First loose tooth

I'm glad he didn't freak out to much. My daughter who was 6 1/2 when she lost her first tooth, was freaking out when she wasn't losing any like her friends and then when it got really loose she freaked out even more. Then her daddy told her not to touch it r it will bleed well she left it alone but then her other tooth was coming in behind it and after some time i finally had to tell her she would get something that she really wanted to if she would get it out and she got it out in one day. I swear she would have kept it there forever. She has lost her #2 tooth and she didn't freak out which was good she was excite and it only took a week instead of several weeks. I'm just so glad it came out and he didn't care. BTW we dont' do toothfairies either and she thinks it's cool to see her baby teeth she looks at them every now and then.

Hi Heidi, glad that your little guy didn't freak out and handled it like a pro! FYI, the toothmouse is similar to the tooth fairy ......only it's a mouse which is A more believable as they will build their nests with anything and B fairies are just not cool when you're a boy!!

Well he lost his tooth today....he just handed it to me and said Here mom....like it was nothing...great it was not anything like I thought it would be.

My daughter is eight years old now, but she lost her first tooth when she was five. She has lost a total of eight teeth. She has an extra tooth, also called a supernumerary tooth or a mesiodens, in her upper gums. She recently got braces on her upper teeth and will have to have oral surgery in the near future. The extra tooth will have to be extracted, while she also has to have three baby teeth pulled. They will then bond a chain from her permanent tooth that is directly above the extra tooth to a permanent tooth that is already in place.

My son had just turned 5 when he lost his first tooth, the other to follow only 4 days later. He too horribly freaked out and had a very hard time with this, lots of crying and the fear that he cold not live without it. It was part of his body and it shouldn't be coming out!

My other children did not loose their first tooth until about age 7. After he calmed down, which took almost an hour. We put it in a small jar with a lid an he kept it by his bedside, we wrote the date and a small note on a piece of paper and put that in the jar as well. I told him he could keep it there until his "New Big Boy Teeth" came in and then we could retire it to the keepsake tub.

This worked out very well and when his other tooth came out just a few days later,there were a few tears of sadness but nothing compared to the first time and after a few minutes he was excited to add it to the jar.

I did make sure to tell him that his new teeth were permeant and would never come out as long as he took good care of them. He is 10 now and will sometimes come across that little jar and talk about how scared he felt when he lost them.

my daughter has lost 2 teeth already and she doesn't turn 5 until March. the first one was about 4 months ago, i was told by my dentist that sometimes the later they get teeth as babys the later they fall out,

My daughter just lost her first tooth a couple weeks ago and she's already 7! I was a little freaked out cause i thought it was taking too long for her to lose a tooth. My son started loosing teeth when he was about 5 or 6. When i asked the dentist he told me it was perfectly normal, and in fact he told me that this is a good sign that she will probably be a late developer. I'm so thrilled about that if that's the case. None of us want our children to grow up too fast, right?

My twins lost their first teeth around that age. The dentist says the later they lose their teeth the better for the big ones underneath. We had the toothmouse so maybe why my boys found it exciting rather than scary.



You didn't say if his tooth has come out yet or is still just wiggly. I think with your son, you just need to be honest and to the point. Gently explain to him that lots of his teeth will come out because it means he's becoming a big boy and his body needs bigger teeth. Re-assure him that they will grow back and he won't be toothless for too long. Also say that he will have other teeth to chew with as they don't all come out together.



I know wiggly teeth can hurt so try to get him not to wiggle it too much with his finger or tongue. You could maybe put some teething gel on his gum to help with the slight pain if it worries him. Prepare him for some blood when the tooth does come out and explain that it's also normal and he won't bleed to death. You can give him a little salt water to rinse the taste out of his mouth and disinfect.



You could maybe google pictures of other children with missing teeth to prove to him that it's perfectly normal. Ask him if he's noticed if any of his friends at school have lost teeth yet or if he's the first one to transition into a big boy. Tell him that he can help other kids who might be scared because he knows about it all now. This may help take the focus off him and his fear.



Once his tooth is out it might be quite fun to give it a good rinse and study it under a magnifying glass together. You could show him the root part that used to be under his gum etc. You could also then have a game counting how many days or weeks it takes before he can see the little serations of the new tooth peeping through his gum.



Don't know if any of this helps, but best I can think of without the toothmouse to help ;-)
