I am a first generation American. My Dad spoke English to me and Mommy spoke Spanish to me. By the time I was six years old, I was reading and writing AND speaking BOTH languages. Having a second language, regardless of the origin, opens more opportunities for us.
And it is unfair for business to want bilingual people to work for them, BUT they are trying to reach a large target of Hispanics, especially in larger cities and in the Border. Up in the Canandian bordering states, French is the preferred language for businesses to hire bilinguals, so it is NOT just spanish.
As far as illegals, Paperwork only became mandatory in the last 60 years! When we began to get a large influx of people from Central and South America. THe USA is not the only country struggling with unauthorized immigration. And for the record, my parents BOTH came to this country with the proper documentation and NEVER were on Welfare or got a handout.
Para Elia, cualquier cosa que quieras platicar, tendras muchas Mami's que te pueden ayudar, incluyendo yo!

Well, I can say a few words. I've tried to pick up as much as I can because I work for a non-profit organization (in the US) and we see many Spanish speaking families. Our organization is unable to afford ANY type of interpretors, for other languages or hearing impaired. We just don't have the money! We provide dental services, which is NOT cheap. The funds we do receive are mainly for sevices and supplies. So, all I ask is if we can help you, please meet us halfway and bring someone with you. Thanks! :-)

Well, all I can say, that in Calif. ILLEGALS are given many Freebies that Legal Citizens are denied. ILLEGALS(why is this not treated as such??) demand Free College,Free Medical, etc. This makes many Americans, and those who stood in line to receive their Citizenship the Legal Way upset and angry. True,I would not be able to pick the Fruits and Veggies that some do to provide for their Families here and abroad. Again, all ILLEGALS are not from Mexico. I think it is good Brain Exercise to learn another Language. Too bad some Companies will not hire someone if they do not speak Spanish, and that upsets English speaking Americans, who feel; "In America,WE Speak English". There is ongoing debates on this touchy subject, but we all need to ............... What more can I say???? There are over 12 Million ILLEGALS in the USA,some wonderful potential Citizens, some undesired. But,then, that is just Human Nature!!!!

Sometimes I am amazed at the ignorance of people. Yes, English is the first language of the U.S., but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't or don't need to speak another language. I am married to a Colombian who became a citizen of the U.S ten years ago. We speak both languages in our home and I teach Spanish as well as interpret for doctors. I have studied several languages and not only is it good for your brain, but it has opened so many doors and given me so many opportunities. Why would anyway say such hateful things to a simple question like do you speak Spanish?

I am learning Spanish and attempting to teach it to my children. :-) I think its a great way to encourage their development and will be beneficial to them in the future. I'm guessing that if Daddy spoke it (he is Dominican) they would learn quicker.

Helen, get a life.
Elia, I wish I did speak Spanish. My husband is Mexican, so he is fluent. My FIL speaks very little English, and I wish I could have a full conversation with him. The reason I came to this thread in the first place, you never know when someone needs help. So if you needed translation, I was going to offer up my husband. Now I see you are just looking for people to chat with in Spanish, and I am so glad many people in here do. This will make CoM and easier place for you to make friends.

Wow!!! I just read some of the replies here. So sorry if that question irritated someone. We live in a Melting Pot of Cultures, and some are offended at the fact that,in some cases, Illegals in the USA take precedence over the Citizens. Maybe that aroused that Lady's ire. It is a touchy subject, especially in those areas. But,not all Illegals are from Mexico. My Son chose Spanish and is using that in his job as a Manager. Keep the comments coming!!!! HUGS!!!

I took 3 years in High School. Why was this question posted???? I think it is good for children to learn a second language. My Son took 4 years of Spanish in High School, and is married to a Chinese woman. They are teaching their children Mandarin(which he also took a class in) and Cantonese. My daughter speaks German and is teaching her sons the same.

Good point Holly and Amy. This is a world wide website. Not just for Americans.
No one said you had to speak Spanish or had to learn Spanish, Helen. This woman was just asking if anyone DOES speak Spanish. You don't and that's your choice and there isn't anything in the world wrong with that, but the way you responded was completely rude and uncalled for.
Holly - posted on 11/15/2012
oh wow, helen, this question was not asking you specifically speak spanish, but asking EVERYONE HERE if they speak spanish and dove was not being rude, but merely explaining that people in the US do speak spanish... nobody was attacking you or your choice

What crawled up your butt and died Helen? That was completely rude and uncalled for. I know a lot of Americans who don't have a drop of Mexican/Spanish/whatever blood and speak Spanish quite fluently.

I understand that you asked Little Miss if she speaks Spanish, but my Spanish knowledge is extremely minimal. I got an A in first year Spanish, but haven't used it in about 17 years....
Do you have a problem and have limited English? Or are you wondering if any of us speak Spanish just for the fun of it?
