Diarrhea for 2 weeks, but doesn't seem sick?!

My 5 month old son has had diarrhea for 2 weeks! He's tested negative for rotavirus, what else could be causing this? He's not dehydrated, has a great appetite, and is still putting on weight. He is perfectly happy, seems to feel great but he has diarrhea 2-6 times a day. I've tried giving him bananas and rice cereal, per doctor's instructions to firm things up, but all that does is make the poop a darker color. Does anyone out there have any ideas what could be causing this? The only things he's ever eaten are formula, rice & oatmeal cereal (lots of times), peas(twice), sweet potatoes(once), and bananas(not until after this started). No allergies or illnesses of any kind run in our family.

My 5 month old started having issues right after I stopped BF him and switched to straight formula. We went through 4 different kind, gentle ease, prosobee, nutramagin and now on neocate. He started 5 weeks ago having BMs 5-8 times a day, a big change from the once every 2 days while BF'ing, he had traces of blood in his stool so I freaked and called his pediatrician. They have ran every fecal test and all came back negative. His blood work showed a high WBC and EOS, meaning he was fighting something, more than likely an allergy to proteins which is why they switched him to Neocate. We have been on it a week with no change, still going 10-12 times a day, mostly watery with traces of blood. He isn't dehydrated and acts happy for the most part which is the most frustrating part. His dad and I are a mess because as you can imagine going 10-12 times a day leaves little time to sleep. We have another appt next week to go over a scope procedure which I hope can tell us what is causing this. Has anyone dealt with this???

My daughter is 16 months and suddenly has had diarrhea for a week now. She has no change of diet I have noticed that I limit her milk intake it's not as often during the day so I tried lactaid milk and it doesn't help. She won't go to sleep at night without milk and she blows her diaper up within a hour maybe two and soils her clothes. I am tired I've been thru so many diapers. What should I try next soy milk ?

My baby is 7 month old and having diarrhea for five days now. We took her to a children's walk in clinic and the doctor adviced to stop her milk for 24 hours and have her on Pedialite to avoid dehydration or ginger ale for stomach pain for the next 12 hours and then start feeding her bananas, rice, pasta or apple sauce only plus pedialite for the next 12 hours again before she goes back to her milk. We tried this, everything seemed well within 12 hours until she woke up at 1 this morning crying and so i fed her milk. Right after she finished her milk, she had two sessions of really soft and a little watery stool with the same funky smell she's had before. Anyone experienced something like this? I'm going to take her to her pedia later this morning.

I can definitely feel the pain you are having. We had the same problem, it lasted 12 days and stopped after we started to fed her banana.

Check to see if your baby is lactose intolerance. My baby had diarrhea 5~8 times a day for the first month, it stopped right after we change to formula to similac soy. Then we had the problem again when she was 5 month old. It went away after 12 days. We still don't know what caused that and why it stopped. Our guessing is that we fed her banana which made it stopped, maybe it's just a co-instance. Check if your baby is lactose intolerance, if not, no harm to try banana. Don't worry, as long as he is not dehydrated, he will be fine and it will go away...

Some possible causes of diarrhea that should be checked (Rita) -
1 - allergies
2 - fluid intake
3 - duodenum enzyme levels (checked with EGD scope with biopsies)
4 - pancreatic insufficiency (checked with fecal fat test, but is only positive when

A childrens (infants) pro-biotic works awesome, if there are no causes found (you can buy it at Wal-Mart). I have had to use it for my son, when he was under a year and it made his poop perfect! Ask your doctor about it, too.

Please get your doctor to test for allergies!!
My son had runny green diarrehea since he was 10 days old it took us so long for anyone to do anything about it and he got SO sick we ended up in hospital when he was 6 weeks until he was 3 months, they finally worked out it a suspected milk protein intollerance. he is getting skin allergy tested this month.
Please get your lil one tested :)

My son had 8 months of diarrhea intermittently when he was an infant and all of those tests came back fine. Finally they sent him to a gastrointestinal specialist and he has an endoscopy done and they found that it was lactose intolerance. It was weird. I found out through the process that it is partially hereditary. The doctor might want to give it more time but it is definately something to investigate.

Give him soy milk and lactos free cheese. If that's not it, it sounds like a food aleirge. Give him just one or two things at a time for two weeks tell you find out what it is. When you start your baby on food they tell you first do veggies. Give your baby the same kind for 2 weeks, then another tell you've given them every kind. Then move on to fruit. Try to do something like that.

I've thought about lactose intolerence, but can that just happen suddenly? He's eating the same formula as always.

He may have developed an allergy to the milk-based formula, despite no allergies in the family. Bananas and rice are very rare allergies and not likely, but also possible.

Hi, has your dr considered lactose intolerance? My baby has similar symptoms and tested negative to viruses too, so are now looking at lactose intolerance as the problem.
