I've tried Wellebutrin, patches, gum, willpower. I know I need to quit. I'm almost 38 and have been smoking for 20 years. It's way past time I quit but every time I try, I get to a certain point where I just can't stand myself anymore and I always break down and buy a pack. Last time we tried to quit (my husband and I) we made it nearly 2 weeks, which is the longest I've ever gone, and I hate that I started again. My aunt tells me that when she smoked they didn't have all the chemicals in the cigarettes like today...she swears this is why she was able to quit so easily 25 years ago and why I am struggling so much.

What did you do? What was successful for you? Any advice is welcome, any tips or help greatly appreciated. And before anyone says it, no, I do not smoke in my home or around my son. And we always wash our hands after :)

I had to quit cold turkey. And I smoked for 36yrs.I was in the hospital last May having emerg.surgery.The drs. told me that if I didn't quit I would be on oxygen for the rest of my life. And I'm 47yrs. old & I'm too young to be on oxygen.Sure I have the urge for a cigarette once in a while.I kept telling myself if I can make it 1 wk. I can make it a yr.,& if I can make it 2mos.I can make it 2yrs. & so on.I am on my way of being "SMOKE FREE" for 1yr. MAY 19th.Think of your son every time you light up THAT SHOULD BE ENOUGH TO WANT TO STOP SMOKING!!

I have a 9 month old daughter and i quit when she was born, still crave everyday but they arn't as strong now. I LOVED smoking, but wan't to live long and see my kids grow up. I would love to be one of thoes social smokers that could have a fag now and again but I just no I can NEVER have another smoke or I will take it up again.. My husband is a non- smoker and that makes a big difference. good luck

I started smoking at 16. Once during a cold (age 32) I was just sick as a dog, and a friend (who was a nurse AND a smoker) told me I was in nicotine withdrawal, and try the patch. I did, and WHAT an eye opener!! My horrible cold turned into a minor annoyance. It was shocking.

Of course I went back to smoking as soon as I was better.

4 months later I began dating my now husband (non-smoker). The only thing he ever said to me about smoking was "I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I don't want you to die from this if you can prevent it" Never said another word, and I went on the patch for good 2 weeks later.

9 years have passed, and just about every day I have the crave for one still, but there is no way I will ever have one again.

I am doing the Chantix. The down fall is it will make you sick. I still have cravings but I just think to myself.. "I dont want my kids smoking" It smells bad and it isnt safe for your kids to be around smoke. And that gives me more than enough reasons to quit.

You can try anything you want to quit, but you need to really WANT the quit! I used gum the last time I quit ( I am quit over 2 years) Also www.quitnet.com is very helpful or was to me. The average smoker quits 8-10 times before it sticks; you just need to find what works for you- gum, patches, drugs, cold turkey. You'll find it when you are ready to quit. Good luck.

I used nothing, i went cold turkey (as such) becuse i found out i was pregnant. set a goal and reward, say if you go a month then you can buy yourself that watch etc you wanted, then the next goal and reward and so on. if there is something at the end of it, you may just succeed!!

I have quit twice, started smoking when I was 12, smoked for 7-8 years, which isnt long compare to some. Tryed everything I could, but the only way that ever allowed me to quit longer than a year was willpower.. if you dont have that then its going to be immpossible. I found that using the patch and all that junk made my cravings worse because they still feed nicotine into your body and once you go off you crave MORE. I tryed to quite those ways and ended up going from 3/4 pck/day to 2 pcks/day. Those things are used to quite the habit not the cravings. My first attempt cold turkey I was quit for 11/2 years and this time round will be 1 year next mnth, I plan to STAY quite this time!!

I stopped smoking when my three year old walk out the front door when I was smoking in the back doorway. Someone picked her up and call the police and she told them were she lived. When they came to my door I told them all my kids were in the bed. They left and I went up stairs to check the kids and the baby was gone. I called the police back and told them what happen and from that day on I stopped. I know from that day on my kids come first. My daughter had an angel watching over her then and today at 20 years old she is a blessing to all who know me her.

Honestly, the only way I was able to quit was when I got pregnant. I didnt find out I was pregnant until I was almost 12 weeks. But I was feeling REALLY nauseous before that, and everytime I tried to take a drag I would gag and retch. Thats what tipped me off I could be pregnant, haha. Morning sickness made it REALLY easy to quit!

I did Wellbutrin, I've heard that new Chantix stuff is good. I had done it before but did not quit. I think the key is that you have to mentally ready to say "that's it!" and give up the habit. The nicotine you can live without, the habit I think is harder to break. I started taking the Wellbutrin and then picked a quit day about a month later. On that day, I quit smoking. I have not had one since. But, I was SO ready to quit. I hated the smell of it, I hated the way it made me feel, I hated the habit...I was just done. You can do it, but I think you just have to mentally prepare yourself to be strong and really be finished. Do you want your son to remember you as a smoker?

Good luck! You can do it!
