Formula and gas pain

Jay, my 7 month old, was up all night with an upset stomach. We are trying to switch him to formula during the day because I'm not pumping enough. Soy formula didn't give him gas, but after two weeks he started throwing it up. Dr. said to stop soy. I don't think he is allergic to dairy because I eat tons and he doesn't have gas with my breast milk. Gentlease is a little better, but he is still fussier than with breast milk. Any ideas?

Thank you so much everyone for your help. It always helps to know what has worked for others. I've tried many of the suggestions, so I'm not sure which one it is, but he is sleeping better and isn't as gassy!

We tried many different formulas for our son who is almost 7 months old. He was diagnosed with reflux early on. There has been no improvement with any formula that we have tried. Gas and fussiness is the pits. i started putting some Mylicon in his bottle with two or three feedings, it really helps with the gas. It's also safe to use up to 12 times a day so you don't really have to worry about overdoing it.

Would you like some tips on increasing your milk supply so that you can continue to feed breastmilk? The La Leche League website has numbers for free telephone support and meetings in your area and also a lot of information about pumping and breastfeeding. Maybe you can build up your supply by pumping over the weekend and in the evening when you are home and continue with breastmilk a little bit longer until his digestive system is more mature? Best of luck!

are you giving him iron fortified formula?? if so, i found that my youngest was having trouble with it... if you can, try getting something (whatever brand) that is not iron fortified and mixing the bottles 1-1 (1with iron and then 1 without).... also try burping more frequently during the feedings... hopefully his helps

For the pain just try rubbing his little tummy or a little bit of gripe water in the bottle it allows them to pass gas so all that air in his tummy will go away. And too you're sure its gas if his tummy is tought/ or hard and firm.

It may be gas or a colic (its worst than gas it irritates more) The gas pains i dont think its from the formula change around that age they usually have it. but for the formula change try giving him baby food and cereal through they day and just before bed or whenever you usually give him a bottle then try the new formula change i believe he just has to get use to the taste of the new formula if he is refusing it.

And remember not because you eat dairy products and breast feed anyway that doesnt me that he isnt lactose because when he breast feeds its only milk he getting and that has the proper nutrients that he needs even if you eat or not he would still be able to get milk the only thing is he'll get gas because you didnt eat, so be careful.

And remember there is nothing better than breast milk and bonding with your mom so the little guy will be fussie about it.

Then main thing is the clever switch remember bottle in the morning baby food or cereal during the day and just before bed a warm bottle you'll be good to go and then when he gets use to the milk you could give him the bottle whenever he wants. Trust me i know

Gripe water is awesome. Give it to them just before you feed them and it helps to move the gas. Also I have found giving them 2 tsp of apple juice helps them to pass gas. Also give the formula change a few weeks, we did the same thing and it took almost 2 weeks for us to notice a difference.

if you are using similac that never agreed with any of the babies i know, enfimil was always easier on them.if you r using enfimil try good start.and try the regular stuff.my cousins baby couldnt handle much but enfimil gentlease worked the best for her.

make sure you are burping him well, and maybe smaller meals (but more often).

pumping usualy interferes with your supply.and even if it doesnt you dont usualy pump what you can actualy make.your son would get more nursing rather than pumping.have you started solids at all, this may help with some of the feedings.(and just to put it out there both of mine were eating pretty good at 7 mo and even gave them regular milk, although dr.s say alot of cows milk isnt good for there kidneys at this age-but mine are perfectly fine).

I know the feeling. When I was switching my last baby, we had a lot of trouble. We are now on Nutramigen and it is working wonderful. However, it is very expensive. We tried Alimentum which has asame properties, but different brqand and it didn't work. So make sure and try the different brands of soy even

Try ready mixed liquid formula. The powdered forumlas tend to make more gas bubbles when you mixed them. I tried three or four different powdered formulas and even talked to the companies about the amout of bubbles when I mixed the powder with water. I finally discovered that my baby could tolerate the ready mix liquid or ready mixed liquid concentrate. It was a little more expensive, but worth it because he was not miserable. He was a preemie that started out on Neosure which at the time only came in ready mix. It was really expensive so we started trying different powdered milks when he was about 6 months old. We ended up using Similac Advanced Concentrate.

If this hasn't been going on long I'd say it's from the switch. Formula is heavier than breast milk that's why formula babies don't tend to eat as much. Switching from breast milk to formula might make your little ones tummy upset at first until he's used to it. If this has been an ongoing problem with one formula try another I'd say. If you're trying a few different ones at a time that might be the problem as well. =) Good luck and maybe check with your doctor just in case.

Are you trying the same brand each time? If you are you might want to switch to a different brand. Similac really constipated my little girl so I switched to enfamil and then to parents choice. Enfamil and parents choice have the exact same ingredients!

My daughter has had a sensitive stomach, but doesn't have milk allergies (I do not breast feed) We tried sooo many formulas and ended up on nutramigin. It is expensive but some health insurances cover it.Good Luck. If he is crying after throwing up it could be acid-reflux. Ask you Dr.
