Does your infant under 6months sleep on their belly?

My daughter is 5 and a half monts and lately I have been having to fight her to go to sleep on her side or back in which she refuses to sleep on. All she wants to do is sleep on her belly. IF i happen to get her to fall asleep on side or back she rolls multiple times in the middle of the night. The doctor said becareful SIDS has had common cases up to 6 months. What can I do to help her to sleep on belly? I DONT AT ALL let her sleep with stuffed animals or toys. She gets 1 light blanket only. I dont put blankets to keep her from rolling for it causes a suffacation hazard. SO WHAT CAN I DO????

YEAH! Thank you I am past the chocking stages from vomit, though that does not mean I am not aware of it she is comfortable eating and swallowing just fine, my main concern was how to keep her from sleeping on her belly considering doctor recomended NOT to have her on her belly as much as possible while sleeping, during play and tummy time only but SIDS occurs until 1yr yes but is not many cases over the ages of 6months. I THANK ALL THE MOTHER IN WHOM SUGGESTED THE ANGEL SLEEPER AND GAVE THEIR SOOTHING ADVICE :) CLOSING POST :) TAKE CARE MOMMY'S

I have 2 kids of my own and I have babysat since I was a teenager. I was always told never lay a newborn on their backs because they are not used to swallowing and could easily aspirate and drown. I have never laid an infant on their back. I have always been told that after 3 months the baby will be gin to get more active and could possibly roll over and that was the infants choice.

I have had 2 children both of whom slept on their bellies since the day they were brought home! I was told that letting them sleep on their backs or sides gave the risk of them aspirating in their sleep because they were unused to swallowing and got choked easily. They slept under a blanket that I kept folded down their backs.

I had my son sleep with a sleep positioner until he was 5 months and that helped put him into a routine to sleep on his back... when he was 7 months he started sleeping on his tummy.

A couple of my children were exactly the same, once they could roll over they preferred to sleep on their stomach's no matter how much I tried to turn them. Not only that but even in the dead of winter they would kick the blankets off. I ended up using a baby sleeping bag to make sure they kept warm but there wasn't anything I could do about them sleeping on their stomach's.

Tabitha, A little known stat about SIDS is that it almost never happens to white babies of non smoking parents. I have four kids and several nieces and nephews and all were belly sleepers. Its okay to let your baby sleep how she most comfortable. Don't worry she will be fine.

Both of my kids fought every night to sleep on there belly's. They both always ended up on their tum's and I had many sleepless nights because of sid's awareness that they pump you full of. It is hard but if she is ending up that way there is not to much you can do but just check on her every few hours and make sure there is nothing in her crib she can choke or suffocate on. Good luck hun.

If I swaddle my daughter she gets very upset she needs all control of her hand and feet and view of them at that too. I do thank you tiffany for the link no one gave it to me and it saves the endless hours id spend looking for it. Much of these mothers information has been very helpful. I do appreciate it. Also there is no found CAUSE of SIDS or guarentueed way to prevent it but I do thank god I have my mommy senses and am able to resort to resorceful information and mothers.

My son sleeps better on his tummy. he's been sleeping like that since he was one month. It's also helped him to get strength in his neck and hold his head up alot better. He is know three months and is able to push himself up on his hands.

my daughter is almost 6 months old and has been sleeping on her belly since she was about 3 weeks. She used to sleep on her back but she was flail around and wake herself up about every 20 min. we put her on her belly to nap once and she's been that way ever since. but she too could lift her head up almost perfectly since she was 2 days old. i'd say if she can lift her head up she should be ok, and if she can roll over she'll definitely be ok. i'd still only keep 1 light blanket on her though, just in case!

Wow, well my twins were two months early so in the hospital they put them on there tummies to sleep because it helped with breathing and when they came home a month later that was the only position they liked to fall asleep in, so I let them then if I could I would turn them while they slept otherwise I would put one of those things you can buy that have rolls on either side and a flat bottom so they cant roll around but I think your child will sleep the way they want to sleep and if they can lift their head you really dont have that much to worry about they can roll for a reason its hard to relax and let things happen but sometimes being to conserned will make things worse. Hope all works out for you

Clearly nothing is 100% foolproof in preventing a tragedy, but if it eases your mind at all, get one of these

http://www.angelcare-monitor.com/United-...

