How do you bring peace when your child doesn't want to eat the food served at a friend / family's house when visiting? I know you're not supposed to force your child to eat but it causes so much awkwardness and sometimes hurt feelings?

I also think it depends on the age of your child. My daughter is 14mo. She eats well but has only just started trying cooked table foods. My friends and family are all aware that I pack in her finger foods, fruit and such. I've been letting her try whatever is cooked and then fill in with the foods I bring. If she won't eat something, its because its new and she's just not ready yet. I stress that I'm glad she tasted it. The only place its awkward is at my parents house, where they think infants should have bbq ribs at birth! I make it my fault, that I decided to have this eating plan and they need to respect that. Now they go to great lengths to have the kinds of foods I will let my daughter eat as part of the meal. But anyone who has kids of any age should understand that they have a mind of their own! Just try to make sure your child tastes what's served and is polite about about not wanting it, if they are the age to be able to expect that. And don't go to great lengths to find them food, they can wait until its time to eat agian. If you know your child is a picky one, it might be good to plan ahead and have some sort of food, small snack type, to fill in with after they refuse.

How old is you son? when my son was younger i would carry some food for him or make something at my friends place if they are close. But now he is five so i ask him to try whatever has been served and if he doesn't like it he can always have the bread or just rice.

Be honest. "I'm sorry my son isn't used to food like this." Try to get him/her to eat stuff you think they will like, like the breadrolls or mashed potatoes. Hopefully if the whole meal is inedible for your child the hosts will find a poptart for him to tide him over.
My kids are older 14, 10, & 6 yrs - they know they're expected to try everything. If they honestly don't like it, thats ok, but they have to try it and they aren't allowed to be dramatic about stuff they don't like.
but younger kids are just learning their manners - so honesty is best.
