I keep reading posts about how other moms feel...but I want to SPECIFICALLY ask those that have kids in school and an infant (under 6m) in the house since very small children are more at risk of serious complications. What are you doing?

Hi, I am a grandmother, I've been reading these posts and I'm so relieved to find there are quite a number of inquisitive mums around. I too am inquisitive and consider this to be an essential part of motherhood. It's no good just looking in magazines and newspapers for titbits of information - you have to dig and delve and look in places others are afraid to look and you have to be brave enough to pass on what you find to other mothers even risk being called eccentric or bonkers. So this is why I'm sending you the names of these informative websites you can find on Google search : Dr. Mercola, - Shirley's Wellness Cafe, - The Curzone, - David Icke.com. - Natural News.

Playing Devil's Advocate, I frequently hear women mention they don't want to vaccinate their children due to mercury and its possible cause of autism. However, here's an article which suggests autism might be traced to pitocin and epidurals. How many women would give up their epidurals as readily as they do their vaccines? (I'll now hide under my desk as I expect to be blasted for mentioning this...)

The sources cited in that article are from 2000 and 2001...got any, more updated research to support this theory?  A  lot can change in 8-9 years...

My daughter is 1 and in daycare, she has gotten the seasonal flu vaccine and will be getting the H1N1 when it become available. My mother is a nurse and she told me just this weekend that more children have died in the past month from complication from H1N1 than die over the course of a regular flu season. It should scare you, because it affects children and young adults that are otherwise healthy more significantly than other populations. Spanish influenza did the same thing in 1918-19, attacked young and healthy people...if there's a vaccine available that could save your child, why would you not get it? The vaccine itself is made the exact same way as the regular seasonal flu vaccine, so I don't understand why so many people are concerned about it being a new vaccine...it's not new, not any newer than your season flu vaccine.

I have a child in the 1st grade, and here in the Virgin Islands they are talking about making the vaccination mandatory. I don't feel comfortable because this is a new vaccine. We do not know what the effects short or long term will be. Plus they have rushed the tests, so they do not know what the reactions will be.

Thank you sooooo much for this link. I have never even heard of this before. My son has dealt with problems similar to what you would see in an autistic child since he was young....just not as bad. When I was pregnant....they gave me Pitocin. This is an informative article that helps shed some light on a lot of things. As far as the H1N1 vaccine...I have decided not to give my son this. Scientists first reported a suspected link between GBS (Guillain-Barré syndrome) and vaccinations in 1976, during a national campaign to vaccinate people against a swine flu virus. The investigation found that vaccine recipients had a higher risk for GBS than those who were not vaccinated (about 1 additional case occurred per 100,000 people vaccinated). Given this association, and the fact that the swine flu disease was limited, the vaccination program was stopped. I know people who have this disease. In my opinion, it is not worth giving the vaccine as a precaution though. To add this problem to the list of problems that my son already deals with.....would be horrific for him....and me. I am choosing not to vaccinate when it comes to my son.

I am not getting it! I will not be getting the regular flu vaccine either. My daughter is in kindergarten and she gotten the regular flu vaccine. My son is 3 months old and I am so worried that he will catch something! However, I keep hearing so many bad things about the H1N1 vaccine that I really don't want to expose myself to it if I don't have to. I never get the flu and never get the flu vaccines each year...so far I have been fine. Everyone in our house uses hand sanitizer like crazy. So does daycare where my son goes. I worry most about my daughter being at school. The H1N1 vaccine scares me too much ya know? Plus, its not even available here yet :( and they have closed schools all around me because of suspected outbreaks. Scary stuff but as long as we practice good hygiene I think we will be fine.

What bad things have you heard about the H1N1 vaccine??  I beleive it is made the same way the flu vaccine is made and has been used for years with just a sore arm as the side effect.  It scares me to think of my child sick with the flu and running a risk of cpmplications.  Can you elaborate of the bad things you have heard about the vaccine so I can make a better choice.  Thanks.

I am vaccinating...for the regular flu and H1N1...I have asked many healthcare professionals their opinions on flu vaccinations...to be honest, many healthcare professionals (the majority of whom I asked)...do NOT get the vaccination....BUT, I will be vaccinating as well as getting myself vaccinated because based on the info they have described to me...I have drawn a different conclusion...It is WORTH getting vaccinated, and I would cry for 1 million years if I ever lost one of children due to complications of the flu...+ my pediatrician offers mercury FREE vaccinations(including that other one...the derivitive of mercury sometimes found vaccinations..thyosal??thyosine?? i don't know)....that's just my opinion.

