I am the mother of a seven year old girl who will not get her school work complete. My husband works in her elementary school and speaks to her teacher on a daily basis. My daughter is a very bright child but is very slow to complete assignments and homework. I have been helping her with homework and after about an hour on the same sheet I tag my husband because it become frustrating to go over the same instructions 20 different ways and she is not putting in the effort or much thought to answering the question correctly. Please help us motivate her to get her work done. Taking activities away is not working.

Instead of you helping her, get her to help you. Ask her to explain what the homework is about, what the questions mean and so on. Homework doesn't come 'out of the blue', it usually links back to something they've done at school, so get her to tell you about it. Play dumb, and get her to explain exactly what needs to be done. I think you'll be surprised.

I didn't do my work when I was younger and it was because I was just board or I had a hard time with it. Maths and stuff I was good at and was sick of dong a million things over and over that I already knew. For the English and spelling I didn't do it because I didn't understand it. Try helping her in other ways to see if she actually know's the stuff or has a hard time with it. If it's a subject that she's having a hard time understanding, maybe you can find a tutor that's willing to help her.

Schools are so competitive these days, I didn't have homework until 4th grade, now from what I hear many get homework in first grade!

You say she is bright. Is she beyond the work she is doing? She may just be bored.

Maybe she is visual learner! I understand more if I see it rather then just have to read it. I don't have any kids in school yet! So I don't know if it will work but if it is math or something maybe use beans or something to show her the math of it! 2+2=4 Put 2 beans out and 2 beans in another spot and have her count them out in to one spot. They might be passed that but that was just an example! Hope I helped!
