Does anybody else have problems with 7 year-olds trying to learn times tables?

My 7 year old has been having problems remembering times tables for longer than a few days. We spend hours learning them, he passes the tests, gets good marks and then forgets them immediately. The same happened with my 11 year old daughter at that age. May be 7-8 year-olds should not be asked to learn times tables by heart??

Did you try the dvd Multiplication Rock by School House Rocks they are a fun way to learn. I still remember the songs and I'm 50. In NY my children had mad minutes where they had to add or subtract 30 problems in one minute and my daughter had a learning disability and that was a nightmare. But for some reaon she could do the time tables. You can find these DVD at Target. Good luck. Wait until they start to do money and coins.

I was learning them by second grade. They way my mom taught me me to do it was a rather easy way that I still use to this day. If the problem is 7 times 3 get him to start with 7 then add another 7...then yet another 7 TAAADAAAAA he now has the answer!!!!!!!! Hope this works for you hun.

Yes and at 9 it's still not easy; try putting a poster of the tables in the bathroom when she's brushing her teeth or in her bedroom. Flash cards played like a memory game and singing the times tables with a catchy melody helps too. It's really about repetition: a little every day, repeat, repeat, repeat. Good luck!

In my opinion it is too young for them to try to memorize them. And I have found with my daugher, she is 6, that if you do fun things while learning them, they memorize them better. Like hop scotch but with times tables... something where they get to move A LOT! lol But yes I have problems with my daughter learning them too. If you ask their teacher, they will surely tell you it is normal for that age.
