I need to give a little background here to start. I started menstruating at the age of 11. My periods never regulated ever. I went on BCP at the age of 22 (2001).
In December 2006 my hubby and I decided to go off BCP and try for a baby. By June 2007 I still hadn't had a period, let alone not pregnant. I went to my doc and insisted they investigate. They did an ultrasound and bloodwork and diagnosed me with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). I saw a fertility specialist in September 2007 who put me on a slew on medications, including a round of progesterone to stimulate a period (by that time, 9 months later I had finally had 1 cycle). We were told with the severity of mine we had only a 6% chance of conceiving naturally, then a 50:50 chance of carrying any pregnancy to term. We planned to start Clomid in January 2008. January 1, 2008 I found out I was pregnant (miraculously just 3 days before we were to start Clomid). I did carry to term and delivered a healthy boy in September 2008.
I started menstruating postpartum in June 2009. I shockingly got another one 28 days later in July 2009, then 30 days later in August 2009. Then I had a horrible case of dysmenorrhea in September 2009 (2 weeks later) and then again 3 weeks later in October 2009. The one in October the doctors stopped with transexamic acid and progesterone.
I breastfed my son until November 2009 when he suddenly stopped nursing. 2 weeks later I found out I was pregnant again (we weren't "trying" so it was a bit of a surprise cause we had only not used a condom ONCE). I also carried to term and had a healthy baby girl in July 2010.
After I had my daughter, I didn't menstruate again until September 2011. It was extremely heavy, lasting about 8 days. Then a week after it stopped I got another one that lasted 10 days and was very heavy. I went to the doc and they stopped it again with progesterone. Then again in October (8 days later) lasting about 2 weeks. At that point, they put me onto the BCP to regulate my periods again. I didn't want to go on again, but was told I needed to to control the dysmenorrhea. Even being on the BCP I was having HEAVY bleeding (and I mean saturating 2 maxis an hour). throughout December 2011 and into January 2012. I had to go to the ER and have an internal to make sure all was okay. I also had another Ultrasound. They found a tiny fibroid (new from the last ultrasound) but nothing that should cause all the bleeding. After I bled 6 out of 8 weeks, my doctor put me on the BCP full time, with no off weeks at all in February 2012. He said he believes my pregnancies have cause the hormonal part of my PCOS to go haywire. He also increased the dose. It was pretty good for not bleeding at all, but then this past month, I've had maybe 2-3 days a week every week where I am spotting again.
So here's my questions:
Has anyone had something similar happen to them or know someone that had this? What did they do to control it better/stop the bleeding? Were you successful at getting off BCP? I'd really like to not be on it. I am super concerned about my future fertility (I'd really LOVE another one day but wouldn't go through fertility treatments to have one either). I'm only 33y so I don't want to have a hysterectomy at this point in time. I'm not ready to say 100% I wouldn't have another kid. I'm debating going off the BCP all together and seeing what happens with my cycles again. Maybe a trial of an off week every 3 months and go through the breakthrough bleeding to get rid of it? I don't know. What do you all think?
