This may/not be helpful...My daughter was 6lbs at her single birth, my twin sons were 4lbs/3lbs respectively, and until the 1st sonogram we had no idea they were twins. My mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, aunts, cousins...never had twins. We found one set of twin girls born pre-1900's in our family bible, otherwise ours are the first. Statistical reports of twin patterns may not be all true. Either way- good luck to you...be there one, or more.

Alright you feel and look bigger your second pregnancy b/c of the fact that your uterus doesn't actually go back to it's previous size. It has already been stretched and grows much more quickly. I am not sure what the chances of having twins are but I do know that you can get the gene for twin from your mother if they were faternal or identical and only faternal twins from your father. NOW I did hear this in high school...like 7 years ago!! I don't know anything about your partners family having twins running in their family. It could be either way. I have gotten so big around but haven't hardly gained ne weight and worry that I am having twins just b/c I am so dang huge it seems like but I have had 4 Ultrasounds and I am 24 weeks they would have found it already I think! I would just assume that it is a possibility and they should be able to tell you at that appointment if it is twins. I would see if about an Ultrasound to confirm how far a long you are and see if there are two babies b/c they won't be able to get a heartbeat till the week after that!

An aside note, as an identical twin myself I think I prefer the term "genetic quirk" to "freak of nature"!

I had twins myself and what I was told is that the type passed along is on the female side, fraternal twins. The identical twins is more of a genetic quirk and is not really something that is genetically passed along. You are more likely to have twins if there are fraternal on your side of the family. My great Aunt had fraternal b/g twins and the boy egg split and she ended up having identical boys, with a girl! My twins are fraternal b/g twins as well and it skipped the entire generation of my mother. Hope that helps a bit.

You could of got the trait from your father, only the woman can make twins, but boys can pass the trait to their daugthers. Race, height and age are also major factors if a mother produces twins. Taller a woman is the greater chances, as well black races tend to carry the trait a lot more then other races, and last but not least, the older we get the more our ovaries "mess up" and chance releasing to eggs.

But in this case she isnt talking about her father, shes talking about the father of her children, therefore his genitic history has zero factor, in the possiblity of twins.

Wow, that is interesting information. My mom had a set of identical twins and I have a set of fraternal twins but my mom has no history of twins in her family but my father on the other hand has a history of several sets of twins both identical and fraternal in his family.

Ok so forget your husband's family they have nothing to do with it! The increased chances of having twins only concerns non-identical twins and is passed down from mother to daughter. So if your mother's cousin is a girl AND was one of non-identical twins AND is the daughter of your mother's sister then you have a good chance of having non-identical twins! It's to do with multiple ovulation which can be genetic. However identical twins are totally randomn! I have identical twin daughters and they have a higher chance than others of having identical twins themselves. That's the only thing I could find on identicals. It's complicate to say the least! lol Good luck!

Identical twins are not hereditary - they'r just a freak of nature. Fraternal twins can be hereditary but ONLY on the Mother's side - so it makes no difference what happened in your husband's family. It would be a trait passed on from Mother to daughter that they tend to release more than one egg at a time. This still isn't a guarantee obviously, and you could have NO history of twins in your family and still have them.

Chances of having twins seems to be higher if already in the family. But saying that the older you are when you conceive is also a factor as I feel pregnant with triplets but unfortunately lost them due to a minor blood disorder that had not been diagnosed at that time. This was rather a shock at the time. I did go on and have a perfectly healthy baby girl afterwards but I was told the older the mother the more eggs get released each month. So I was pleased when I was told I was only having one. Phew! You will just have to wait and see fingers crossed you get what you wished for.

Second child always seems bigger and mom always feels baby a lot sooner. Twins depends on so many factors. I am identical twin with faternal twin uncles, and cousins. I have 3 children none of which are twins. Your husband side actually has zero control over if you have twins, so forget all the twins on his side of his family, it means nothing. Now the cousins may be a factor, depending on if the mother of the twins is blood rated to you, if she is married into your family. Your chances of having twins just went to the same amount as everyone else in the world.

The chance of twins is ~1:32 or 33. If your MOTHER had fraternal twins, your chance can be as high as 1:17. This is nowhere near 10% though.

http://www.nationalpost.com/news/canada/... - Random article (recent) with multiple birth rates for Canada listed as being quite high at nearly 3%.

You can feel movement at 10 weeks? Wow. That seems a bit early to me. Granted, my twins were my first pregnancy, but I still didn't feel any movement til almost twice that. Any chance your dates are off?

I'm sure it's quite possible that you are pregnant w/ twins, but I have no idea of what percentage of a chance you have. I will say that when I was pregnant w/ twins (first pregnancy) I was able to wear my clothes normally until 12 weeks, but when I was pregnant w/ my son... I was showing that much by 5-6 weeks and he was just one baby. You do tend to 'pop out' earlier w/ each pregnancy.

During your second pregnancy two things are almost guaranteed to happen:
1. You'll feel the baby move sooner
2. You'll look pregnant sooner than you did the first time.

The reasons for these things are because you know what fetal movement feels like now so you can recognize it earlier for what it is rather than gas or indigestion. Also, your muscles are relaxed from the previous pregnancy and your body "remembers" being pregnant so you show a lot sooner. The chances of multiple births is about 10%, increase it to about 20% if you were on Clomid or other ovulation medications. If twins runs in your family then it can be slightly higher odds, but it's usually on the mother's side.
