Depo-Provera shot

[deleted account] ( 284 moms have responded )

Hi everyone! I am looking information on the Depo-Provera shot. If you have ever used it, did you like it? How bad were the side effects? I'm just trying to decide if it is right for me. I've been reading about it on the internet, but would like some first hand advice. Thanks!

DON'T DO IT! I went from 120 to close to 200lbs... I recommend Mirena. If you search it you'll see negative comments but me personally, I'm completely satisfied with it. So far most people will say you gain weight with depo a plus your monthly friend eventually goes away but so does it with Mirena. Your call, my advice...

It has been a long time since I took it, about 15 years, but my experience was horrible. The shot made it so I had no period at all for 4 months and then I bled for almost 21 days. I actually had to be treated for annemia while I was bleeding so much. Sounds good, but it did not work for me.

I had Depo shots for several years and thought it was wonderful. No periods, no weight gain, no problems. However after 6 years of it, I went through an emotional rough patch, nothing major but I was a bit depressed. Tried counseling etc but it was getting worse and after 6 months I was in a bad way. Went to my GP who immediately cancelled my Depo prescription, and then put me on an anti-depressant for 12 months.

though I knew I didnt need them after 4 months and had stopped them by 6 months. It is a known side effect (though perhaps not the most common or well-known).

Hated it! Bled non-stop and went completely crazy, even violent. Everyone is different, but I would never recommend it to anyone. I know several people who've tried it, and only one person had a positive experience using it.

Hey I was on it for about a year to more or less use to turn off cycle... I had not cycle for the time, did not have any other side effect ... other then you can not do any kind of like diet pill... That is if your using it to prevent you from getting pregnant.... cause I was taking herbal life and it effect the hormones in your body... have a 8 yr old to prove that.. but per everything all persons are different it is a 3month shot... try it once if you want have also done the ring and the patch... ring is nice but only if you have not issue with inserting it kind of like a diaphragm ... also have done the patch... great for a normal person... as long as your not a oil bath person.. will remove it from your skin and is not usable again.

Hey!! I have been on the shot for 8 years. I have missed a shot twice and got pregnant but ended up having a miscarriage. I wasn't sad because prior to that I was on the shot for 5 years and was wondering if I were to ever get pregnant again for being on the shot for so long. Personally, I haven't had any complications at all. I LOVE the fact that I don't have to worry about that time of the month. The only bad side effect I have heard of persnally was two girls gaining weight from the shot. How, I don't understand that one. I haven't gain or lost with it. I haven't had no problems at all. Luckily with you already have a child, the doctor did tell me it is not good to be on birth control for more than four years straight and not have any kids. I wasn't a pill taker so that's why I stop taking the pill. I don't think the patch and I would have gotten along. I was terrified of the Nuva Ring. Now the Nuroplants(?), I have heard were ok only if you were not planning to have any kid for 5 years because that's how long it stays in. Either way still weigh your options and ask your doctor for more options to choose from.

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend the Depo shot. After delivering my 3rd child in 2 1/2 years, my midwife said my uterus couldn't handle a 4th pregnancy in a row. I went on Depo, knowing that I would never be able to remember pills every night. I went from feeling better than ever at my 6 week checkup, to only sleeping 2-3 hours a night, being very irritable (totally out of character for me), hemorraged for 4 months, even had to go on anti-depressants. My doctor explained that something in the Depo depleted the 5HTP, which depleted the serotonin, which kept me from sleeping. It took me over 2 years to sleep normally without the help of a serotonin supplement. I have spoken to friends about it since and found out they were very angry/irritable people while on Depo. I'm sure others have not necessarily had the extreme symptoms I did, but highly caution others against using it.

Ive been on it for about 3 yrs. I found that i have no side effects except for no menstrual cycle, which is awesome...i suppose. So far, so good. but i read there was a 10lbs gain every 2 yrs. I work out and eat healthy so im not that worried. The cost is about $15 and my family doctor applies it every 3 months.

I have had friends who have been on Depo and they describe it as having a premature Menopause at the age of 20. They also tried to have a baby after stopping the depo injections and they are having a lot of difficulties. We all find Impalnon so much better and was more reliable.

