If you are concerned, definitely listen to your instincts and take them in. My son had the croup recently. He never had a fever and I would not describe his cough as a seal, but I know that's the "typical" sound. He did wheeze when he coughed though and it was very much in his throat. (He actually had bronchitis too.)

I have no experience with whooping cough.

My son just had the croup a month ago for the first time. If his cough sounds like a seal barking or a high pitched cough he probably has it. My son also ran a temperature anywhere from 101 up to 103.5. Call the doctor, go with your gut instincts, they are usually right. Good luck and hope the kids get better soon!

They sound like a seal barking. May even have difficulty breathing during a fit of coughing b/c the airways become constricted. Usually it's worse at night when they sleep. It's also accompanied be a fever.

Take 'em to the doctor. When my son had it, we were given a dose of steroids to give him before bed so his airways wouldn't close up. (he's 5) It was scary as heck waking up to him having difficulty breathing the first night.

You can help them be more comfortable by using a humidifier.