We have never gotten the flu vaccine of any sort and this year will be getting the two H1N1 and the regular flu shot, all of us except the infant as it is not given per my understanding to infants under 6 months. We have a 2 month old and it just sounds too risky not to get everyone the shots. I'm not happy about it, but we have had too many cxases already of the SWINE at our elementary school and the thought of my infant in the hospital scares me more than a flu shot.

I have done the research and for us we will not be getting the vaccine. It is really being rushed through the FDA and no long term research to back it up. I don't want my children used as experiments. We are using common sense and cleanliness. Plus it is a modified live vaccine which means should you get it ,'the vaccine' ,and cough or sneeze, you have the potential for actually spreading the virus to uninfected people. That is why they dont give polio intranasally anymore.

I have a 4 year old in preschool 5 days a week and I have a 4 month old. My baby was a preemie and because of that the Neonatologist and Pediatrician have advised all of us to get flu shots and the H1N1 vaccine. I'm kind of nervous about it, because it is so new, but if her Neonatologist (whom I trust very much) agrees it's the best thing for her, then I will probably vaccinate... But if you're worried about it, don't do it! Just practice good hand washing, don't let anyone who is ill around the baby, and make sure you're older children disinfect themselves after school. (That's what we do...)

Her pediatricians office is not doing H1N1 vaccinations and she always gets the flu vaccine but I am scared someone I work with has been confirmed to have it..It is scary. I am sanitizing and cleaning but what if not everyone uses proecaution and stay home ...

I am not getting my children the H1N1 vaccine. I don't think there has been enough testing on this vaccine and I am pretty sure there is mercury in the vaccine. I allow them to get the normal seasonal flu shot because it has been tested and has proven itself safe. I think this whole thing has been blown completely out of proportion. The normal seasonal flu will kill more people than the H1N1 flu. Unless your child has an underlying health problem, then treat it as you would any other common illness.

I have a 6 yr old first grader, 4 y.o. in preschool and 8 month old. They will all be getting the vaccine. First off the flu shot cannot be given to infants under 6 months old,

I decided to vaccinate after speaking to two differant friends, both are moms, one is a dr. and the other is an EMT. They will both be vaccinating their children, ages 7 and 5. They both spoke of young children that they had recently seen in the hospital with H1N1. All the children were previously healthy, and in one of the cases it looked like the little girl would not live. My little girl has reactive airway disease and if she were to get the flu I dont even want to think of what could happen to her, especially since I am hearing more and more that perfectly healthy kids are getting horribly sick from this. My husband and I will also be getting vaccinated because from the way I understand it if a vaccinated person comes into contact with the flu, they more than likely wont get sick but they will still carry the virus and could possibly get someone sick that has not been vaccinated.

I will say that no one in my home will be getting the nose spray version of the vaccine, it is made of a weakened live form of the virus and you are more likely to have a bad reaction to that.

Terri Young Ward is right.. the vaccines is not made to be given for children less than 6 months old. Also for those of you who are scared of the high mercury.... The single dose vaccines - mostly the nasal form - do not contain this preservative. The only thing is that the child needs to be more than 2 years old, have NO asthma, and be able to inhale before the child can get the nasal form of the vaccine.

I don't want my daughter or myself (being Pregnant) to get the swine flu, and regret not having had the shot. Just to let you know, Infants under 6 months of age do not get vaccinated anyway! Use preventative measures within your household. Wash your hands and kids hands as much as possible, keep toilet cleaned, spray everything such as doorknobs, toilet, rugs, faucets especially after company. I have a 3 yr old and a 1 yr old, I am still very much undecided myself.

I hadn't heard that and I didn't have an epidural because I had to have a C-section (unless a spinal tap can cause it too) but if I was told there was a risk, I'd gladly give it up & endure the pain to try to ensure my child's health.

I have a 4 1/2 month, a 2 1/2 yr, and a 7 and 9 yr old in school, and there's no way I will let them have the H1N1 vaccine. I also agree with Darcy and some of the others. There is not enough known. Back in the 70's when there was an outbreak of the Swine flu they rushed a vaccine then also and it killed hundreds, and cause alot of neurological problems in children. I do fear this Swine flu, but my kids have wipes and hand sanitizer that they use daily, along with hand washing threw out the day. I ask and explain to them how important it is to use these things several times a day!! I say if as the year goes on and it turns to a pandemic take our kids out of schools and protect them that way. Along with a daily prayer for protection upon our children!! Hopefully this helps.

