I was named after my two grandmothers. And it was kinda strange seeing MY name in a tombstone when my paternal grandmother passed since we share the same first and last names. So I swore I won't do the same thing to my kids. My daughter though, has to keep correcting people when they mispronounce her name. In my country, Dana isn't a very common name, and it's always pronounced with a short "a." Correcting the pronounciation has become second nature to her -- my husband feels sorry for her because of this since he's the one who wanted to name her "Dana." I feel it's good that she learns to assert herself at an early age. Plus, I happen to think her name fits her perfectly.
When it came to our son, my husband wanted to make him a junior since he loves his name so much. It was a good thing his mother talked him out of it. She said there are millions of names out there, why can't the kid have his own?

Just wondering, maybe you could use your son's middle name, or a nickname, to change it up. I love my son's names, but one of them isn't in school yet- and I know his name is common- Samuel- so I think about ways we could put some uniqueness in it. Keeping the full name Samuel is a good idea for me, also, maybe using Sammy, or his middle name, Edward, or a form of Edward. It is so hard to choose a name for a child, but rest assured, I'm sure you chose the right one- it's just up to you to make it work. God bless you in your endeavors.

my kids are 7 and 9... I only know one Michael, no Sarahs, no Jennifers...maybe one Ashley, no Jasons...I told my friend the other day...if you want your child's name to stand out...pick the most common name from when you were growing up!

My name is Elliott but I like to be called Ellie. People always think I am a guy and it is so annoying. I named my son Austin Emil Manios. They middle name is his fathers middle name and it is also his last name. I HATE the middle name but I ppicked the first name and dad picked the middle name. Well, now I am no longer with the father and he rarely pays any attn to his son so I am thinking about changing Austs middle name and giving him my last name. He is only 3 so I dont think the name change will affect him much. I just dont know what middle name to give him. Any ideas???

My husband and I love older names, and names that arn't very common. We have 2 daughters, Amelia Mae and Eliza Grace. In out small town they are the only ones with their names. We call Amelia Milly, and there are alot of Milly's/Millies/Milli's in town...but no Amelia's...and i like that! I was the only Victoria EVER in school....didn't so much like the name, but i never had to share it with anyone else. As silly as it seems, im the same with our children. We'd love to have a Henry or Nelson if we had a boy and my husband loves the name Lola and i love Sienna (which i know has become very common over the past few years, but i so love it :))

I loved the name Petra when my daughter was born in 1973 she absolutely hates the name so I don"t think it matters what you call your children they never seem to like their names, I think what matters is that you look at the names and see what 'nicknames" the name can be changed to, remember these children grow up to be adults and have to keep their name.

When I was pregnant with my son me and my late partner both wrote down a list of names we liked for both girls and boys, the ones we both liked we put to the top of the lists and they became our fave names. After our son was born we just instantly knew that he suited the name 'Connor' (which we named him) as opposed to Jack which were our favorite two boy names. The middle names were a bit trickier! I wanted the middle name Jay (Connor Jay) so that we could nick name him 'CJ' but we changed our minds and used both our fathers names as his middle names and we still get to call him CJ because my dads name is John! After naming our son I've heard so many other little boys with the name Connor!! but i wouldn't change it at all it totally suits him =)

my hubby picked the names of both our kids (21 mo and expecting), and though I'm not crazy about their names I wouldn't change them. my MIL was annoyed that we picked a name of 3 other people their extended family for our daughter but it fits her so well. I had the opposite problem growing up, my name was so uncommon that no one knew how to pronounce it (which still baffles me). I've been trying to think of a name for our unborn son (because I still don't like daddy's choice) but I know that it is his name so nothing else feels comfortable.

Use a nickname! My niece was named 'Jessica', but quickly became known as 'Jetta'- less common, cute and personal. Or, use his middle name.

