Does anyone else have a child with Chronic Hives?

I was researching chronic hives and came across this post. My 23 month old son has had chronic hives for the last 4 months. I am beside myself having to medicate him every day with hydroxyzine. This is his second "round" of hives. The first round started when he was 8 months old and that lasted 3 1/2 months. We have exhausted all our options and he has had extensive blood work done- not even our local labs, but certain tests were so specific they were sent to labs in California, Kansas, and Minessota. They even somehow tested to see if it was autoimmune- Everything came back normal! I feel so helpless and not sure what to do at this point. I guess I am just seeking solace from moms who are in the same boat. His hives are somewhat present even with the hydroxyzine everyday, but if I skip just 1 dose, he is covered in welts. I would love to hear updates on everyone's kids- what worked, what didn't? Thank you!

My son started getting hives at age 2 1/2. He is 5 now. It has been controlled very well since from hydroxyzine. I've heard this worked for alot of people and it isn't bad for the body like alot of those other drugs out there. Good luck!

My 14 year old daughter has had chronic hives and swelling for 5 months now. We have tried all of the allergy medications. Nothing seemed to work. On the advice of friends we tried a chiropractor with experience in massage and improving the diet. He put her on a gluten and dairy free diet. It has been a long process, but I can see improvement. She is not hive free yet, but it is continuing to improve. This might be an option for you to try easily.

Yes they did. She's been on 3 differend ones & on Prednisone twice..first the liquid form then the pill form, all which have done nothing for her. So I took her off all of them. The 1st Allergist she had been too I was not pleased with, she didn't seem that concerned then did not want to order bloodwork/do further testing. She was hoping that after the 1st 12 weeks they'd be gone so she could say it was from a "viral infection" as My infant son was in the hospital with RSV the same day she 1st broke out in hives. But it's been 6 Months now & she still has them! So I finally got her into a different Allergist whom I am very pleased with. He explained things way better then she did & stuff that she never even had brought up. He thinks its internal, not an actual allergy. He ordered more bloodwork(the poor girl has had to go about 4 times now for bloodwork), we're just waiting on the results now. He also put her on a different Antihistamine, so we'll see if that actually works. She's had swollen lips 4 times now, and now her eyes have been swelling up as well. Her 1 eye was closed shut all day yesterday & is just now starting to go down in swelling. She also started having her lower/private area swell. Very odd. Hopefully we get some answers. She's only 3 1/2, and it's very hard on her(and me). She's constantly itching & crying because it's so irritating

Here are some natural ways to treat it: Take a high dose of Vitamin D (use d2), this is the nutrient the skin absorbs through sun light, dosage should be left to the individual, but as a hint I use quite a high dose.

Reduce swelling by using cold packs or ice packs ( if their straight out of the freezer wrap them in a towel before you place on skin.

Calamine lotion applied to the area will help some, this tends to be more affective for the smaller more common hives, mine tend to be the rings and deeper swelling so calamine doesn't work that great for me.

Cats Claw (not a real cat's claw), actually it's a herb or root or something?, anyway you can get it in supplement form, & it does reduce the swelling or at least speeds everything up.

Herbal teas can be good, even if you just use them instead of your normal tea or coffee when your experiencing an attack of urticaria. I believe the reason is because they contain natural antioxidants. Green tea is also used to reduce swelling (inflammation)

Vitamin C is often referred to as offering relief to urticaria sufferers, I cant be sure if that's the case but I take it anyway as it can only be a good thing.

Aloe Vera gel, Peanut or Vitamin E oils are also widely used to offer some relief, if my memory serves me, your supposed to apply your chosen liquid twice daily.

Keeping a diet sheet is something you should consider, although this isn't technically a hives remedy it can help you distinguish specific allergens which may be the cause of of trigger of your chronic urticaria. Just keep a list of the food and drink you consume over a period which might end at an episode, then you can check back and see which items might be at fault. Try cutting one thing at a time to see if it helps and reduces the frequency of urticaria attacks.
