Does anyone know how to make an herb garden and how to get started?

I really want to do fresh herbs this year. I spend so much money at the store with fresh herbs and veggies that I decided to do it myself and save the money. Any extra will go to the farmers market and to my friends! I just really want to get some tips on anything you know about gardening or herb gardening!

Most herbs are annuals so I do those in pots. Rosemary and parsley I put in the ground. Rosemary gets huge so give it room. Mint really spreads so give it room or control it. I second the plucking flowers off basil.

I start my herbs inside with seed starter mix or a starter kit. Then I transplant them into larger pots and bring them outdoors in the day and in at night for about a week. After they get use to the out side they stay out all summer. If you want some herbs are perenials wich means they come back again the following year so you can plant them right into the ground after they start to sprout. If your planting mint it can take over the garden so leave it in a pot to control it. The library has some very good books on herbs if you would like to do that as well. : ) Herbs can also be purchased to plant into a garden or pots. Remember to take off the flowers on the Basil before they get to big so it doesn't make your Basil taste bad. : )

Good luck w/ your Herbs, Nancy

When I first started gardening I would just put some in some pots on our back deck....now that I have been at it for a few years I have a small spot in our back yard just for herbs. We live in a very cold climate and from year to year, I am never sure what will come back each year. Some of them will reseed themselves once you get them going.

Well, I just did one the other day from seeds but only planted three so far. Yesterday I went to Lowes to get some bushes for my front yard and looked at the veggie plants they had and to my surprise they had Herb plants gallore, I will be going back to get those. Are you putting them in pots or tilling an area in your yard? You can get some pressure treated 4x4 at your local lowes or homedepot store and build a herb box instead of having to till in your yard. I use miraclegro fertilizer gardening soil. I love it! It truly makes your plants stronger and larger. If you want to get even more details you can always ask your lowes associate in the garden area they just helped me redo my whole front landscaping and I am truly happy with it.

If you see this, leave this form field blank.

Thank you for your information! I would be doing it in an herb box. I am wanting to use a natural fertilizer. I wanted to have it as green as possible. I love that they have them already ready! I was afraid if I bought the seeds that they wouldn't grow this year! I of course don't know that for sure cause I am just looking into it! I will def. be on the look out! thank you Ms.Raison!
