Finally!!! We have reached the 6 month mark and my exclusively breast fed baby is keen to try some real food. As far as cereals and fruit/veggie pruees (sp) gos we are all set.

But what about safe finger foods that don't pose a choaking risk?? Teething rusks, Milk Arrowroot Biscuits, Carrot sticks.... What to try??? What is safe???

He has no teeth, yet - thank goodness.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreiacted.

Thanks

Quoting Chantelle:

You should try this little gadget I have: it's called a "Fresh Food Feeder" or"Teething Feeder".

We actually have two of these, one for at home and another in the baby bag for when we are out and about. I to, think they are great!! and so does the little one. :)

Quoting Pam:

I loved tofu. Soak it in whatever the child likes (mine liked apple juice or soy sauce), cut it in cubes so they can pick it up. It's also wonderfully squooshy, so expect them to play with it. Chick peas/garbanzos/ceci are also just the right size for little fingers, can be "chewed" w/o teeth, and are too small to choke on. I also tried round sprouts, but my daughter gave me such a withering look before she spit them out!

my daughter loved tofu as well, I soaked it in low sodium beef broth, then I sautee'd it with onion, and she ate it right up!

You should try this little gadget I have: it's called a "Fresh Food Feeder" or"Teething Feeder". It is basically a mesh feeder with a handle that baby can hold on it. It allows you to try virtually anything with your baby. It allows you to give your baby fresh foods while reducing the risk of choking. It is WONDERFUL! Great for any food (ideas on the packaging include frozen melon, berries, bananas, even carrots!, chicken etc.) The mesh is so fine that your baby should be safe, as only tiny pieces will go through (or they can suck out the juice). I think it's a great way to introduce new tastes to your little one while eliminating choking hazards! Good luck!

Google baby led weaning. We did finger foods from the start. Anything goes, but no raw veggies, nuts, honey, egg whites or milk. We did soft fruits, steamed veggies, tofu, scrambled egg yolks, crackers, toast, pasta, dry cereals, cheese, yogurt, rice cakes, frozen waffles, sugar free jello, freeze dried fruits and veggies, pretzels, the list goes on. They don't need to have teeth, read some of the stories. We started at six mo at every family meal time, its a good time to start cups with water too. Let the baby pick what and how much they eat and then nurse on demand still. The babies replace nursing with meals on their own when they are ready. For us it happened around 8mo and eating has never been a stressful experience, cause my daughter is in control. She is 16mo now and eats all solid meals and snacks with cups of whole milk. So easy! And you don't have to wean onto whole milk until you both are ready, but don't have to introduce bottles, straight to cups. Woo-hoo! We didn't even use sippys! Good luck, have fun!

Heinz make some fantastic healthy rice cakes - they are all natural, and you can get them in plain or apple (those are the two my sister liked, as my son isn't quite old enough to have them yet)

Hi - my baby had her first tooth on 4 months witch made fingerfoods very hard but I gave het the Purity teething cookies and they melted in her mouth - for a sweet snack you can give Cheese curls - and you can even give a banana because when they suck it it is basically the juice they are getting.

Toast, baby corn, bikkies - basically anything that will break down quite easily or wont break down at all but is too big to fit the whole thing in their mouth :)

the gerber teething cookies are ok just watch when they get to the bottom it could be a choke hasard depending on the child but the first half of those are safe...... my daughter also liked the fluffy cheetos...