I actually changed my daughter's name at 6 weeks; I was so embarrassed at first but now I know I did the right thing. She fits her name and we just love it; I did try to love her other name but never felt it.
Now I tell people, wait till you meet your child and then see the if the name fits. Don't force yourself to stick to a name just because that is what you decided.

LMAO!! I'm reading these posts and reading about all the women who are irritated or pissed because someone can't pronounce their childs odd name. DUH.

You picked odd uncommon spellings and pronounciations in favor of being unique.

You didn't see this coming? My kids names are always mispronounced. They calmly correct the person if they're going to be friends but if its the waitress at the restaurant, they let it go. Our dental receptionist has been told that "aa" is a LONG "A" sound but she still can't get it right. This is the same ditz who frequently screws up our appointments.

I don't really wish that I had chosen a different name for my eldest daughter who is 7, I just wish I had spelled it differently. Her name is Aquenah and the proper spelling is Aquinah. I figured that people would know how to pernounce her name but she is constantly being called Aqueenah!!!!

My older sons' name is not very common but it isn't desperately unusual either.

My younger sons' full name is very uncommon but the shortened nickname.. lol well, he's one of 4 kids with the name in his CLASS. Not grade, lol. He likes it.

I named my oldest son Neil Matthew. I really love the name Matthew but a classmate from high school had a son right before me and named him Matthew. So, I used it as a middle name. (I have not seen her since high school and we have lived many miles from one another) dumb reason not to name your child something you like. But, I do like his name. Neil fits him. He is now 24. I love my 2nd son's name. It is Austin Scott. He is 20. When I had him Austin was very uncommon, now it is very common. but I still like it. My 3rd son's hame is Colton Grant. His dad loved the name Colton and I hated it. I called him baby for the first year. He is 16 now and I like his name. It fits him, but it took me a long time to like it. They are good solid names that do not get mispronounced! I think it is important to name kids so ppl don't say or spell it wrong.

i love my daughters name we chose Aloura Mya my next baby girl will be Alina lynn if i have a boy he willl end up with an old name Edward Alexander (after my father and my husband) i prefer different names i didn't have any one with the same name as me in all of my school years and i loved it and i want to make sure that my children have the same expireance

Yep, I do. My sons name is Hallie (Hal-Lee), but people often call him Hailey. The only reason I agreed to the name was because it was my husbands grandfathers name and he really wanted to name him that. He is getting to the age that it bothers him when people call him Hailey.

HAHA. I am also one of those Jessica's that hates her name. ok maybe not hate but I have told my mother she should have been more original. In elementary and junior high I had a class of the same 32 kids... 3 Jessica's in it. that's a lot for a small class! We had to go by last initial for years I go by Jessie now but still! Oh my sons name is Hale. (rhymes with Hail, male, whale). Sometimes I get frustrated because people call him Holly, Halle or Hailey and had I thought people could be so dumb I may have picked something different. oh well, thats what my boyfriend wanted and I liked its originality, too late now!

i named both of my boys so i'm happy with what we named them. I loved the name Jack but i thought naming him just Jack was too plain so we named him Jackson. Suits him really well. I hate his middle name...Nicholas. He was supposed to be Jackson Alexander but his mother pulled a fit in the hospital room. Over his first name too...said she absolutely hated it and it was a terrible name!.....her and my bf ended up changing his middle name because in Russia they have a tradition where the babies (no matter how many u have and if their a boy or girl) automatically get the fathers name as their middle name. His name is Nikolai but they changed the middle name to Nicholas. She tried it with my 2nd but this time i wouldnt budge and his name is Preston Lee. I absolutely love his name. I wanted a boy the 2nd time around just so i could name him Preston. It really really suits him....

I just don't like the name her dad gave to her but I have learnt to love it coz I love my baby. The reason being that it's a name associated with one of our aunts who was very irresponsible and whenever my baby's name is mentioned, people think of her not that my baby is or will be like her but they start talking about the woman.

