My daughter is five weeks and started to only stay asleep in my arms, which are about to fall off. Doctor says to just let her cry til she puts herself to sleep and gets used to that. It's hard for me to do this but is this the only way to teach her?

Thanks Chaya, it turns out she only cries for about two or three minutes then falls asleep just fine. I think she sleeps better and longer too from all the energy she put into crying. My arms and back already feel better. And I can sleep more too and can be there for her when she really needs me.

Let her cry it out, unless she's in pain or something equally negative. She will learn to fall asleep if you simply put her down.
As she gets older, you may wish to give her relaxation apps or cd's if this continues.

I read that babies only start learning to self-soothe (be able to put themselves to sleep) at 12-16 weeks. That said, you can't hold her all the time. If it helps at all, she'll get worse until she's 6 weeks, then everything will start to get better. Hang in there!