Depo is a very controversial contraceptive measure utilized for a variety of situations. Depending what you are interested in using it for--will be your determining factors. The emperical support for its' effectiveness for birth control is outstanding. However, weight gain has been problematic for many. In my experiences, significant blood clots and migraines appeared and caused significan discomfort (after 5+ years of use). Otherwise, it was great not experiencing a monthly cycle and having all of the negative effects of a cycle.

Hi there. I have been on the shot for 3 yrs now. I have not suffered any side effects from it except for soreness at the injection site. I love the shot. I have not had a period for 3 yrs either. I still get the chocalte cravings and a little cramp when I would have my period every once in a while. I would suggest it.

I was on it for 7 years, although that was several years ago. I had no problems, no weight gain and absolutely no periods. I did have PMS pretty bad about 2 weeks before time for my shots. When I came off of it, I had periods every 2 weeks for a couple of months and had to go on birth control pills for a couple of months to get my cycle back on track.

I can think of nothing worse! When I was on it, I also gained weight and also had massive mood swings. The injection itself was ok, but I remember doing nothing but bleeding for the first few weeks, and then when I did get to the end of the 3 months I remember getting 3 periods within the next 6 weeks..............so no, didn't like it, especially the weight gain. They say if you stick it through for the next injection, then the symptoms sort themselves out........good luck with whatever you decide, but also remember that when they initially tested this drug, it caused tumors in beagle dogs. I also had that in the back of my mind whilst on it too....I know we're not dogs, but you never know!

I took it for 2yrs. I did not have a period, which for me was good as I did not have a return of fibroid tumors. I did gain a little weight but for me it was worth it. Everyone's body and makeup are different, and you will hear many different storys. Basically I liked it.

I was on it years ago and I really had no problems I really didn't have any periods about 2x a year I didn't gain no weight I was about 150-160 at the heaviest. I was on it for afew years almost 4years than I stop taken it, I got pregnant a year almost a year later but lost the child, the dr. told me since I was on it for awhile that I should wait about year to have a baby to make sure the medicine is out of my system. Now I wish I would of got back on it because me and my husband want more children and I can't have any more. I got my tubes cut, burn, clip. and the dr. cut too much, and can't be reattach. So only God can get us pregnant that will be my miracle, can't wait. But anyways you need to really think about what protection your going to take. Every body is different. Whatever your choice is ask the Lord to help you make the right choice. Jesus answer prayers from a true and sincere heart that's if you really want his opinion. God Bless......

I took the Depo shot for years and really liked it. It is convenient because you don't risk forgetting to take a pill. The down side for me was that my period would start sometimes 3 weeks before my next shot was scheduled, sometimes a week before, but never the same. The only reason I stopped getting the shot was because my doctor said it takes 18 months to get out of your system and I knew I wanted to have another child before that long of a time.

I gained 15lbs while on Depo. Quite sure it was because of the shot. I was working out 5-6 times a week and it still packed on the lbs! Other than that, it kept me from being pregos...so i guess you could say it was effective!

I had no problems with it other than the weight gain, but after my body got used to it and I got into a consistent routine with working out and eating better, I found that since it regulates your hormones it was relatively easy to lose weight. There is an initial weight gain when taking it, but that side effect can be countered, just as I mentioned. I never had any problems going off of it and am actually considering using it again. Oh and remember, as with any medication, the side effects will differ from person to person.

I went on Depo after my daughter was born, and noticed very few side-effects. I didn't even get any spotting, and the loss of my periods was a huge relief because they were hideous before I got pregnant. Because women's physiology is so very varied, all you can really do is shop around until you find a method that works for you. So far the Pill has failed me (my daughter is almost five), and Depo has failed me (the new baby is due at the end of next month). I'm going to try an implant next, and if that doesn't work I'll be considering an IUD or getting my tubes tied!

I've been taking it for about 2 yrs now, the pro (for me) is not getting my period since I suffer from migraines the day before I menstruate, The cons is that my insurance doesn't cover it and you lose bone density if you take it for a long period of time. I take a calcium supplement with vit. D to decrease my risk. I havn't had any side effect from it.