I hear a lot of people say things like them don't work right, but either they were cheaper imitations, or being used incorrectly.

Mine works AMAZINGLY. and really helped me sleep at night. We tested it several times after installing it EXACTLY according to the instruction manual. I was skeptical at first, but it can detect the baby's breathing/heartbeat/movement even when that baby is so still you can't believe it!! And once you take the baby out, it starts beeping a really loud alarm after 20 seconds of no motion being detected. It's a fabulous product, we still use it (And I plan to continue using it for a long time), and my son is 7 months old.

EDIT: and I'm a dummy and just realized several other people also already recommended this product :-)

this is definitley what you need and a little music and with the breathing totally normal...you will get used to the sounds but this will take anxiety off you and they have to be swaddled nice and tight in here.. thats the key... http://www.toysrus.com/family/index.jsp?...

I can relate ever since my Identical twin boys Liam and Brayden got close to two to two in half months, they won't sleep on anything but there tummies. Now there three month as of February 2nd. They sleep on there tummy everyday and night, every noise I hear other than snooring or normal breathing sounds I go and check on the little darlings. When they were one to two weeks old we put them to sleep on there back or side, now they will not sleep on anything but there tumies. Just always keep your intercome close by if you hear a noise and it sounds like distress go check on the little darling...mine are starting to roll over by them selfes is another reason that I don't fight with them anymore over that. Its a good idea to not let her sleep with stuffed animals or extra blankets, always make sure to turn her head to the side when you lay her on her tummy.

My son wouldn't sleep (and still doesn't sleep) in any other position. It made me nervous and sleepless until I bought an Angel Care Monitor which has a sensor pad that goes under the bassinet mattress and then later the crib mattress and senses breathing...it saved my (and to this day, my son is now 8 months old) sanity!!!

Here's a tip get a larger swaddler, and swaddle her in it(get the ones with the velcrow to stap her arms in a V shape), see babies use their arms to move, and if her arms are secured she will stay in place. Obviously you want her to stay on her back, and she's going to try and roll over, the best advice that i can give you is the swaddler, and rock her to sleep. Put her on her back and the best thig I can say is to keep an eye on her at all times while napping, etc. You can roll her back over on her back and try singing a lullaby to her to try and relax her. The swaddler will definitley help to keep her from rolling over. DO NOT use the foamy things where you can place them where you want to keep hre from rolling over, because she is 5 months old she can move her way down and turn her head and suffocate on the pads, believe me I've asked my home visiting nurse and my doctor's, they said it is another cause of SIDS. And i definitley would not recommend that okay! I hope this helps. Let me now if it does, or what has or hasn't helped okay! I'm here if you have anymore questions. Courtney

EVERYTIME i check on her she is fine THAT will never stop my concern and I have searched over 3 local walmarts 2-3 other various locations for the foam thingy and CAN NOT find one ugh. But illhave to buy it online I am thinking. Thank you Ashlye for the responce I am VERY relieved to know that the pausing in the breathing is not so abnormal with her. It is a very scary thing to wake up to her on her belly i constantly life her arms poke her etc to see if she is breathing. I PERSONALLY CAN ONLY SLEEP ON MY BELLY 90% the time so I know how comfortable it is. LOL but i do research the studies in SIDS and it brings GRAVE concern to me. Im hopin to find a device to better sooth my ANXIETY cause boy do I have enough of it. THANK YOU MOMMIES for allll the advice

Just noticed someone else's post and I would highly recommend the Angelcare monitor as well which monitors the breathing and can be placed under the crib mattress. This will absolutely give the additional peace of mind for you.

I also had (have) a Angel Care Monitor and it helped me greatly. Our little girl was born in winter so she was always swaddled and slept in our room (not our bed) till she was a little older than 6 months but when she went into her own room she was still wrapped for a little while. Once summer came it was far to hot to swaddle her and she was then old enough to roll onto her tum all by herself.
Once they can do this there really is no way to stop them. Even if you got up 3 times through the night and put her on her back she would just roll over again.
My daughter is now 18 months old and I still use the Angel Care Monitor.

