hey mums!

my son is just on 5months old and everytime i put him on his tummy he loves it for literally 2 minutes and then starts chucking a tantrum.

he will lay on mine or daddys tummy and hav a giggle and play but when i put him on the floor or under his gym he doesnt seem to like it!

Also ive been feeding him custard in the mornings for the past 2weeks and ive just tried rice cereal and he doesnt seem to liek it. he spits it out n i have to keep spooning it in. he eventually eats it but u can tell he dont enjoy it, is there another alternative?

My daughter had a reaction to the rice cereal but when I did give it to her she didn't seem to care for it. Now that she is 6months her Dr. wants me to try it again. Don't worry sometimes it just takes a little longer for them to start to enjoy food other then milk. And tummy time is a battle in our house as well. She still doesn't care to be on her tummy however doesn't mind to be on her tummy in the boppy so she is at an angle on her tummy. And tummy time counts if she is on you while on her tummy. Try new things you never know what might work for your baby.

Infants in traditional societies are hardly ever placed on the ground. They're always in-arms or strapped to someone's back. And yet they manage to crawl much earlier than your average western infant.

That being said- being in-arms is much different than spending one's time lolling in a car seat, swing, or bouncy chair. Those tend to delay development.

Concerning his dislike of cereal- great. It offers not much more than wallpaper paste.

Yeah my daughter never liked tummy time, i never forced the issue, she was walking by 12 months so it didnt delay her and even if it had, i really didnt see the issue. As for the rice ceral she wasnt the biggest fan of it plain either but i used to mix in a few spoons or fruit puree with the rice cereal and she would eat the whole bowl hope this helps.

One more thing. If your son is breastfeeding, try mixing the cereal with breastmilk. If he takes formula, then use formula. It will taste more familiar and then you can switch to water later.

My son did not like tummy time for very long unless he was on one of our stomachs either. just keep at it and don't wait until he gets too frustrated. Babies used to sleep on their tummies and back then they liked tummy time better.Once my son learned how to roll, he spent all his time on his tummy.

I'm not sure who advised you to start with custart as a first food. Rice cereal and then other single grain cereals come first. Just keep at it again. It takes a while for babies to learn to swallow instead of spitting it out. Spitting out is a reflex. I was told that if they keep spitting it out to wait a week or two and try again. Some babies are ready at 4 months to eat and some not until 6 months.

Don't get frustrated. Your baby will learn everything in his own time. Every baby is unique.

maybe you can try to get on your belly for a few minutes with him looking at him, maybe he'll like it better if he can see you. also for the rice cereal, maybe you can try using oatmeal and banana gerber cereal, -my daughter didnt like the rice either so i gave her that- mixed with formula (or breast milk). it has some flavor to it and isnt so bland. there are other types out there you can try. if you look at the gerber food they have a picture of which baby's can use what certain foods according to they're milestones. for instance there is supported sitter, sitter, crawler, toddler, preschooler.

When my son started eating cereal, he didn't like it either. I mixed it with fruit baby food instead of formula. I also tried different cereals..he LOVED barley cereal!

My son was the same way with tummy time and I just kept putting him on his tummy on the floor for 5-10 minutes everyday even if he cried. Thats what my doctor suggested and eventually he got used to it and learned how to roll over if he didn't want to be on his tummy.

My son also wasn't very fond of rice cereal unless it was mixed with his formula, but when I stopped mixing it with formula and was just adding water, I always gave it to him with fruit or veggies and put a little of both on the spoon for each bite.

Hope this helps!! : )