I wish I would have named my second a different name. His father picked the name and I went along with it because I figured he'd be in his life, Now after him being out of his life for 6 years as of april 4th, I wish I would have named his Lucky. I am a huge GH fan and my last name was Spencer and his is Spencer. I would have had my own Lucky Spencer. But now, I still want to change his middle name. His name Is Caelyn Stanleigh, I want to change his name to Caelyn Lorenzo!!!!

I too have a common first and middle name, and so gave my girls unique first names and common middles, my oldest is still called by her unique name (Trinity) my youngest is called by her common (Lynn). You never can tell what they will choose to be called when they grow up,

my daughters name is Mika and I LOVE IT but everyone pronounces it wrong, which is VERY annoying. It is pronounced (Mee-Kah) and people either say Mike-ah or Mick-ah...i think it is a beautiful name, and I am just hoping that she doesn't get annoyed with the pronunciation.

My son' name was chosen by my husband and there was no changing his mind. I love the name (John). It suits my son like no other name. My oldest daughter's name is Ashlyn, but so many people call her Ashley-even after she corrects them, so she started going by her middle name--Elizabeth. My youngest daughter's name is Sarah. There is no other name that would fit her although she prefers to go by Princess Peach! I love my kids' names and never questioned them. Its a long process and too important to be questioned!

My hubby and i decided on the name Scarlett for our little girl we loved it for 3 years before she was born and it suits her. We also like the name Chad for a boy. I think you really have to be sure about names as the children are the ones who have to deal with them for life. My mum and dad told me when i was pregnant to think of all the nasty things that can go with the name and if there are too many dont choose it and also make sure they can spell there own name when they are older.

My son's name is Dustin Lance, after his two uncles. I had said when we were first married that I would never name my son Dustin because it sounded like Dust. But with three days before my planned C section we still didn't have a name. Funny enough I was the one who suggested naming him after his uncles. He is totally a Dustin and I wouldn't change it now for anything.

We tried for a long time to have our daughter so we had a lot of time to think about baby names but I have been a Primary School teacher for 15 years in really tough areas so it was REALLY hard to come up with a name that didn't conjure up some vivid memories. Then when I found out I was actually pregnant I had a dream that it was a girl and she told me her name was Miranda and that was it. I couldn't have called her anything else.

We gave her the middle name Louise and we love her name but it is a bit tricky with nicknames because we don't like Randi or Manda. At this stage her family nick name is Miss Moo and I'm sure when she gets to school her little friends will give her another one.

My oldest daughter's name is Arista Karren (and I LOVE her name!!), and my youngest daughter's name is Avery Marely (I love her name too, but after I was out of the hospital, I ran into like 3 little girls with the name Avery!) my son's name is richard james, but we call him RJ. I wish i wouldnt have let his father talk me into naming RJ after him. His name is richard, and his dad's name is richard. we are broken up now...wish i would have went with what i wanted since RJ will be my only child. I wanted to name him Dakota James...and call him DJ. Those were my dad's initials. But the James part of his name is after my dad, so i got part of it right. My dad's name was Dennis.

i have 4 children. yes, i wish i had given my oldest a different name because her name is pretty common too, Kathryn, but her first name isn't what i hate. it's her middle name, Nicole, because my ex husband named her after his best friend. my second child? well, his entire name is very common, tyler chase. i wish i had given him a different name as well. but my third and fourth children, their names suit them very well and my third ones name is Harli Dawn. i love her name. Harli for a girl isn't common at all.thats why i chose it for her. and well, my baby her name is Mackenzie Jordan. it goes with her pretty well too. it just sets off her attitude of noone's going to mess with me or my mom but yes, i think a lot of us do wish we had named our children differently.

