I had my daughter Oct 2009 and had an amniotic fluid embolism. In a very short explanation its where the fluid that the baby sits in gets into your blood stream poisoning you. I'm really scared of it happening again even though they tell me the odds are 1 in 80,000 of it happening just once so the chances of it happening twice is near impossible. I'm scared.

Very rarely, a volume of amniotic fluid—the fluid that surrounds the fetus in the uterus—enters the woman's bloodstream, usually during a particularly difficult labor. The fluid travels to the woman's lungs and may cause the arteries in the lungs to constrict. This constriction may result in a rapid heart rate, irregular heart rhythm, collapse, shock, or even cardiac arrest and death. Widespread blood clotting (disseminated intravascular coagulation) is a common complication, requiring emergency care. Most deaths occur within 5 hours of event. 25% of survivors are neurologically intact. Incidence, mortality 1:80,000.
Ava (my baby) came back not having anything wrong with her at all, they would keep the IV in her head for a few more days to be sure she was going to be okay.
I was able to go home a week later, Oct 17th. But I had to have whats called a midline put into my right arm. This is a tube about 8 inches long going into my vain with all of the equipment attached to my arm so I could receive IV injections each day for the following 2 weeks at my house. On top of taking 12 pills a day. They say I'm lucky to be alive. They had kept me in labor for 32hrs and I wouldn't dialate past 3 so they did a c-section and that is what saved my life even though they didnt find any of this out until 2 days later.
