Does anybody have any tips for potty training an Autistic child??

My step son is 4 years old and is mildly Autistic. He does not speak yet, he can say words but rarely in context, he mostly repeats what he hears. He will potty in the big potty if we prompt him but he cannot tell us when he has to go. He goes willingly though if we say it's time to go potty. He will hide to poop and doesn't like it on him, which gets really gross if we don't catch it right away. We often have dry pull ups when we take him potty. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there a good way to get him to let us know when he has to go? Rewards don't work because he doesn't understand the concept. I think he is ready , the verbal ability and comprehension just isn't there for him. I would appreciate any advice I can get.

he sounds a lot like my nephew.

my brother and sister in law never pushed the idea on him. b/c at the age of 4 they obviously notice the potty, that people use it,and they even try to persuade him to use the potty...but he just didnt want to!

at the age of 5 he all of the sudden decided he would start using the potty, and hes been great ever since!

i think its really just a switch that gets turned on in their head.

i wish i had some great advice,but im sorry i dont :-/

good luck!

Hi Jenny,

Have you tried pictures or using a picture schedule like a social story? This could help it could show him what to do and you could even get a picture for him to let you know when he has to go. Pictures are a great way to teach Autistic children how to do anything especially when it comes to self help skills. I could help you with this if you would like. I work with an Autistic child and have a special needs son of my own, who is now 17.
