My 5 month old is having trouble eating baby food. She keeps spitting or pushing it out with her tongue. Are there any tips or tricks to getting her to eat it easier or is it just persistence that will help her get the hang of it?

She is pushing the food out with her tongue because she still has that reflex. It's an indicator that she's not ready for solids, developmentally-wise. Her digestive system isn't ready either. Personally, I like to wait until my child can feed herself, and then give her well-cooked soft pieces of food that she can pick up and bring to her mouth herself. The pureed spoon-fed stage is completely unecessary.

While the tongue thrust or 'extrusion reflex' is present, if a baby's lips are touched her tongue automatically moves forward. Tongue thrust aids feeding from the breast or bottle but not solid foods. This reflex generally fades by around 3 or 4 months of age but for some babies it will remain active for longer. While this reflex is still active, if solid foods are offered it appears like your baby is pushing the food out of her mouth with her tongue. This reflex is often mistaken as dislike of food. Although this is not the case, a tongue thrust is a sign that your baby is not ready to eat solid foods.

its not at all that she is not ready! babies go thru this stage my daughters dietition said they all do it about 4-5 months old. mine is 12 months and still swallows next to nothing she spits it all. she is an unusual case tho, so basically its just persistance as someone said mix apple or apple sauce with the food works wonders. dont worry it gets easier, make sure you give her a spoon as well and put some food on it for her as she may just want to do it herself

She still has the tongue-thrust reflex. It is a survival mechanism babies have so that food doesn't get into their systems before they are ready. Wait a few weeks and try again to see if it has ceased.

Try making a game for her ,like an airplane or train.I used these on my two some 30+ yrs ago and it worked.

Sounds like she's not ready for solids yet. I'd leave it another few weeks and try again.

Hello,
I have 91/2 month old twins and my daughter would do the same thing until she was about 7 months old as she just did not care to eat it.. eventually she got the hang of it and Yes persistence.. some babies are not ready... Now they dont stop eating.. but my first son who is now 4 starting eating at 4 months and did amazing... so it could go either way just keep doing what your doing and I amsure in the end it will be rewarded!!!!'

have you tried mixing the food with peaches pears or applesauce. It may sound gross, but it worked wih all my children
