getting labor started?

Alright, I know most of you thought the same thing, how can I get this labor started(safely), and now I want your input. I have looked on line to see if there are any other ways then what I have been told, and I didn't find any. I have 2 weeks left of my pregnancy, it is my second, and I am misserable! I have tried the cleaning like crazy, bending, squating, sitting and stretching(and nothing). I have tried the spicy foods, and even sex, and nothing is working at all. I know they say that the baby will come when it is ready, but any ways to help speed it up just a bit would be appreciated.

Just FYI, there is absolutely no evidence that indicates that walking augments or starts labor! All walking or other rigorous activity does is make you tired at a time when you need to be most rested. Relaxation, imagery, hydration and nutrition should be ever woman's focus prior to her birth.

Sex does two things, it irritates the cervix, which causes prostaglandins to be released, which softens the cervix allowing for effacement and dilation. Orgasm causes uteral contractions, as does nipple stimulation. These contractions can also assist with effacement and dilation, as both are the fundus of the uterus thickening with muscle contracture and the cervix thinning (your cervix is part of your uterus!). Lastly, intimacy creates wonderful oxytocin, the Looooovvvvve hormone. Oxytocin increases uterine activity, as well as creating a euphoric mood (if done right!). And just to be clear, while semen has prostaglandins in it, it is a very, very, very minute amount. For semen to have any effect on the cervix, you would have to have sex every 1-2 hours for 24 hours. Orgasm and snuggling does much more to ready the body.

Then, if the baby is ready, if the mother is ready....she will be in a good mood, be relaxed, be rested, hydrated and well fed for her labor. Sex, walking and whatever else does not induce a pregnancy that is not ready to end. It may feel good to be proactive, but there is nothing, not a single action, that will make the baby come before it is ready unless aborted or surgically removed. Even hospital inductions with all those fancy meds fail when baby is far from ready.

Enjoy your pregnancy, it is the one and only time you and this baby are one. You will never experience these moments again....ever.

I had my membranes stripped several times and still went 14 days overdue, and had to be induced. Plus, I got a really bad uterine infection after that (probably due to the membranes being stripped and being in and out of the hospital so many times). I've heard that all castor oil does is give you gas cramps and diarrhea, and can actually cause pre-term labor that can be so hard it can hurt the baby. I'd just see about waiting it out, since you've tried pretty much everything else that isn't dangerous. I'd rather be overdue with mine (I'm due in September) than try something that could possibly hurt me or the baby.

Raspberry tea. I know a few people that tried and it worked for them. One of them it brought the labour on fast though, so be careful.

castor oil, can be very bad. it could cause labour to come on hard and fast. I asked my dr about it with my 3rd and she got pretty mad at me and said she was sick of people asking about it. :( The baby doesnt really come when it wants to, the uterus sends hormones to the brian!!!! LOL I would say to just relax and try to injoy the peace and quite!!!!!!

Actually, the baby initiates active labor by sending a chemical to the mother's brain indicating that the fetus is mature enough to be born...in simple terms, the baby tells the mother's body when it is ready.

This sets off a cocktail of hormones in the mother's system that initiates active labor contractions.  This is why women can be 5-8cm dilated and still not in active labor!  The body is ready but the baby isn't.

So yes, the baby does come when it is ready, but it is an intricate dance between mother and baby that brings about the birth of the baby.  The baby says go, the mother's body says okay and a both actively participate in the baby's birth.

Amazing isn't it!

I do NOT recommend you take castor oil, most of the time it doesn't work and it really just makes you miserable. I tried it with both of mine, and it did nothing but keep me up all night throwing up among other things. There really isnt any good ways to kick start labor , that works for everyone. I walked ALOT for the last 3 weeks and I didnt go into labor til the night of my due date. Just stay really active , but dont over-do it! Good luck!

The doctor told me sex...LOTS of it. I know you don't feel like it. But dont forget the most important part you have to walk right after. At least that is what the dr said.

The 3rd baby was 1 1/2 week early with this method.