My daughters name is Tommi and I still love it! I wanted to name my daughter this since I was in high school and so it was well thought out. I have a pretty "normal" name so I wanted her to be different....My test was "would i like to have the name?" and I love it so hopefully she will too. If not her middle name is Jolene which is not super common either so she can go by that but I think she will love it b/c we do and it fits her

I am also a Jessica, my mother, coming from another country, thought she was being original. Oh well.
I have 3 boys. The first two have orginal names (Dexter and Theodore). My husband really wanted to call number 3 Noah. So we did. I like the name. It does suit him, but doesn' quite fit with the other two. And secretly, every time I look at him, I see a Hayes. Love that name, but my hubby vetoed it without any consideration. Oh well, it is not like I am going to love my Noah any less. :)

When I named our oldest 13 years ago Dylan was nowhere to be found,...but now it's everywhere! Our 4th is Stan , people look at us funny at first , but then when you meet him it all fits, he's like a stubborn old man, it's pretty cool. I think it's nice to have a name you don't always hear , but it does make some kids feel out of place. Our 2nd son Wyatt wishes his name was Matt , Wyatt is starting to be more popular....I wish it hadn't caught on so much , I loved that it was different at the time 12 years ago.

I've enjoyed reading everyone's responses, thank you for sharing! It makes me feel better to know I'm not the only one who has questioned the name they chose for their child. Naming our baby boy was so hard compared to our girls. Our first daughter we had named even before she was concieved, we just changed the middle name. Our second daugther took a little bit of talking about, but it was a pretty easy choice. When we found out we were having a boy neither of us could agree on a name. We finally came up with 2 full names we could agree on by the time I was 8 1/2 months.
I love my girls names, and have never wanted to change them. Of course every time I tell people theirs names they say them wrong (Cadence is always Katelynn or Cadenth and Ashlyn is Ashley, or Ashton), but maybe I just mumble to much.

My son has the same name as your son, Dylan. I don't think it is all that common, I do know 2 or 3 Dylan's, but only 1 that I know of goes to the same school as him. I know a woman that has a son named Dillon, and a woman with a nephew named Dillan. Actually when I tell people my son's name they always spell it wrong. When they see his name written down they sometimes pronounce it wrong. I really like the name Dylan. If I had named him something else it would probably be Logan, Michael or Austin, and those are all common names also. I want to name my kids names that I like rather than trying to find a name that is uncommon that I might not like as much.

to pick a name, my husband and i each made a long list of names we liked and we both hated each other's list of potential names. then out of frustration one night we went through the online baby names website and started from the 'A' names and added Shepard to the last name and read out each one until we got to Cole. it sounds strong and it flows with his last name. it's also not too common, but not too one-of-a-kind which is a compromise between my unique name, ina (pronounced eye-na) and my husband's too common name (jim). when we laid eyes on our son the name just flowed off our tongues and i can't imagine naming him anything else.

My son had no name for a week and then we settled on Jacob. I like it but I didn't love it and just calling him "baby boy" wasn't gonna cut it for much longer. At about 12 months I came across the name Dexter which I love and it would have really suited him. I made a half assed attempt to talk Dad into renaming him but was vetoed.

So I"m saving the name for my next puppy and Jacob will remain Jacob. Or likely Jacob G. by the time he gets to school as it is very common.

I am having a hard time with the name thing, I had at the time a very unusual name, never knew anyone in the school with my name and hated it cause no one had it and then later as I got older it was always the joke because my middle name is Lynne so now it sounded like a porn name, Amber Lynne, I mean come on!!!! Anyway I found out yesterday that I am having a girl and her last name is going to be Kelly and the only name that my boyfriend and I like so far is Kiera, but then I wanted to giver her his mother's middle name which is Karol, spelled with a "K" but then that makes her initials KKK????? Hmmmmmm that just seems wrong as well, so yes, I would say that names are hard to figure out and wondering about whether you gave them the right name is probably pretty normal!!!

I named our son Nathen he is 7.5 months old becuz I like the name Nate. So for short we call him Nate, but the spelling we picked isnt' as common and I kinda wish I just named him Nate instead. By the way my sister just named her daughter Jessica.
