my son had really bad eczema just on his face from about three months old, we later found out he allergic to milk products but we used sigma hydrocortisone 1 % cream (if you do use this only use areally little bit) and QV bath wash and QV cream for after the bath. Water actually drys out the skin thats really bad for eczema. my son is 20 months now and you wouldn't even know he had eczema we have just stop going to see special doctors.

Forgot to add - dress your child in all natural, all cotton fabrics. No poly or poly blends. They can irritate the skin and add to the problem.

Ok, my son has eczema too, and lotions alone do not work. His eczema is caused by allergies (he has food and environmental). We control the food allergies, so it must be environmental. I was lucky enough to get my son in a Duke Allergy study, and this is what they recommended for my son:
Cerave Cream (found in Walgreens and CVS), 2 times a day - one after a 20 minute bath. He also has a steroid cream we put on him 1 time a day - after the bath - and only on his hot spots. You have to bathe him/her daily to add the moisture back into the skin that alone their skin can't hold. Once you bathe, you have 3 minutes to pat dry and apply the lotion to hold in the moisture the skin just absorbed. Unless s/he is dirty, you don't have to use any soap or shampoo except a couple times a week - they just need the water.
I recommend you getting your child tested for allergies and have him/her put on a daily antihistamine. Duke put my son on hydroxyzine. It is an older kind and milder to the toddler than Zyrtec or something like that. Anyway, we found we had to remove the carpet in our house, etc, because even though he didn't test positive for dust or whatever, we noticed he flares up with chemicals and carpet fibers. So pay attention to the environment too, they can flare up to things that aren't normally allergy tested.
Whenever my son goes into a round of allergy testing, he has to be off his antihistamine for 5 days, and his eczema really flairs up badly - so I know we are controlling it with the meds and the lotions, but I also know that lotion alone won't work. He looks great when we are following our routine.

Aquaphor ointment!! It does stain certain colors, but if you put it on before bed it will jsut be their pajamas that get stained. I also use Eucerin's baby wash. It's soap free and fragrance free so it tends to not dry out his skin as bad. Only give a bath every couple of days in teh winter (they're not as dirty) I try to use items that do not contain too many chemicals and these are listed as ok, (not perfect) but they actaully work

Both of my children have eczema. Aquaphor works on specific patches however it is like vaseline. For a lotion and body wash I use "Gentle Naturals" by Johnson & Johnson (sold at Target in a teal-green bottles). They have Winnie the pooh characters on them. It has helped soooo much. We have tried everything on my 3 year old including Aveeno, Burts Bees, Eucerin, Cetaphil, Neutrogena, prescriptions, etc... The Gentle Naturals was given to us as a present and if I would have known about it before, I would have been using it for the last three years!!!

As a dermatologist.... I recommend gentle, fragrance free soaps like Cetaphil liquid cleanser, and frequent use (at least daily) of bland emollients like Aquaphor, and vanicream (creams not lotions). Also, CeraVe cream is excellent. Be sure to put on while your child's skin is still slightly damp after bathing to lock in moisture.

We have a tried a ton of lotions. Here's what works the best (over the counter) for us. Cetaphil Daily Advance Ultra Hydrating Lotion for Dry, Sensitive Skin; CeraVe also works pretty well.
We also use sensitive skin Dove body wash, and Aveeno w/Oatmeal body was in the tub.
Lotions that don't work: Lubriderm, Eucerin, Aveeno.

Hi! My doctor recommended a brand called Galaxal Base - I got it at Costco. It is a really thick cream that is not greasy and it works wonders for really dry skin and execma. My 4 year old has dry skin and my 4 month old and it works well on both - unscented!!! Good luck!

Cetaphil was advised to us by a dermatologist and has worked great for us. But the biggest difference was cutting bathing down to a few times a week and using soap at the end of the bath, then rinsing off with soap-free water at the end of the bath.

My 11 month old has mild eczema, I was told to bathe him in QV oil and wash him in this as well, it really helps. My doctor also has given me sigmacort 1% on the really red areas and apply Eucerin at night. This really works!

My pediatrician recommended Aquaphor for my son. But I found that the combination of the bath and lotion made by Aveeno for babies worked the best. The poor thing was covered and couldn't sleep because he was so itchy. It's worked wonders for us.

Anything they are not sensitive to, never soap, even natural soap if they are broken out. Cetaphil is a cleanser that can be used like a soap but if left on and it will moisturize the skin. Sensitivity can change with age, seasons and stress level with different products. The thicker the product the more it is protecting the skin from air contaminants. Plain old Vaseline or zinc ointment might do just fine. Had eczema all my life, tried it all.

When my daughter was a toddler she had it pretty bad. Our doctor said to bathe her in Dove soap only. She has used it forever and not had any "spots" since. I think we also used Eucerin lotion at the time. My sister's little boy just went to the doctor bc of his skin and he also recommended Dove soap. Hope this helps!!

Hey, I used Weleda's Calendula Baby Cream (not the diaper cream... the calendula comes in a yellow tube) on my son's eczema when it flares up... It worked like a charm and worked better than prescription stuff we tried. You can get it at most health food stores; I know Whole Foods carries it. I also use it when I go skiing for super-chapped skin, too. I love this stuff!

My sister-in-law swore by goat's milk products for my nephew. They make soaps and lotions but can be hard to find. You may have to go to Whole Foods or something like that.