But really I think everyone was right...Relax as much as you can, and enjoy these last few days...

Mum told me to look out for the stalk, when it lands on the roof, its ready :) seriously, Im small build too, but babies come when they are ready, but the more you stress the longer it will take and hold things, put on some nice music, ..relax ...and go with the flow.. the rest will come naturally :) All the best

the only thing i can suggest is mnore cleaning!! i just recently posted this to someone else's question about bringing on labour but this is what i did and i had mine just on 39 weeks, born same size as i was. theres no harm in your baby bring born a little early for a c section like with me they booked my mum in 2 weeks early (i assume this is the norm) to make sure she didnt go into labour naturally so I was born 2 weeks early and i was born at the same weight as my daughter. dont use the castor oil though if you were considering that! it doesnt work it just makes you very ill. with my next i think im going to try the cleaning as im so glad i went into labour early i dont want to risk having a baby any bigger then 6 pounds lol

Is there a medical reason you "need" to force your baby to come before he/she is ready?

Any type of induction, non medical or medical, herbs, oils or medication, any type of induction is forcing the baby to come before he/she is ready and is inherently risky.

The risks of any form of induction are prematurity, respiratory distress syndrome, prolonged labor, maternal exhaustion, infection, fetal distress, augmentation, surgical birth, hospitalization, postpartum infection, postpartum hemorrhage. Depending on the item used, there are physical risks to both mother and baby that should be considered to be fully informed.

With that said, if you truly feel or need to force your baby to come early, sex, orgasm, nipple stimulation, hydration, relaxation and membrane sweeping (done by your medical care provider) are generally the safest and most productive ways to increase oxytocin and prostaglandin production and get the cervix to mature and uterus to contract.

Aside from releasing your membranes (which should never, ever, ever be done artificially without a birth attendant present) there is no sure way to create an environment that forces birth, except for surgically removing the baby.

Induction methods of any kind increase your risk of surgical birth 1/4 to 1/2, even "natural" methods.

In most cases, induction is considered either because the mother is being pressured to comply with a date and time (such as "you have to have your baby by ABC) or because she is tired of being pregnant.

In the first instance, normal pregnancy length is 38-42 weeks, which is actually 38-43 weeks LMP the way your provider has calculated it, so there is plenty of time and you can refuse any and all suggested interventions including medical induction, however it is up to you to be informed and make the best choice for you and your baby. "Big baby" is often a reason for induction, however post 38-39 weeks your baby is as big as your baby is going to be at birth with 8ounces. So if your doctor suspects a 9lb baby at 38 weeks, then you will have a 9lb baby at 40 weeks and a 9lb baby at 42 weeks, give or take 8ounces. Of course ultrasound estimations of weight are incorrect by a pound! So that estimated baby could only be 8lbs.

The second reason is usually on the heals of discomfort related to early labor. Most women who feel like they can't be pregnant any more are between 38 and 40 weeks and in general will naturally go into labor within the next 10-14 days.

So, I wonder, can you wait 2 more weeks to allow for your baby to choose when he/she is ready?

However, if there is a medical reason for you to be induced and you are trying to provide a more gentle environment by self inducing I would caution that even "natural" methods of induction carry a risk and if you are your baby's health is in question a hospital induction is the safest method. You can absolutely have a gentle mother/baby friendly induction in the hospital IF you are informed and advocate for yourself and IF your provider is supportive of your needs and wants. Those are two if's that are completely up to you.

Good luck!!!!

I had my membranes stripped 3 times nothing happened I was 3cm dialated to begin and nothing I had no idea that this could cause infection it makes total sense just didnt think about it. I agree it is so hard to wait of course you want to meet your perfect baby, but they choose when they come like Emily said enjoy it and get lots of rest.

Good luck

My best advice to you is to try really hard to enjoy whats left of the pregnancy. I know that sounds hard, but it could be your last time being pregnant ever. You never know. I promise you that you WILL miss it eventually! You might never get to feel a baby moving around inside of you again. And I know you probably arent getting much sleep, but its a hell of a lot more sleep then you'll be getting in a few weeks! haha. So enjoy your free time and sleep while you still can. It'll make the rest of your pregnancy go by a lot faster.

