linked to kids that skip crawling to kids that are illiterate. They took illiterate grade children a few years back, ones that skipped crawling, made them crawl around, and they started reading. It was like magic. Something in your brain needs that. Lots of things count as crawling... That commando thing some kids do, bouncing on their bottoms around the floor, crawling bent over with just their hands and feet touching the floor, and even rolling across the room counts.



My daughter didn't try crawling till she could sit up. She would be sitting, and she would lean forwards and get into crawl position from there. I've worked at preschools and daycares, and that seems to be the way most start. Can't say I've actually ever seen an infant get into crawl position from their tummy. They normally sit, lean forward into crawl position, bounce a couple of times, fall to their tummies, and roll over. Little arms gotta build strength before they push up to crawling. ;) I wouldn't worry. She'll get there!

My son skipped the crawling and went straight to walking. Let her jump and stand and you can practice walking with her. Sounds like that's what she wants. Not all babies crawl and your daughter may walk early.

Reading other moms' answers I suppose some babies do walk first before they crawl. However, I'm one of Glenn Doman followers, who believes it is better for a child to creep and crawl as much as they can, as it develops cross-coordination, which enhances brain development. It's just a theory, but I'd encourage my baby to crawl first before she walks.

As I said, he was the first in his class to crawl but he was the last in his class to start walking (at 12 months) so early crawling is in no way a precursor for early walking. They all do things in their own time.

My daughter walked just before she turned 9 months old and didn't start crawling until she was 11 months old. She olny learned to crawl because we forced her to so that if she fell in the middle of the room she could get to a piece of furniture to pull herself up again. She is a belly sleeper so it's not that her muscles weren't developed, that was just how she did things (she's never done anything because she was supposed to!), she was just like me. My son didn't crawl until he was 7 or 8 months, but crawling isn't even a developmental milestone, so don't worry about it. Every baby is different.

Lots of kids these days never crawl and go straight to walking. They say it happens more now than it used to because everyone is letting their babies sleep on their backs to avoid SIDS and therefore it takes them longer to develop their neck/back muscles, which they need for crawling (don't worry, they'll develop them eventually anyway). I looked on your profile and see your baby is 6 months. My son was just short of 7 months when he started crawling and he was the first in his class at daycare so you definitely have nothing to worry about. My friend's son never crawled until he started walking at 12 months and in the process of learning to walk, with all the falling over, he learned to crawl. Now he crawls more than he walks, even though he is able to do both.

my 2 and a half year old never crawled properly he dragged himself around everywhere for about 5 months and started walking by 10 months old. She may still crawl yet but even if she walks beofre she crawls dont stress, every child does things differently

My mom said I learned to walk before crawling, so I think its common...my little guy has been crawling now for about a month and is learning to pull himself up on the furniture to get around. He just doesn't want to give me a break to rest...lol!

My daughter was the same way she never wanted to be on her tummy right up until 7 months and then just BAM she was crawling and climbingon everything, she's 11 months tomorrow and is almost walking on her own, and taking her walker everywhere. Every baby is different, I wouldn't be worried.

I have a 29 month old son who used to commando crawl to get around & didn't actually crawl on his knees until after he learned to walk. I also have a 9 month old daughter who can't roll over yet, but has just started to crawl in the last month. She was sitting upright on her own by 5 months, so that's how she wanted to be all the time, she didn't want to be on her back or her tummy, but she's boogeying around now. Try getting right down on the floor with her & put her favourite toy or a mirror just out of her reach to see if that will entice her to start trying to get it, otherwise just give her time & if she starts walking before she crawls than hooray for such a smart girl! Babies all develop at different paces, I would get questions from the health nurse about her milestones when I took her in for immunizations & there were things that she was behind on, sometimes from lack of opportunity, sometimes just because, but she seems to be doing well none the less, believe me, you don't want to rush her anyway, once she starts getting around on her own, checking things out & getting into everything, you'll be wondering why you wanted her to crawl in the first place, lol!

Your little one will be sure to work it out for herself. One day she will really want to get her hands on something and that will be it she'll find away. She will more then likely either crawl or pull herself along on her bum like one of my kids before she walks so she can pull herself up on something.But she'll work it out herself.Goodluck

My 6month old son is still not crawling, he has the same problem with being on his belly, however he has a walker and loves being in it and moving around that way, I personally see no problem with this. It just means that we will have to be more patient with them until they start walking.

some babies dont crawl and thats normal. my nephew crawled for about 2 weeks then ran lol. where my daughter crawled at 4 months and was cruising at 6 1/2 months. every baby is different in what they do.
