Dylan, my husband and I are a very outdoors oriented family. Everytime we are at a lake, pool, and even the ocean Dylan dips his mouth underwater and tastes it (over and over) Of course i know its not exactally healthy, but hes only 8 months so saying no wont work and he absolutly LOVES swimming!

I have asked the same questions about my 8 month old and I was told that he should be fine. I live in a city where the water is terrible and the doctors claim its safe for baby bottles (not that I would ever make a bottle with it). As far as I know, they have to close swimming areas with high levels of bacteria for just that reason. He should be fine. If you hear of high bacteria levels, make sure you steer clear of that swimming area until a couple days after they give it a go ahead. As for chlorinated pools, I was told that as long as he wasn't going swimming right after it being treated with chemicals, then he would be fine. Being active outweighs the stuff he is taking in swallowing the water so enjoy the outdoors and let him be a little fish :)

My family are competitive swimmers and I used to be a surf instructor, and as a kid I used to swim everywhere, lakes, oceans, pools, mudpuddles LOL. I did the same thing and nothing ever happened to me. I think I first did it in our swimming pool when I was about 3 months old. ( although they are loaded with chlorine). y son swims in the lake where we go and gulps some in too. I wouldn't stress about it. I did it till I was about 9. And then during a surf wipeout you do it accidentally. Its gross to think about but I dont think there is any harm, he's probably just curious and feeling out his surroundings. Everything else goes in the mouth during teething why would water be any different.

My son is almost 9 and he still does it even though I tell him it is gross.....Most kids probably do it:)

I still have that problem with my almost 3 yr old...it doesn't get any easier. Just make sure that at the first sign of illness, you take him to the doc and let the doc know that you are concerned because he drank from ____lake, or pool. Good luck, I hope that you have better luck at breaking that habit :D

As long as he doesn't take a substantial amount, he will be O.K. I wish i can give my 3 year old swimming lessons. About to do my research
