My name is Melanie with a long a. My friends shorten it to Lanie. I'm pretty sure my my mom didn't follow any phonics rules on this. I've always liked my name.

Quoting Clare:

I found choosing a name for my daughter more tricky than my son and to be honest it was because we'd given my son such a "normal" name - Joseph and kept thinking we can't possibly give our daughter an "out there" name. However, after much trawling through books my DH and I kept going back to Willow and Willow she is. We love it and are so pleased we stuck with it. We did think in time maybe we'd call her a shorter version like Will or Billie or something but most of the time she's actually Willola as she enjoys Charlie and Lola! She is the only Willow in her nursery class and most people have commented on what a lovely and unusual name it is....... Good luck! x

This name is becoming more popular now. There is quite a few willows where i live but i absolutely love it.

Briony...pronouced Bri-uh-nee. I fell in love with it after watching "Atonement". Maybe it's just the way the British pronouce it, because I told my friend to name her little girl this, but she didn't like the way that I said it. But it is an absolutely beautiful and unique girls name and I think it will become extremely popular in the US in about 10 years.

We named our baby Colette. It is not common but also not weird and we felt like it is very feminine girls name which was important to us. We get complements all the time on her name!

apparently we inadvertently gave our daughter a unique girls name, Skylar... I guess usually SkylEr is a male name but noone I knw has ever seen a SkylAr. What I would suggest is taking a more common girls name and changing up the spelling a lil bit, because sometimes children are creul and anything to strange and she'll be tormented =( Thats what my mom did with mine and everyone has always loved it.

I love the cute, unique girls names Simone and Olivia. Both of which have faded out. My daughter's name is Keni Simone and my goddaughter's name is Cicily. I also loved Gia Simone. Keilyn was my favorite next to Simone but it wasn't until I saw her that I realized I had no clue. We took 5 days to decide. Enjoy looking and don't stress even if she makes it here before you decide. Good luck.

I know at least three little girls with the name Naveah. The thing with unique names is that at some point they become the norm when so many people adopt the trend. For example; I remember when Makayla was a unique name, and now I personally know at least little ten girls with that name.

I wanted a cute unique girls name for my daughter but being from Brazil and my husband English we had to settle in a name that would be pronounce the same in both languages - It is not very original but we love it Sophia Helena. Saying that I do love my name and you can cut it short either, which I think is great - Lara. My fiend just named her baby girl Lana and I think is very original and beautiful. I have actually thought of that but it would be to similar to Lara. Congratulations, anyway. And don't worry when you look at your baby's face you will find just the right name for her! :0)

hi, my daughter is called Arian Mary, it's not pronounced the same as Arianne, it's pronounced A-ree-an. It's welsh and means silver money, she's so precious it just seemed to fit when i found out what it meant, and Mary is after my nanna who passed away when i was only 5, i never picked any other name and when she was born it suited her so much. i got Arian from a novel i was reading when i found i was pregnant. i hope you've picked up some ideas from all the lovely names that everyones posted on here, and i wish you lots of love and happiness with your beautiful baby girl xx

If I ever have a daughter ( not hoping anytime too soon though) I would name her

Kimora Aubrey. My son's name is Khalil Aubrey, trying to start my own tradition.

My name is Havelah (pronounced hah-vah-lah) and is Hebrew. One of it's roots means life. It is also in the bible, spelled Havilah, a land of gold near the garden of Eden. I've always loved having a unique name and all the fun nicknames that come with it.

My Austrailian Cousin just named their baby girl Ariadne (pronounced Airy-AD-Knee) They call her Ari for short. Or you could always go with my name, Kyra (Pronounced K-EAR-A) it's becoming a very popular name. Although spelling it with an "i" may have people pronounce it correctly more often (Kira)...There even used to be a barbie doll named Kira

I also really liked Laurie's idea of not telling anyone till you name her. It sucks being swayed by other people. Then you end up not naming her what YOU want to name her. My firstborn would have been India Karin had he been a girl. (I was single and therefore could name the baby whatever I chose.) 4 boys later I finally had a girl. Wanted to name her Juliette but nooooo....swaying by other people named her Brittany, which is not only a very popular name but thanks to ms. Spears everyone spells Brittany differently.

I'm a fan of names that have some kind of meaning. For example, a favorite place name that means something to you like Arizona, Stowe, Berlin...something cool like that. Also, I wanted to name my second daughter Ocean, because I love the ocean so much (we ended up naming her Ainslee). Family surnames are cool, too for first names (like your maiden name, or go a ways back in history for a cool name). I named my first daughter after one of my favorite songs by Johnny Clegg, the song was "Dela" so we changed the spelling and that is her name. Be creative, make it significant, don't tell anyone until after you've named her, so you don't get swayed by other people's comments. Pick a name that you LOVE!