I agree with Emily's previous post. Stripping your membranes is not a "cure all" as the chance of developing a uterine infection is increased, which could make your labor extremely difficult, even with an epidural, and may harm the baby. Be open with your OB doc and discuss all the options, and remember... ultimately, the doctor works for YOU

Thanks to all who responded. I know that the baby will come when she is ready, and I'm not stressed about it or anything, just wandering what some of you thought and had good luck with. Thanks again. Hopefully it wont be that long, and I wont be that misserable for long. I am not a very happy pregnant person is all. I don't enjoy it so much, and am just misserable most of the time because I am a smaller person, and the baby has taken up all the room she can and made it hard for me to ever get comfortable. Again, thank you for the input.

I took some castor oil to get labor started with my third. I was to my due date though. It may be that your body just isn't ready to let that precious baby out yet, unfortunately for you. I did the spicy food with my second, and I was induced with my first (he was 3 1/2 weeks early!) I also talked to my chiropractor about an alignment that is meant to induce labor, he agreed to try if I had not had the baby by 39 weeks, but I chose to wait it out. Two more weeks really isn't all that long when you think about the next 20 years that the child will be living with you. :) good luck and god bless

What really worked for me is to do it all in 1 day...

Take over the counter Caster Oil... You can look it up on the internet. Some nurse told me that was what she used... I only took a very small amt so I didn't explode or damage anything..

Eat a spicy meal at the location you will go walk. (Taco Bell works-Chili Cheese Burritos)

Go walk for 20-30 min...

Sounds crazy, but stimulate your nipples and have an orgasm with the husb... of course!

Shouldn't be long and you got contractions!

Good luck!

Castor Oil actually does work if you can choke it down...it looks just like veggie oil. I understand being uncomfortable, however consider that your baby is like a turkey...not quite done yet! Oh yeah...and good sex...you know that kind when you have a really good orgasium...and frequently...is probably your best bet. Plus if you force it before due time, typically your labor will be harder because the baby is not ready.

I got mad at my husband and bathed the dog when I stilll had two weeks left on my pregnancy and that worked for me.

I know that you have had lots of responces, but here is my two cents. The only real control you have is in taking care of yourself, and the only act you can do to help progress of bring on labour really is sex. Time to enjoy some quality time with your hubby. the end is miserable, but you will make it just fine!

Stripping your membranes doesnt ALWAYS work, and could cause infection. I also want to add that due dates are only an estimate. You could very well be only 36 weeks along.

Ask your OB/GYN to "strip" your membranes. It WILL get things started within 24-48 hours. I don't know how it works, it doesn't hurt (but feels strange), and it was a true relief after being two weeks overdue.

Debra,

That baby's going to come when it's ready not you!!! And as long as your getting worked up about it and not relaxing your just prolonging it so relax and enjoy this time b/c all to soon you will not have time to relax and you will be asking your self what was I thinking??? Just enjoy these last couple of weeks relaxing and getting prepared for the new one...

I did everything with both of mine too, everything that you said above, and was miserable as well. You could see if you could get your membranes stripped but most OB's/Midwives won't do that until your are at least 38 weeks because of the liability issue (if you deliver earlier than that and there are complications) I know how frustrating it is to hear it, but the truth is...until the baby is ready, whatever you do isn't going to help or matter...he/she will come out when they are ready. I had pre-term labor with my second brought on by influenza and was at 35 weeks I was miserable and they told me if I kept going they were going to have to stop it since I was not at the 38 wk. mark. I cried! Hopefully that little one will come out for you sooner than later. Good Luck!

If you have 2 weeks left, you are NOT ready to go into labor. Your baby is still cooking in there. Seriously, you could have a long time to go. I didnt have my first until I was 43 weeks and 3 days. No amount of natural induction techniques will work if your baby isnt ready to come out.
