Dehydration

My 4 1/2 year old son has had the flu for 56 hours now. He has not vomited since the first night, but continues to have diarrhea. He won't drink Pedialyte, Gatorade, Power Aid. He won't eat popsicles. He hasn't eaten much over the last couple days. He is eating Cheerios right now, but it is the first he has eaten today and it is almost 4:00 p.m. He saw the doctor today. He said that he is not worried if he won't eat -- he won't go to the hospital due to not eating. The issue would be dehydration from not drinking enough fluids. He will drink a little water, but not much. He is a picky eater, which makes it more difficult. But he loves popsicles and chicken noodle soup, but he won't even have that now (last night he only ate 5 spoonsful of soup).

H won't eat Jell-O either. He was drinking some juice yesteday, but the doctor said that juice will make the diarrhea worse. He loves milk, but that is not recommended either.

Any suggestions on how to prevent dehydration.

He was drinking juice, but the doctor said that it would make the diarrhea worse.  I tried ice chips and that didn't work.  He doesn't like ice.  What did help is having him sit on my lap and every few minutes I would make him take a drink while I counted to 10.  He let me do that for a little while.  Luckily he is feeling much better.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I know the pickey eater thing!  Give him a beer see how that works!       No, really the thing Thomas loves is a ice cube.  I tell him hold it and he licks it and thinks he's getting away with something.  Good luck

You could try Italian Ice..... Sit with him and spoon him some. Also crushed ice may work as well. Hope that helps :-)