Thank God no one else got it. I will not give the vaccine to my 5 yr old or newborn at 6 months, I feel like it is too new. I will let them get the regular seasonal flu shots.

I have a 5 and 3 yr old plus a 3 month...not getting vaccine...my husbands grandmother has a confirmed vaccine injury from the last swine flu shot many years ago, and is still suffering from the consequences of the vaccine (it damaged her lungs so badly she is on oxygen 24/7)...Thus when needed we are going on errands and to wal mart/target/grocery store before noon (seems to be less moms and kiddos out then) ...if we do come upon someone coughing, we walk the opposite way. And since it can transmit from surfaces we are using a hand cleaner as soon as we get back in the car from any adventure in public...And I don't let my older ones touch our newborn while we are out and not until they've de-germed. And whether or not their clothes look dirty, everything worn while we're out gets washed, because they touch and explore everything while we're out. And I ask God for protection...because no matter all the precautions I take or worry I may do, someone can still get sick, and I believe that God doesn't give us anymore than we can handle, so I just trust that no matter what happens, He will give us the strength to get through it.

According to Kaiser hospital staff this particular strain of H1N1 flu was around 60 yrs ago, so people in their 60s are immune to this strain. To get the H1N1 vaccine is recommend in case this strain comes back in 60 yrs. The unfortunate part is children are the ones bearing the brunt of this strain. This week especially in the bay area...All I can say is stay home and take care of your kids especially if they have additional health problems...my son who is 14 just had the H1N1 flu and had recovered after a week of rest, lots of fluids every hour and staying in contact with my dr. Best of luck to all of the moms.....

The vaccine is not available to children under 10 in Australia at the moment, because the data on testing on children is not available. So no WAY would I get my kids under 10 done. Apparently the data should be available within the next month, but right now, it isn't. In the meantime, no-one should be getting their kids done.

I do not have school aged children, but my 21 mos old daughter is very frequently (@ least once or twice a week) with her school aged cousins. My daughter was a preemie and is at risk for lung problems with any illness. My husband is also a paramedic(who will be getting vaccinated) and has already been transporting a lot of people with flu symptoms. She will most likely be exposed to H1N1 sometime this winter, and I feel my job as a parent is to protect her, and that includes vaccinating her against diseases that could potentially be very harmful even fatal for her. I have done all my research into the vaccine and will still get her vaccinated, for our family the benefits outweigh the risks. As a side note, I too will be getting vaccinated (I'm pregnant).

Everytime I turn on the news, they've screwed up with the vaccine. Id be afraid to give that to my infant, let alone an older child. Ive never had a flu shot of any kind and dont want one for myself either. I average every 8 years or so getting the flu. My children have had it once a piece. I pray everyday that they are spared from coming in contact with this mess. I pump them full of fruits and veggies and make them get proper sleep to keep them strong. Its all we can really do. I have a 3.5 year old in preschool, a 2 year old & I am 7.5 months pregnant. Although, the CDC states that the H1N1 is made the same way as the seasonal, that does not mean it is exactly the same (safety wise). I personally chose not to vaccinate & when it comes available at my children's pediatrician, I will not vaccinate them unless there is signifigantly more information about the shot. I have read the other comments on here about doctors saying that the vaccination is safe. They don't know, they're assuming. My doctor told me that he is not even planning on vaccinating himself or his family because of the lack of information & he has been consulting pathologists in the area for advice. I was also told by my doctor that the injectable comes in 2 forms, one made with high levels of mercury & one without. If you decide to vaccinate your children you might want to ask which one they're using (as mercury is one of the things that people suspect causes Autism). I think sometimes vaccinations can do more harm then good.

So far there are 3 cousins and two of their friends that have caught the H1N1 virus - one of those cousins has been hospitalized. All of these cousins (and their friends) live in completely different cities out there...yet they caught the virus. They're all in their TWENTIES and aren't particularly unhealthy people either. After learning about their illness, I'm getting the H1N1 shot for myself but not for my son. I had gotten the regular flu shot when he was born 9/25/09 but that was before the H1N1 was available. I've had no problems associated with my vaccine and have never had problems in previous years. I might be used to vaccines though since I travel abroad each year. I dunno *shrugging shoulders*