My daughter (second child), unlike my first child, refused to sleep on anything BUT her belly. I was distraught about it for so long because I was so paranoid of SIDS, and of course I was also sleepless as a result. I tried many different sleep contraptions such as the cocoon sleeper and other techniques to try to get her to sleep on her back but nothing would work. I finally resigned to just let her sleep on her tummy, and I just watched and woke often at night to check on her. She did just fine and is almost 1 year old now (and still sleeps on her tummy every night!). SIDS is definitely something for all of us to be concerned about, but I believe there are statistics that certain babies are more prone to it, such as male babies, etc. You can look up more blogs on this on babycenter.com. I looked there and found relief to find many going through the same struggle, which is when I finally let my worries go and let her sleep that way since she refused to sleep on her back.

Since she's already 5 and a half months, I would do yourself a favor as well and let her go to sleep on her tummy - just turn her head to the side, and you can check on her in the night. Remember that many of our parents put us to bed on our stomachs. Also, get her a sleep sack too instead of a blanket. I used a light cotton blanket for a long time like you as well but your baby will start rolling around even more so a sleep sack works great to keep them warm even if they roll around and it obviously can't cover their face.

Good luck and once again, check out more on this on babycenter.com. Just put in "sleeps on stomach" or something like that and you will get a ton of blogs on it.

Tabitha, my daughter as well would rather sleep on her tummy, i am not sure what there really there it to do, since they are wanting to be comfortable when sleeping. I do notice sometimes her breathing does pause as well, but i think that is a common thing in babies, my doctor didn't have much to say about it either. i understand the worrying, i worry like the best of them.
Hope everything works out!!

THANK YOU mothers of older toddler and children it sets my min a little as ease to know its a very common thing. ALL i can do is be aware to prevent the situation. If i sit here and think ohh shes ok she can move her head PERFECTLY fine and has ALL the strength in the world to get her self out of a smoothered situation, but that make me a ignorant nieve mom. Though it doesnt STOP my worring it means alot to know that many moms go through this same situation and have encouraging information. THANK YOU

I know SIDS is the reason they say not to put them on their tummy's. But I was always so scard they would spit up and choke on their back. I have raised 4 kids and they all slept on their tummy. I just always made sure the sheets were on correct, and a light blanket. But you do as you choose. It is hard to keep them from rolling once they figure it out. lol

I do ALL I can physically to keep her on her back but during day time ALL she does is roll. I dont kno if she is just rolling over or wanting to sleep on her belly. From the looks of it she seems to ONLY want to sleep on belly. I will lye her inher bed on her back or side and she rolls INSTANTLY in dead sleep, Ill roll her over to back and away we go doing this 5-10 times or untill she awakes. I WONT go to bed knowing she is asleep on her belly, I more than not just sit there and watch her sleep so that she can sleep peacefully.

THANK YOU SOO MUCH. I have never heard of that but IT BRINGS EXTREME interest. She has been rolling on her own for almost a month now. SHe more commonly rolls from back to tummy though I know she can go from tummy to back. My doctor suggested a bed bumper thing where it keeps them from being able to turn around and I cant manage to find one. I keep a fan on reducing SIDS by 98% and he said SIDS is commonly enduced by over heating and suffacation considering babies can not determine if their body is over heating. I can reasonably understand this. I just am getting very drained CONSTANTLY stressing and worring. I had recently noticed when naping with her that she had been pausing her breathing. I mentioned to my doctor and he disregarded it completely. Do you know off hand where I might be able to purchase this? I appreciate your feed back as well.

You sound like a very concerned and aware mother. There are a couple things you can do. Once a baby is old enough to roll over on their own easily, the risk of SIDS decreases hugely, so you could just let her sleep how she's comfortable. If you're still nervous, look into purchasing an AngelCare monitor that can tell you if she has a long delay in breathing or stops (they lay on it). This way she can also sleep how she's comfortable. I hope you can get some rest and let some of the anxiety go with one of these at least, because it's obvious you really are caring and concerned.