Hi, one of my sisters and my sister-in-law had the shot and had massive lumps come up underneath their skin on their backs, they were similar to cysts, they were only on it a few months and stopped it, and when they told the doctor he just said "no-one has ever told him that's happened to them before" but didn't go on to document their two cases, they also put on a fair bit of weight which was hard for them to lose. My other sister has had the shot for many years due to the fact she has a gene malformation so is not allowed to have children, she has never had any side effects except gaining weight but that's under control now. The shot does stop your periods and if you are on it for a long length of time it can take up to 2 years before you can fall pregnant, if you were contemplating having children again keep this mind. Also, when my sister and sister-in-law stopped the shot, they experienced some sort of build up of lining or something come away (down there, if you know what I mean), they said it was like chunks of skin, from inside (sorry, but that's the only way I can describe what they told me exactly). I have never had it myself and would never ever have it after seeing what they went through, it would've been just my luck that I had heaps of problems like them also.

Hi Julie - I was on the depo shots for several years without suffering any side effects at all whilst on it.

My biggest disappoinment though was that it took me nearly 18 months to fall pregnant with my daughter (born dec 08) after stopping the injections.

I understand that it can take a while to fall pregnant no matter what contraceptive you have been using... but the fact that it only took having sex 3 times to get pregnant this time tells me that it really did take 18 months for the depo to get out of my system to fall pregnant the first time.

At first there was constant spotting. Always having to wear a panty liner. I took 2 shots. Then after stopping, I didn't have a period for about a year.

I did gain weight on this and was moody. Not sure if this was attributed to the shot or the immense stress I was under at the same time.

I now just take Loestrin everyday. Don't feel any side effects and able to lose weight while on this.

The problem with depo is if you have a bad reaction you are stuck with it until the drug leaves your body and the effects can last longer than 3 months.

I was put on depo to help with endometriosis. I bled constantly!..... 41 days straight then a few days with no bleeding then 21 days straight a couple of days with no bleeding then bled again and kept having constant bleeding after the 3 months were up. My moods were hideous...felt suicidal, vommited a lot, bloated and cramping. When I was first diagnosed with endo I was in stage 1 .....about 6 - 8 months later I was in stage 4........I believe that the depo sent my hormones crazy and sped up the process of the endo spreading. I would look at something else that can be removed or stopped incase of bad side effects! Took me 3 years to concieve after first taking it.

Good Luck!

It has been 30 years since I took it so things could be a lot different now but the only warning I have for you is what I had wished my doctor had told me. I found it messed with my moods in very strong ways, I felt like a crazy person while I was on it and did not know it was from the drug. Didn't help that I was so frustrated with my medical issues at the time so I thought it was all me but it was definitely caused by that drug cause the 'crazies' went away once I was off it, had never been like that before or since!. Been told since then that this happens to be a side effect but I felt it was made to seem like it was light - it was NOT light for me. So beware of that side effect in case.

I cannot say enough BAD things about this BC. I had minor complications (mood swings, weight gain and migraines). My sister has been on it for 10 years- she has significant bone loss and the doctors pulled her off it. At one point this BC was on the list to be pulled by the FDA- for some unknown reason it remains. It is a serious health risk as far as I'm concerned.

Hi, I've used the depo shot for birth control. First, it added about 3-5 lbs of weight for every shot I received. Second, I had more migraine headaches during the depo shots. I will never get a depo shot again for those two reasons. However, it affects everyone different. I have an IUD now and love it. Good luck!

I started using the depo again 5 years ago...again, I had no side effects except...no period...I would hardly call that a side effect :~) I know some people have experienced severe weight gain with the depo, I know several people that use it and none have had the weight gain experience.

I didn't like the depo-I had an adverse reaction to the hormones used; it caused 30+ pounds of weight gain, and aggravated my bi-polar condtiion. I have the mirena IUD and LOVE it! I had reactions to the pills and all other forms of "hormone therapy" birth control as well though.
