Formula allergy or teething?

Ok so I let me start with giving you as many facts as I can, first of all my son is 5 months old, breastfed except for once in the morning and once at night. He has acid reflux although I'm pretty sure he's over it as it really doesn't bother him. 2 days ago I switched him from Enfamil AR to goodstart cultures because he can never get the Enfamil out of hte bottle. He loves the Nestle drinks the whole bottle down like I've never seen before. For the past week or so he has been cranky and irritable (even before I switched) chewing on everything in site, waking up screaming. Today was by far the worst he went through long screaming episodes where I couldn't even console him, he would just be crying and crying, trying to eat my face, chewing on his fist. I have given him Mortin to help with the pain. What I am wondering is could the switch be causing him this discomfort? What does a reaction to formula look like?

Hi Rebecca, I would say it's teething. What my experience has been with my little one is when he was teething he would be particularly bad one day like you are saying the crying out of nowhere inconsolable and everything at night too. Then the next day I would notice the tooth actually cut through. Once it actually cut through the gum he would get better. This happened recently again but really bad and I noticed TWO of his top teeth ( the eye teeth) cut through at the same time, so of course was extra painful. Just give him the Motrin or Tylenol and if it is teething it should get better soon, until the next round that is LOL If you are really concerned though of course see your pedi. Hello,

A reaction to formula would be spitting it back up, diarhhea, or rash.

I think he is teething. You might want to try baby orajel, the night time relief. Tylenol or motrin is good. Try the teething rings and make them very cold too. Also, Hylands brand has teething tablets that dissolve in the mouth and its homepathic medicine. You can find it in the baby isle in the grocery store or Wholefoods. Hang in there, and if nothing works, call you peds doc and have him be seen. Good Luck, Amy

honestly it sounds more like teething, but take him to his pediatrician and check it out to be safe. They should be able to calm your fears. I can not see how the nestle with the cultures could be causing probs since it helps with digestion and also nestle has partially broken down protiens to help make it easier to digest. I think it really is teething since you said he chewing on everything.

In my experience, reaction to formula can cause irritation and discomfort but is usually accompanied by something like vomit, rash around his mouth, bowel change, or even diaper rash and yeast infection.Try feeling around in his mouth.If you feel some teeth capping go to the store and get some Baby Orajel.Buy a toddler tooth brush and place the orajel on the tooth brush.Give to your son and let him put it in his mouth.That way he is getting the gel right where it hurts for him.Much easier and less messy.If this does not work then you might want to consult his physician.Hope this helped.
